Chapter 1

I am looking out of the airplane windows and see the world pass by. Just then the flight attendant gets on the intercom and announces that they have just past the American Canadian border. I look around the plane a little dumb founded. I don’t feel any different, leaving my country. Hell, I thought I would feel something more leaving my pack behind. I remember the other night when she finally told her father that she was going to transfer to an American college to study law. “You are not going!” my father shouts. Hi alpha tone is vibrating the entire house. He is standing over me like a gigantic bear. I cross my arms and raise an eyebrow at him. It is probably not my best idea to taunt my father, but I am pissed. “You didn’t have any problems with Tulugaak leaving.” “That’s different,” he paces in front of me. “Working with the Mounties is part of our agreement with the government and its tradition.” He throws his hands up in the air. “It’s not tradition for the next alpha to go. Beta maybe, gamma defiantly. Hell, half of the warriors would have volunteer for that duty, but you let Tulugaak got without one protest.” “You do not understand anything.” She turns from me and stalks back towards the front door before turning back towards me. “I should have never let that intra-web thing be installed here.” I groan, “Internet, and it was not like you had any choice. The antennas have been going up all around the forest.” My father stops and glares at me. “You can’t keep protecting the pack from the modern world. It is coming. That is why I want to go. You heard about the American Tribe that fought the government to protect the forest. That is where our next battles will be to protect our way of life. It will be in the courtrooms.” I tell him. He runs his hand through his hair, “We can just move deeper into the forest.” “There is only so much forest. If we don’t start standing up to protect the forest, there will be nowhere else to run.” He throws his hands up and turns towards me. “I forbid you to go.” I can feel all his alpha power surging through that command. I begin to bow my head in submission to his will and then I stop. I don’t have to submit. I feel my own power bubbling up and pushing me to stand. I stand before my father, my alpha and look directly in his eye. “I am leaving.” He blinks up at me for a couple of second before he bows his head. He then turns and yells for my mother. She comes into the room and looks at the standoff before her. My father turns and tells her, “Talk some sense into your daughter.” He then leaves the room. “Well, I am guessing that went as well as expected.” She states as she watches him leave. “Mother, I didn’t submit to him?” I ask her still confused by the encounter. “Of course, you didn’t, love. You are destined to be an Angkkuq. “ I am looking at her in awe. My grandmother is the current Angkkuq, or wise woman. She travels the entire region guiding and assisting the other packs. This position falls to the woman of my family and I know one day when my grandmother passes my mother will take her position and then I will become the wise woman after my mother. From my lessons I know the current Angkkuq is outside of the pack’s politics and does not submit to any alphas, but I didn’t realize that the alpha cannot make us submit. I know my mother has never truly submitted to my father, but I thought that was a mate thing, now I wonder if it is something more. “Father cannot make me submit?” “Of course not, how can the Angkkuq do what is best for the people if there are always some leaders that can force her to do something else.” I smile. I can do this. I can step beyond our borders and learn to be a lawyer so I can protect my people. “You understand why I need to do this?” I ask her. I want at least one of my parents blessing before I leave. “I don’t know if I agree with your decision, but I know that you believe it is the right path.” She walks up to me and hugs me. I relax into my mother arms and sigh. I know she will not stop me. The next day she drives me the airport. My father stomped outside and gave me a quick hug and handed me a piece of paper with names and numbers listed on it. In case I get into any trouble. He then turned and walked away. At the drop off lane my mother helps me pull out my suitcase and wraps me in a hug. “I love you.” She tells me and pulls away to look me in my eyes. “Promise me one thing, don’t tell anyone that you are the next Angkkuq. The modern packs have stopped believing in us and they would prefer to do you harm then listen to your guidance.” I nod, “I promise.” She smiles and sends me on my way. I am off. I am nervous and scared. I remember back to the teacher at the community college the next town over I attended. She was from a neighboring pack that didn’t hate the modern world as much as my father. We were talking about the latest push to have pipeline through Inuit’s lands and then there was that case in Arizonian and I knew I needed to be able to fight for my people in the courts. I asked her how to become a barrister and/or a solicitor. She laughed at first, then when she saw I was serious she told me I needed to go to an accredited university for an undergrad and then law school. We looked at the undergrad schools that catered to super naturals and only found a couple that had a decent law school. Finally, we decided on an American school. It was located in Georgia. It had a large supernatural presence and there was a law school I could attend as well. I applied through the supernatural council and since I was an alpha’s daughter there was no problem accepting my application and they even gave me a scholarship to pay for it. I told my mother as soon as I heard I was accepted. We both decided it was best to wait and tell my father at the last minute. He reacted the exact way we suspected. But he cannot be surprised. Tulugaak, my brother, agreed with me that we need to modernize and become part of the modern world. We just disagreed on the best course of action. He broke with tradition and when it was our turn to send a representative to the Mounties, he volunteered instead of sending a lower ranked warrior. He told my father he needed to see what was going on in order to lead us better. After much discussion, my father finally agreed. He is now a part of an elite division that hunts fugitives throughout Canada. His partner for lack of a better word is human and knows about him. The plane finally lands in Atlanta, Georgia. I look at the instructions again and find the phone number of the person I am supposed to call when I land. My student counselor who is also my supernatural counselor has arranged for a ride from the airport to the college. I dial the number on my cell phone. “Jay.” “Yes, am Nanurjuk. I was told to call you when I landed?’ “Sounds good. I will pick you up outside of baggage claim in 20 minutes. Do you need help with your bag?” “No, I can handle it.” “Great, see ya then.” I put the phone back into my backpack and follow the crowd to baggage claim. As I am sitting on the tram, I know that I am going to be a lot longer than 20 minutes. This damn thing stops every 5 seconds. Finally, we get to baggage claim, and I exit it and follow the people further into the terminal. I make it to where the bags as moving around the conveyer belt, and I wait.
