Oh, hell no, Indy thought as she looked up from her notebook. She sat in her usual place in the back of the Chemistry classroom when she saw Eloy and Jamie walk in. Eloy's eyes had already found hers and held a glimmer of bad news. He walked straight up to her, so Indy quickly placed her bag on the chair next to hers.
"This seat's taken, sorry," she said, not very apologetically.
Eloy rolled his eyes at her and sat down at the table in front of her. He turned around in his chair.
"At least now you'll have something to look at in this class," he said with his signature smirk.
Indy pretended to gag, though there wasn't much to pretend. Jamie sat down next to Eloy and Indy wondered what had happened to the other two guys. She didn't have to wonder for long, because Ares walked in next and stared her dead in the eyes. An involuntary shiver crept down her spine but she found herself unable to look away. He walked up to her and shoved her bag from the chair before sitting down next to her. He didn't even pick up her bag, he just let it lie on the ground with her books and pencils scattered about.
"You are quickly becoming as annoying as your friends," Indy sighed while picking up her books.
"Hey, what did I ever do to you?" Jamie asked, mocking offence.
She rolled her eyes at him.
"You're still talking to me."
Jamie shook his head in feigned disapproval.
"You're not really a nice person," he stated like it was a fact.
Indy narrowed his eyes at him.
"I never pretended to be."
Indy thought she heard Ares chuckle, but when she turned her head to look at him, he was staring at the school board with a bored look on his face. Before Jamie could reply, Mr. Reid closed the door of the classroom and asked for their attention.
"Good afternoon, students," he greeted them.
"I hope you've all had a good summer. We're starting this year with a project that will count for a third of your final grade. I will hand out the instructions and we'll go through them together. You will perform the project in pairs, so partner up with the person next to you."
Mr. Reid started handing out the project instructions.
"No," Indy groaned. She did not want to partner up with the boy sitting next to her. He'd probably let her do all the work by herself.
Jamie and Eloy turned around in their chairs.
"I'll switch places with you if you want," Jamie said, wiggling his eyebrows.
Eloy smirked at her.
"No!" Indy exclaimed, horrified.
"Is there a problem here?" Mr. Reid asked as he reached their tables.
"No. Not at all, Mr. Reid," Indy quickly said with a sweet smile. She was one of Mr. Reid's favorite students and she intended for it to remain that way.
"Good," he said, satisfied.
"Then I'll write down your names."
He put the paper with the project instructions on her desk.
Indy was doomed. She bent over her desk and started reading the instructions. Ares' chair scraped over the floor and next thing she knew, she felt his thigh brush against hers. She looked at him in shock, and he had a sly, smoldering look on his face that made Indy gulp. He inched his face closer to hers, and she could feel his breath tickle her cheek.
"Wha-what are you doing?" she asked, her throat suddenly very dry.
Of course, Ares didn't answer. Instead, he took the instruction papers from her hands, making sure to graze her trembling fingers in the process, and started reading them, all the while infiltrating her personal space. Indy tried to back her chair a bit further from his, but he nonchalantly placed his arm over the backrest of her chair, keeping her in place and even closer than before. His fresh scent of wild waves meeting a rocky coast was all around her, and it made her feel a bit light-headed. As if she had had one drink too many. He had trapped her, and by the smug look on his face, it had been his intention all along, and he knew he had succeeded. Once again, he moved his face closer to hers, so she quickly turned away from him, staring at her desk. His nose oh so softly brushed against her ear and Indy was thinking things she had never thought before. Not even about Cooper.
"Mess with me again, and I might take you up on your offer," Ares spoke in a low, threatening whisper.
"And that wouldn't end well for you."
He pulled away from her, sitting at his own desk like a good student, acting as if nothing had happened. Indy might have thought she was dreaming, but the cold emptiness he left beside her proved her that she wasn't. She tried to regain her focus, but none of the words that came out of Mr. Reid's mouth made any sense to her. All she could think of was the boy sitting next to her. His touch, his smell, his silence. She hardly even noticed the pouty glares Eloy sent both of them every now and then.
When class was finished, Indy mustered up her courage and turned to Ares.
"I'll be at the library after school, working on this," she told him solemnly.
"You do whatever you want, I don't care. I need a good grade, so you're lucky."
She got up and left the classroom without waiting for a reply she knew she wouldn't get anyway. She needed to get away from him, as fast and as far as possible.
