"Excuse me sir, you have a call from your father. Should I connect you"?
Liam put his head down and groaned; he did not want a call from his father at that time. He knew exactly what the purpose of that call was and he was not ready to repeat the conversation.
"Sir? What should I tell Mr Adrian Windsor? He ordered that you should take his calls because he had tried to reach you on your cell phone countless times", he secretary said . She looked distressed. He could understand why.
His father, Adrian Windsor; the owner of the Windsor Corporation was a very stern man. Even though he was not too active any longer in the office, she knew he had the power to fire her for failing in a task as simple as getting him to take his father's calls.
He could not let the poor girl lose her job over his own deed.
"Tell him I will call him back right now", he replied hesitantly.
"Thank you sir. Is there anything else you would need to do''?
"Yes. Tell George I will be leaving here in a few minutes and the destination is zikells Cosmetics, Crescent Boulevard. He should get the car ready".
"Oh-oh! You were supposed to have an appointment with the estate developers today".
"Oh… I absolutely forgot. What time were they supposed to be here"?
"10:30 ? That is in about two hours ".
Liam Windsor let out a sigh of exhaustion; his father was putting a strain on him and he was not happy but he had no choice but to do his father's bidding.
"I can't afford to have that meeting this morning; I would need the whole morning to finish up the uphill task my father gave to me", he ended with a doleful glance at her and said "call them to know if we could reschedule".
"Yes Sir". His secretary replied with a gentle nod before walking out of his office.
Liam leaned back into his chair. He picked up his phone and saw that his father had called him a lot of times. His heart raced with fear over how angry his father would be by now. He wondered what grip his father had on him that even though he was in his late twenties, he still feared his father's disciplinary actions.
He called his father and patiently waited to hear his father's rants and nags about not taking his calls.
"I am sorry dad, I had a lot of work to attend to this morning", Liam said the moment he heard "hello" from the other end.
"Have you gone to Zikells"? His father asked. His voice was at its deepest pitch; a sign that he was angry.
Liam responded almost in a whisper "no Dad".
"You are getting me really pissed. I do not want to take that form. I know, marriage is a personal affair; should be done at your convenience…"
"Exactly my point, dad", Liam cuts in. " I don't even know this lady, father. What if she is a serial killer or has multiple personalities?".
"She is none of sort. She lives a simple life, combining home and work. She is coordinated and would make a good wife for you; as a matter of fact, she is the best person. Did you have anyone else in mind"?
Liam started to say "no…", then he quickly said "Yes " . He remembered this could save him from his father's proposition.
"I know you don't, son. Don't play games with me".
Liam was disappointed. He could see his Bachelorhood disappear before his eyes; his lovely time with other ladies, his clubbings.
"But Dad, why must it be her", Liam asked.
He was becoming increasingly unhappy…
His father cleared his throat.
"I am not being selfish with my request, son. But you need to make that marriage proposal as soon as today".
"Grrrh.." came Look Liam's gentle but frustrated groan.
"I know…I understand… but you have to do it".
"I am not ready to be married, Dad. I have to take my time. This is a forever thing".
His father was hell bent and would not accept No for an answer. He seemed to have an answer to every objection Liam raised.
"My mother and I started quite early too. Don't you see all we have achieved as a united front "?
"It is not the same Dad," Liam bemoaned. "I will lose out on the better part of my awesome bachelorhood and be sunk deep into depression. Could even start having mid-life crises some time in my forties or fifties".
His father laughed mockingly at him.
"The only thing you're going to miss is the reckless partying, the uncontrolled expenditure that my hard earned money is paying for, the controversial relationships you keep having, that always pop up as entertainment news headlines. Liam, there is absolutely nothing to miss about your irresponsible Bachelorhood. You will get married to Lucerne Williams ".
Liam swallowed hard. His right index finger nail was in-between his teeth as he listened to his father diminish what was left of his ego.
"Can I ask you another question, dad?"
"Go ahead", came his father's now coarse response.
"What if I refuse to do this?"
His father hissed heavily and said "then I would sadly have to cut you off from your heritage".
Liam's eyes widened with shock.
"Over this lady? Who is she dad?"
"Don't bother your pretty head about that right now. Just focus on how to win her love and attention".
"How would I work up to a lady I have never even set my eyes on and ask her to be my wife, Dad? What if she turns down my proposal?"
"You're a Billionaire's son, remember"?
"Not every girl would be driven by that…"
"Every girl would, especially one whose brother desperately needs a heart surgery".
"What? Her brother does"?
"Yes. Don't use it immediately as bait. Try being natural with your proposal. You can use it if she refuses".
A different thought was building up in Liam's mind and it gladdened his heart. He smiled at the ideas he just got. He was not ready for marriage and could not put up with a woman, whom he had never seen for once. What if she had unpleasant looks? Large bulgy eyes and swollen feet. Maybe even six toes…
"Don't forget to get a diamond ring", his father said before hanging up the call.
His father's mind was made up on that matter but so was his now. For the first time in his life, he was plotting on how to lie to his father and keep the lie a secret, for eternity.
