chapter 10

Nicolas POV I couldn’t stop thinking about the girl I saw on the plane; she had occupied my mind, and I was no longer thinking about all the files left on my table to sign. Every time I close my eyes, I see her, her tiny body in my arms, her nightmares, and her smell, which haven’t left my nostrils. I picked up my phone and called Long. “Long, find out who the girl from the plane was,” I said and hung up the phone; I didn’t even wait for him to respond. I look at my hand and can still see her nails dug into my arms; as I recall her fear, I smile to myself. “i***t,” I mutter, seeing my bodyguard look at me in confusion. Minutes later, Long gives me a call and says: (Boss, I found out her name is Lana, and she is currently here for the careers trip; she comes from a low-income family, and some students paid her trip fees. They will be staying at one of our hotels on the coastline”, he said all in one go. “Call the hotel and ensure she gets the best treatment,” I ordered Long before I hung up again. It doesn’t take Long to much time before he calls back and says: “I have informed the hotel manager to give her the best room and service, and he also mentioned that no one wanted to be with her in a shared room, so he offered her the second last sky lounge that you usually give to our special guests. Do you want her to stay there, or would you like me to ask her to move down?” Long asks, “Let her stay there,” I say, but I don’t hang the phone up this time. “Brother, are you falling for this girl?” Long asks. Long is my best friend. He and Kaye have always been together with me. And only he and Kaye can ask me questions or talk back to me. “No, don’t talk nonsense,” I tell him coldly. “Hehe, are you sure, coz that’s not what it looks like?” he smirks over the phone. Before he could continue, I hung up the phone. “Lana,” I say her name, and it sounds beautiful on my tongue. I call the hotel manager, Lucas. I also ordered him to make sure not to charge Lana anything during her trip and to make sure she gets all the nutritious meals. When she was in my arms, she was so weak and puny, and I want her to have the best of the best while she is here. I throw her at the back of my mind and tell myself I should not think about it. I picked up the files and went through them, taking my mind off her, and surprisingly, it did work. After 6 hours, I looked at the time, and it was 10 pm. I completely lost track of time. Just as I stop and breathe, she comes back into my mind. “Here we go again,” I mutter as her smell returns. she has captured my focus and mind. I pick up my phone and call Lucas again to ask about her, “how is she?” is all I say. “Boss, Sorry, but we haven’t seen her come out of her room for dinner,” he says, fear is clear in his voice. “Well, what the f**k are you waiting for? Get the chef to make her food and deliver it himself,” I yell back at him. “Very well, boss,” he says and hangs up. I put my head in my palms and kept thinking about her and why she hadn’t left her room the whole day. It’s been over 7 hours since she arrived, yet she hasn’t even gone out to explore. Something doesn’t feel right, I tell myself. After an hour, I get a call from the Lucas again, “Boss, we have served her all types of nutritious food. Would you like anything else?” she asks. I hung up the phone without answering him. I still couldn’t focus on my work as my mind returned to her. I wanted to give her all the comfort in the world. And I wanted to do all this tonight. I couldn’t help but call Long again, “Long, can you arrange for her teacher to give her our main company name and get her to come to our office and offer her a job?” I say. I sound pathetic right now, and I am sure Long will laugh at me. And just like I thought, I heard Long let a loud chuckle over the phone. “I told you,” he said, in a mockery tone. “Shut up, and btw what degrees is she currently doing?” I ask out of curiosity. “she is doing a double degree in arts and architecture. And apparently, she has a talent for both her subjects. The teacher told me how she has always managed to keep up the highest score in the class”, he informs me. I felt proud, unsure why, but I did after hearing that. I wanted to get to know her, and I knew that. “Can we go see her tomorrow?” I ask Long. “We sure can, but from what I heard, she is the outcast in her school; because of her background status, she doesn’t have any friends,” said Long, and as soon as I heard that, I had a sharp ping in my heart. “How could someone hate her for coming from a low-status background?” I ask Long, He doesn’t say anything, but goes into a silent mode. “do you want us to become her friend during her trip here?” Long asks after a long silence. I immediately got happy. I wanted her to be by my side, and of course, I wanted to be her friend- well, her only friend, to be honest. “Yes, can you organize it?” I ask Long, and he replies "yes." “Anyways, bro, she has occupied your head, not mine; I need my sleep, bye,” he says, hanging up.
