CHAPTER 10

The sun filtered through the windows of the coffee shop, casting a warm glow over the polished wooden tables. Vanessa stirred her latte absentmindedly, a small smile playing at her lips as she watched Liam across from her. It had been his idea to meet outside of school today, away from watchful eyes, away from the lingering tension that always seemed to follow them in the hallways. And for once, things felt… easy. Liam adjusted his glasses, looking at her with a mix of amusement and something else—something softer. “You’ve been smiling for five minutes straight,” he pointed out. “It’s kind of suspicious.” Vanessa rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her coffee. “Can’t a woman just enjoy a good latte?” His lips twitched. “You sure it’s the latte?” She gave him a pointed look, but there was no denying it—she was happy. And for the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel guilty about it. Liam leaned forward, his voice quieter now. “So… does this mean you’re finally admitting that you like spending time with me?” Vanessa raised an eyebrow, pretending to think about it. “Mmm, I don’t know… you did almost get me caught in my own classroom the other day.” Liam chuckled, the sound deep and unguarded. “Worth it.” Her heart did that stupid little flip again. She hated how easily he could do that to her. Or maybe she didn’t. She sighed dramatically. “Fine. I guess I like spending time with you.” Liam grinned, looking entirely too pleased with himself. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Vanessa shook her head, unable to hold back her laughter. It was easy with him. Despite the risk, despite the circumstances—right here, right now, she wanted this. And maybe… just maybe, she was ready to stop fighting it. As if reading her thoughts, Liam reached across the table, his fingers brushing against hers. “So,” he murmured, eyes locked onto hers, “what now?” Vanessa looked at their hands—at the way her fingers instinctively curled against his. Then she looked at him, at the warmth in his gaze, the quiet certainty in the way he held himself. And for the first time, she didn’t feel afraid of the answer. She smiled. “Now… we see where this goes.” Liam’s fingers tightened slightly around Vanessa’s, his thumb brushing against her skin in a slow, deliberate motion. There was something so natural about the way their hands fit together, as if they had done this a hundred times before. But they hadn’t. This was new. Uncharted. And yet, it didn’t feel like a mistake. Vanessa exhaled, tilting her head as she studied him. “You do realize this is complicated, right?” Liam smirked. “I’m an engineer. I like solving complicated things.” She rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t stop the way her lips curled into a smile. “I’m serious, Liam. There are… rules.” His gaze never wavered. “I know.” “And consequences.” “I know that too.” Vanessa hesitated, searching his face for any sign of doubt, any flicker of hesitation. There was none. Instead, there was a quiet confidence in the way he looked at her, an unwavering certainty that made something in her chest tighten. She had spent so much time worrying about what could go wrong. But sitting here, his hand warm against hers, the laughter from the café humming in the background—none of it felt wrong. It felt like the most right thing in the world. Liam squeezed her hand gently. “You don’t have to have all the answers right now,” he said softly. “We’ll figure it out. Together.” Vanessa let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Together. The word felt safe. Reassuring. And for once, she let herself believe it. She nodded, her smile turning softer. “Okay.” Liam grinned, leaning in slightly. “Okay?” Vanessa laughed, shaking her head. “Don’t get cocky.” “Too late,” he teased. She rolled her eyes again, but she didn’t let go of his hand. And for now, that was enough. The warmth of Liam’s hand lingered in Vanessa’s palm as they walked out of the café together, the late afternoon sun casting a golden glow over the city streets. She hadn’t let go since they left their table—not consciously, at least—but Liam hadn’t made any move to pull away either. It felt… easy. Normal. As if this was something they had always done. “You keep looking at me like that,” Liam said, amusement lacing his voice, “and I’m going to start thinking you actually like me.” Vanessa scoffed, nudging him playfully with her shoulder. “I’m just trying to figure out how a guy like you—six foot something, built like a Greek statue, ridiculously smart—was single for so long.” Liam chuckled, adjusting his glasses. “Simple. I didn’t get out much.” Vanessa smirked. “Ah, so you were a recluse.” “I prefer the term selectively social.” She laughed, shaking her head. “Well, lucky me. I get to witness the legendary Liam stepping out into the world.” He shot her a sideways glance, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Lucky me.” Vanessa’s heart skipped, caught off guard by the way he said it—so sure, so certain. She looked away, suddenly feeling too warm. How was it that he was the confident one now? As they continued down the sidewalk, a cool breeze rustled through the trees, and Vanessa shivered slightly. Liam noticed. Without hesitation, he pulled off his hoodie and draped it over her shoulders before she could protest. She blinked up at him. “Seriously?” “You’re cold.” His tone was casual, but there was a quiet finality to it, like of course he was going to give her his hoodie. Vanessa tugged it tighter around herself, the fabric soft and carrying the faint scent of him—clean, fresh, a little like coffee and something uniquely Liam. She bit her lip to hide her smile. “You do realize this makes me look tiny, right?” Liam grinned, hands in his pockets. “You are tiny.” Vanessa gasped in mock offense. “Excuse me? I am perfectly average-sized, thank you very much.” Liam tilted his head, pretending to consider. “Mmm… no. You’re still tiny.” She swatted at his arm, but he just chuckled, catching her hand easily in his before she could pull away. Vanessa stilled, staring at their joined hands. Liam rubbed his thumb lightly over her knuckles, not saying anything—just holding her. Her chest tightened in the best way possible. Maybe this was crazy. Maybe it was risky. But as she looked up at Liam, who was gazing at her like she was the only thing that mattered in that moment, she realized something. Some things were worth the risk. And Liam? He was definitely one of them. The walk back to Vanessa’s apartment was filled with easy conversation, playful teasing, and stolen glances that neither of them tried too hard to hide. It felt good. Natural. Like this wasn’t the first time they’d done this. By the time they reached her building, the sun had dipped below the horizon, casting a warm twilight glow over the quiet street. Vanessa stopped at the entrance, turning to Liam with a soft smile. “Well, this is me.” Liam nodded, his hands still tucked into his pockets. “I figured.” She rolled her eyes at his obvious statement but didn’t call him out on it. Instead, she hesitated, shifting slightly as she debated her next words. This was new territory for her. For them. Liam must have sensed it because he tilted his head slightly, watching her with that patient gaze of his. “You don’t have to overthink it, you know,” he murmured. “If you want me to go, I’ll go.” Vanessa huffed a small laugh. “And what if I don’t want you to?” A slow smile spread across Liam’s face. “Then I’ll stay.” The simplicity of his answer made her heart stutter. No pressure. No expectations. Just him, letting her decide what came next. Vanessa exhaled, then took a step closer, closing the small distance between them. “Stay,” she whispered. Liam didn’t hesitate. She led him inside, the sound of their footsteps echoing softly in the quiet hallway as they made their way to her apartment. Once inside, Vanessa flicked on the lamp, casting a soft glow over the cozy space. Liam looked around, taking in the books stacked on the coffee table, the framed photos on the shelf, the blanket draped over the couch. “It suits you,” he said. Vanessa raised an eyebrow. “What does?” He gestured around. “Your place. It feels… warm.” She smiled, something tender settling in her chest. “Thanks.” Liam turned back to her, his expression shifting—still soft, but focused now. On her. Neither of them spoke for a long moment. The silence wasn’t awkward, though. It was charged, filled with something unspoken yet undeniable. Vanessa swallowed, her fingers curling slightly at her sides. “Liam…” He stepped closer. Not invading her space, but there, solid and steady. “Yeah?” Her heart pounded. She wasn’t sure what she was about to say. If she wanted to say anything at all. Instead, she reached for him. And Liam met her halfway. His hands found her waist, warm and sure, while hers slid up to rest against his chest. She could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her palms, strong and reassuring. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then, slowly, carefully, Liam leaned in. Vanessa met him halfway, their lips brushing in a kiss that was both gentle and electric all at once. Liam sighed against her mouth, as if he had been waiting for this—for her—for longer than he cared to admit. And when she deepened the kiss, pulling him closer, he let her. Because whatever this was, whatever they were stepping into— They were in it together. Vanessa wasn’t sure when the air between them had changed, but now, standing in the dim glow of her apartment, wrapped in Liam’s arms, she didn’t care. The kiss was slow, unhurried, yet intensely felt. Liam kissed her like she was something precious—like he wanted to memorize every second of this moment. Vanessa wasn’t used to that. She was used to passion, to urgency, to teasing flirtation. But Liam was different. He kissed her like they had all the time in the world, like he was certain of her, of them. And maybe, just maybe, that’s what made her want this even more. Her hands slid up to his shoulders, feeling the solid strength beneath his shirt. Liam responded by gently pulling her closer, his fingers resting lightly on her lower back. He wasn’t rushing. He wasn’t demanding. He was simply holding her. And it made her heart ache in the best way possible. When they finally broke apart, Vanessa found herself breathless, her forehead resting against his. Liam chuckled softly. “Wow.” She laughed, her fingers still curled against his shirt. “Yeah… wow.” Neither of them moved for a moment. The only sound was the quiet hum of the city outside her window. Finally, Liam pulled back slightly, his eyes searching hers. “Are you okay?” Vanessa’s heart squeezed. God, he was so sweet. She nodded. “More than okay.” A slow, relieved smile spread across his face. “Good.” He made no move to step away, and Vanessa wasn’t about to let him. Instead, she tugged on his shirt lightly. “Stay a little longer?” Liam’s lips twitched. “You sure?” She nodded. He exhaled, then grinned. “Okay.” And just like that, Liam was staying. Not just in her apartment. But maybe… in her life.
