Broken Until You Chapter One The Girl Who Dreamed of Forever Amelia Hart's POV The alarm on Amelia Hart's bedside table rang at exactly six o'clock. She reached out from beneath her blanket, silenced it, and lay still for another moment, staring at the white ceiling above her. Every morning began the same way. A deep breath. A quiet smile. And a promise to herself. "One step closer." One step closer to graduation. One step closer to becoming a fashion designer. One step closer to building the life she had imagined since she was a little girl. She pushed the blanket aside and walked toward the window. The morning sun painted the rooftops of Westbridge in warm shades of gold. People were already beginning their day. Buses rolled through the streets. Shopkeepers raised their shutters. Children hurried along the sidewalks with oversized backpacks. The city felt alive. Amelia smiled. She loved mornings. Her bedroom reflected the person she was. Simple. Neat. Dream-filled. Sketchbooks were stacked beside her desk, each one filled with hundreds of clothing designs. There were evening gowns inspired by moonlight. Elegant business suits for women who wanted to command a room. Wedding dresses with delicate lace that seemed to float across the pages. She gently picked up her newest sketchbook. Inside the front cover she had written three words. Dream. Create. Inspire. Not because she wanted fame. Not because she wanted wealth. She wanted women to look in the mirror and feel beautiful. To stand taller. To smile with confidence. That dream mattered more than anything. Well... Almost anything. There was another dream she carried quietly inside her heart. Love. Not the loud kind that filled social media. Not the dramatic kind people talked about in gossip. She believed love was gentle. Patient. Safe. She wanted the kind of marriage where two people still reached for each other's hands after decades together. The kind she saw every day in her own home. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. "Amelia?" Her mother's voice drifted through the door. "Breakfast is ready." "I'll be right down." She smiled at her reflection before leaving the room. "Good morning." The smell of fresh pancakes greeted her before she reached the kitchen. Daniel Hart looked up from his coffee. "There she is." Grace Hart laughed. "I told you she'd come down as soon as food was involved." "I heard that," Amelia replied, pretending to sound offended. Daniel placed a hand over his heart. "Your mother has been making false accusations all morning." Grace raised an eyebrow. "Oh?" "You've already stolen two pancakes." "I was making sure they weren't burnt." Grace looked at Amelia. "See what I have to live with?" Amelia burst into laughter. Their mornings were always like this. Playful. Comfortable. Filled with little conversations that made ordinary days feel special. Daniel slid another pancake onto Amelia's plate. "So..." "How's the final project coming?" She brightened immediately. "I think I've finally settled on a theme." "Oh?" "'Bloom.'" Grace smiled. "I like that." Amelia nodded excitedly. "I want every design to remind people that beautiful things can grow after difficult seasons." Daniel exchanged a glance with Grace. Neither of them was surprised. Their daughter had always looked for hope. Even in ordinary things. After breakfast, Daniel insisted on driving her to college. As they pulled onto the main road, Amelia watched the city waking up. "Can I ask you something?" Daniel said. "Of course." "Have you ever thought about dating?" Amelia laughed. "Dad." "What?" "I'm curious." She rested her head lightly against the window. "I've been asked out." "And?" "I said no." "All of them?" She nodded. "I'm not in a hurry." Daniel smiled. "I figured." "I guess..." She searched for the right words. "I've always imagined that when I fall in love..." "...it'll be with someone who makes me feel safe." "Someone who respects me." "Someone who laughs with me." "And maybe..." She smiled shyly. "...he'll become my husband one day." Daniel reached across the center console and squeezed her hand while they waited at a traffic light. "Never settle for less than someone who makes you feel valued." "I won't." Those words settled quietly in her heart. She didn't know they would become one of the most important lessons she would ever remember. A few minutes later, Daniel stopped outside Westbridge Community College. Students filled the entrance, chatting excitedly as they hurried toward their classes. "Have a wonderful day." "I'll try." "No." Daniel smiled. "You'll do more than try." "You always do." Amelia laughed before climbing out of the car. "I love you." "I love you too, sweetheart." She waved as he drove away. The campus was already buzzing with life. "Amelia!" She turned to see Lily Morgan jogging toward her with two iced coffees balanced carefully in her hands. "I bought your favorite." "You really spoil me." "I know." Lily handed her one of the cups. "So..." "Have you finished hiding in your room with your sketchbooks?" "I wasn't hiding." "You disappeared all weekend." "I was designing." "Exactly my point." The two friends laughed as they walked beneath the old oak trees that lined the central courtyard. Lily looked sideways at Amelia. "You know..." "Half the boys on campus have a crush on you." Amelia nearly choked on her coffee. "They do not." "They absolutely do." "I'm serious." Amelia shook her head. "They don't know me." "They'd like to." She smiled politely but changed the subject. "So..." "What are your plans after graduation?" Lily sighed dramatically. "Survive adulthood." Amelia laughed. "I mean it." "I know." Lily bumped her shoulder playfully. "And you?" Amelia looked toward the Fine Arts Building, sunlight glinting off its windows. "I'm going to build something." "What?" "A place where every dress tells a story." "A place where women leave feeling more confident than when they walked in." Lily smiled. "I believe you'll do it." Amelia smiled back. "So do I." For now, Amelia Hart was simply an eighteen-year-old girl with a sketchbook full of dreams, a heart that believed in lasting love, and no idea that life was about to test The bell announcing first period echoed across Westbridge Community College. Students hurried through the hallways, their conversations blending into a cheerful hum that made the campus feel alive. Amelia and Lily slipped into the Fashion Illustration Studio just before Professor Evelyn Carter entered. The classroom was unlike any other on campus. Dress forms stood neatly along one wall. Shelves overflowed with fabric swatches in every imaginable color. Pinned to large display boards were sketches from graduating students—some bold and modern, others elegant and timeless. To Amelia, this room felt less like a classroom and more like home. "Good morning, everyone," Professor Carter greeted, placing a leather portfolio on her desk. "Today, I want you to forget trends." The students exchanged puzzled glances. The professor smiled. "Fashion changes every season. Style lasts much longer. Today, I want you to draw something that represents who you are." A murmur spread through the room. "Not what you think people want to see," she continued. "Draw what your heart wants to create." Amelia lowered her eyes to the blank page in front of her. Who am I? Her pencil hovered over the paper. Then, almost instinctively, it began to move. Soft lines formed the outline of a flowing gown. Not extravagant. Not covered in glitter. Just graceful. Its sleeves resembled flower petals opening toward the morning sun, while delicate embroidery climbed the bodice like vines reaching for light. At the bottom of the page, she wrote a single word. Bloom. When the class ended, Professor Carter quietly stopped beside Amelia's desk. "May I?" Amelia nodded. The professor studied the sketch for several seconds. "This isn't your best drawing." Amelia blinked. "It isn't?" "No." "It's something much more important." She looked up, confused. "It's honest." The professor smiled. "You don't design clothes to impress people." "You design them to make people feel something." Amelia felt warmth spread through her chest. "Never lose that." "I won't." "I hope not." --- Lily Morgan's POV As they left the classroom, Lily looped her arm through Amelia's. "I don't know whether to be jealous or proud." Amelia laughed. "Why?" "Because every professor ends up giving you life advice." "I think she says encouraging things to everyone." Lily raised an eyebrow. "No, Amelia." "She doesn't." The two friends wandered toward the campus café. The lunchtime crowd had already begun to gather. Music drifted softly through the open doors while students chatted over sandwiches and coffee. They found a small table by the window. "So," Lily said, stirring her iced latte, "where do you see yourself in ten years?" Amelia smiled. "Working." "I expected that." "In my own fashion house." "Makes sense." "Designing limited collections." "Of course." Lily leaned forward with a grin. "And personally?" Amelia looked out the window before answering. "I hope..." She smiled to herself. "...I hope I've found someone who makes ordinary days feel extraordinary." Lily rested her chin in her hands. "You really are a romantic." "I don't think that's a bad thing." "It isn't." Lily smiled warmly. "I just hope whoever he is deserves you." Amelia laughed softly. "So do I." --- Amelia Hart's POV That afternoon, Amelia stopped by her favorite fabric shop before heading home. The little store was tucked between a bookstore and an old bakery. The owner, Mrs. Alvarez, greeted her with a smile. "My favorite designer is back." Amelia laughed. "I'm not a designer yet." "Not officially." Mrs. Alvarez led her toward a shelf of newly arrived fabrics. "I've been saving these." Amelia ran her fingertips across a bolt of ivory silk. It was impossibly soft. "It's beautiful." "I knew you'd say that." "You always choose fabrics with your hands before your eyes." Amelia smiled. "They each have their own personality." Mrs. Alvarez chuckled. "And that's why you'll go far." After paying for a few carefully chosen pieces, Amelia stepped back onto the busy street. The late afternoon sun bathed Westbridge in warm amber light. People hurried home from work. Children chased one another through the nearby park. A young couple walked hand in hand, laughing about something only they understood. Amelia smiled without realizing it. She wasn't jealous. She simply hoped that one day she would have that kind of quiet happiness. Not today. Not tomorrow. But someday. For now, she had dreams to chase. Designs to finish. A family waiting for her at home. And a future that still looked wonderfully wide open. She had no way of knowing that life often changes without asking permission. Sometimes... The most ordinary seasons become the memories we treasure most, simply because we never realize they are about to end. ___________
