Indy stared at Ares in disbelief. Did he really? Did he just... speak? She wasn't entirely sure, because Ares had gone back to his eternal state of indifference and stared out the window once again. Still slack-jawed, Indy hesitantly stood up from her chair and went to get another round of coffee for them. While the barista was preparing their order, Indy tried to recompose herself. No distractions, she reminded herself. Not even this interesting one. Besides, he was still a jerk. She could have been at the beach with Coop by now. But then again, Cooper was also a possible distraction, so maybe she was better off here with Ares.
Indy walked back with the drinks, and Ares didn't even spare her a glance when she sat down. Well, things had seemingly returned to normal. Indy sipped her coffee in silence, trying not to look at the boy sitting across the table. It would be lunch time soon, and then she'd be rid of him. He'd no longer form a distraction and Indy could go back to getting good grades and extra credit. But his physique was just so... enthralling. For someone who emanated so much animosity, he was unexpectedly enticing. His long, slender fingers softly drummed on the wooden table, but it wasn't an act of impatience. Most of the time, his jaws were tightly clenched together, but whenever he took a sip of his coffee, the muscles in his face seemed to relax and it made him even more beautiful. He'd release his lips from their usual scowl and it made Indy envy his coffee cup. He didn't speak another word, but him just being was enough of a conversation for her. She was shamelessly looking at him, taking in his sharp features as if she tried to memorize all of them. But every time her eyes found him, she was astonished by the boy in front of her. As if the picture of him she had painted in her mind mere seconds ago did not hold up against the original. And as much as he interested her, she did most definitely not interest him. He must have felt her burning eyes by now, but he carelessly looked out of the window, slightly slouched in his chair. By now, Indy had come to the conclusion that he didn't give a damn about anything. Maybe they weren't so different from each other after all. Who was she kidding?
She finished her drink, and by the looks of it, Ares was done too.
"You ready to go?" she asked him, reluctant to disturb their peaceful whatever this was, but realizing they had to return to school at some point.
Ares got up and started walking towards the exit. Indy rolled her eyes. Why did she even bother talking to him? They walked back to the school in silence and the jealous looks of girls they passed did not get lost on her. There were a million things Indy wanted to ask him, but she bit her tongue. It was not like he was going to answer her questions anyway. They arrived in front of Indy's locker.
"Okay, well, it's almost lunch time," Indy shrugged.
"The cafeteria is that way," she pointed north, "and your first class after is Chemistry in room 204, which is up those stairs, down the end of the hall."
She was just about to say goodbye, when the school bell sounded. Students filled the hallways and made their way to the cafeteria.
"That's my cue," Indy smiled.
"Later!"
She turned around before Ares had the chance to reply--as if he would--and almost bumped into the last person she wanted to see.
"Wow, easy there," Eloy's annoying voice sounded.
"Ugh," Indy rolled her eyes and tried to move past him, but he blocked her way.
"Where are you going, sweetheart? I need a tour as well. Why don't we start with your bedroom?"
Jamie and Colt were next to him, looking amused.
"You do not get to call me that," Indy said, crossing her arms in front of her chest and ignoring his wildly inappropriate request.
Eloy chuckled.
"Tell me who does and maybe I'll stop."
This boy got on her nerves like no one else. But she wouldn't let him win. She nodded at Ares.
"He does."
Ares looked at her furiously. He was either that mad that his cheeks turned a little red, or he was somehow blushing. Indy couldn't tell but she quite enjoyed getting a reaction out of him.
Colt whistled and Jamie tried to hold in his laughter unsuccessfully. Eloy, however, looked less than amused.
"You'd let him call you that?" Eloy asked in disbelief.
"Oh, I'd let him do anything he likes. All he needs to do is ask." She smirked.
"He doesn't speak," Eloy stated drily.
"One of the very few things I like about him."
Indy patted Ares' arm and couldn't help but secretly admire his biceps.
"It's been a pleasure but I have to be somewhere that is not here. Bye now."
She sent Eloy a fake smile and made sure he saw her wink at Ares before walking away. Ares' eyes were swirling up an inferno. He was furious at her. It sent a pleasurable chill down her back.
