Indy was in a bad mood when she left the library at five p.m. She had just spent the rest of her afternoon working on the Chemistry project she had to do with Ares alone. Yes, she had told him that she didn't care if he helped her. Yes, it was probably best to avoid the boy at all cost. But still, it was their project, and they were supposed to be partners in this. She blushed at the thought of that word. Curse her dirty mind.
She walked up the stairs to her dorm room, and just caught a glimmer of Eloy and Jamie walking into Ares' room. She waited at the end of the hallway until she heard the door shut before progressing towards her own room. She didn't feel like having another encounter with those idiots today, so she tried to open the door as quietly as she possibly could.
She was instantly met by a tropical heat wave. Summer is over, my ass, Indy thought as she quickly shoved open the window. She made a mental note to buy a proper fan for the second time that week. Indy grabbed the book she was reading, 'Topics About Which I Know Nothing' by Patrick Ness, and sat down on her window sill. The temperature was better there, and Indy got to enjoy a warm breeze and California's golden hour. However, even her favorite author couldn't ban those stormy, dark eyes from her mind.
Then she heard another window open.
" ... don't care that this is a private meeting, I'm sweating my balls off," Indy heard Eloy's annoyed voice.
Indy's ears perked up at the word 'private'. What could these idiots be whispering about? Girls, probably, Indy thought, and rolled her eyes.
"If your carelessness is what makes us fail our mission, I will kill you," she heard a threatening voice that sent shivers down her spine. She knew who it belonged to.
"Relax, half these rooms are empty, and your feisty little girl next door isn't here, right?" Eloy reasoned.
If only they knew. Indy tried not to make a sound. Her curiosity was getting the better of her and she was in full-on eavesdrop mode.
"No, she said she'd be in the library for the rest of the day," Ares' dark voice sounded. She didn't have to see him to know it was him. Even though he'd only spoken two sentences to her, she wouldn't forget a voice like that. Rich, and dark and deep. He should be recording audio books. Or sing in a grunge band. Or both.
"Do we even know what we're looking for?" a third voice asked. Indy recognized it as Jamie's.
"My guess is that it's some sort of file," Eloy said. "Probably on someone's computer or phone or something."
"Whoever did this, is too smart to have it lying around like that," Jamie argued.
"Maybe it's in a hidden folder," Ares mused.
"Or on a flash drive," Eloy chimed in.
"What if they're planning on destroying it?" Jamie asked.
"Maybe they already have," Ares said. "But this place is our best bet, so we've got to make the most of it. We have one month, so let's not waste our time."
"Copy that, boss," Eloy said.
Indy almost fell out of her window sill, two stories down. Ares was their 'boss'? Here she was thinking Eloy called the shots in their little boy band.
"We'll meet again at the end of the week. In the mean time, keep a low profile," Ares ordered the others. "Colt will be back by then and we'll have a lot to discuss."
"What will you do, Ares?" Jamie asked.
"Maybe you could get on your new friend's good side and ask her number," Eloy said, "and then give it to me."
"She's not my friend," Ares simply stated. For some reason, it annoyed Indy. But he was right. They weren't friends.
"But it wouldn't hurt to have some inside information. She seems to tolerate you most of us four," Jamie reasoned.
"You should definitely make a move on her," Eloy agreed. "Maybe she can unwind you a bit. I bet she's got some tricks up her sleeve."
"I'll do no such thing," Ares said in a tone that finalized their discussion.
"And you'll leave her alone," he added. "We need to keep the attention away from us, and today wasn't a good start at that."
Indy heard the door open.
"So keep to yourselves and we'll see each other tomorrow."
The door closed, making Indy believe Eloy and Jamie had left. She tried not to move or make a sound for another ten minutes, and then she heard the window close, followed by the door. Ares had left as well.
Indy got up from her window seat and sat down behind her desk. She opened her laptop and turned it on. She had some investigating to do.
