Chapter One
The soft hum of the city vibrated in the air as Samantha Hayes stood outside the towering glass building, adjusting her black blazer. Tonight was a high-profile charity gala, filled with the elite, the powerful—the untouchable. She didn’t belong here, not really. But if she wanted to keep her struggling tech startup afloat, she had to rub elbows with those who did. Taking a deep breath, she entered the grand lobby, her heels clicking against the marble floor. Chandeliers sparkled overhead, and the scent of expensive perfume mingled with champagne. The room was filled with billionaires, influencers, and politicians—people who could change the course of her life with a single signature. She scanned the crowd, mentally preparing herself to pitch her company to anyone who would listen. Just as she spotted her target—a wealthy venture capitalist rumored to be looking for new investments—her attention was drawn to an imposing figure across the room. Derek Wolfe. Samantha had heard his name whispered in circles of power. A self-made billionaire, Derek was a man cloaked in mystery, feared as much as he was admired. His reputation for ruthless business tactics was legendary, and he’d built his empire with an iron fist. He was also someone who could crush her dreams with a word, but if she could get on his radar for the right reasons, it could change everything. Their eyes met briefly from across the room. There was something cold and calculating in his gaze, but before she could look away, he was already striding toward her, cutting through the crowd like a predator moving in for the kill. "Ms. Hayes, isn’t it?" His voice was smooth, but it carried an edge, as if every word was a subtle test. Her heart pounded. How did he know her name? "You seem to know me, but I don’t believe we’ve met," she replied, keeping her tone even, refusing to be intimidated. Derek’s lips curved into a half-smile. "I make it my business to know anyone worth knowing in this city." He paused, his eyes never leaving hers. "And I hear your business could be in trouble." Samantha’s stomach tightened. So, he was playing that game. "I’m not here for handouts." "Good. Because I don’t give them." His gaze hardened, and for a brief moment, Samantha felt as if he was dissecting her, weighing her strengths and weaknesses. "But I am curious. What makes you think you can survive in a world where even the sharks drown?" Her fists clenched at her sides, but she refused to show any sign of weakness. "I’ve built everything from the ground up. I don’t need to rely on anyone but myself." "Impressive," Derek said, though his tone made it clear he wasn’t easily impressed. "But let’s be real. You’re standing here tonight because you’re desperate." Samantha was about to shoot back a retort when the lights flickered, and the ground shook slightly beneath them. A moment later, the entire building plunged into darkness. The crowd murmured in confusion. Then, a deafening crash echoed from outside, followed by the unmistakable sound of gunfire. Samantha’s pulse quickened. Panic rippled through the room as people screamed and scrambled for the exits. She tried to move, but before she could make sense of what was happening, a firm grip closed around her arm. "Stay close," Derek ordered, his voice low but commanding. "What the hell is going on?" she demanded, struggling to keep up as he pulled her toward a side door. "An attack. And trust me, it’s not random." His eyes flicked toward the nearest window, where flames illuminated the night sky. "Someone wants me dead." Samantha’s heart raced. She’d walked into a business deal, not a war zone. "Why should I trust you?" Derek paused for a split second, his expression grim. "You don’t have a choice. Unless you want to get caught in the crossfire." Before she could respond, the door burst open, and two masked men stormed in, weapons drawn. Derek moved faster than she could register, knocking one assailant to the ground with a brutal strike. The second man lunged at Samantha, but she ducked just in time, her instincts kicking in. She may not have been trained for combat, but she wasn’t helpless either. The man advanced again, but Derek was there, pulling him off her and throwing him into the wall with a force that left no doubt—this billionaire wasn’t just a businessman. He was dangerous in more ways than one. "Go!" Derek barked, shoving her through the door and into a dimly lit hallway. The sound of footsteps echoed behind them, and Samantha’s mind spun. Who were these people? Why were they after Derek? And why was she, of all people, caught in the middle of this nightmare? Derek led her through a maze of corridors until they emerged in a private garage. A sleek black car sat waiting, its engine already running. "Get in," he ordered. She hesitated for a second, but another burst of gunfire from behind them made her decision for her. She slid into the passenger seat just as Derek floored the gas, the tires screeching as they sped out into the night. Silence hung between them as the city blurred by in a haze of lights and chaos. Samantha’s mind raced, piecing together fragments of the evening, the attack, Derek’s cryptic words. There was no denying it now—Derek Wolfe was more than just a billionaire. He was a man with enemies, powerful ones. And somehow, she was now caught in the middle of a game far more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. "What’s really going on, Derek?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. His jaw tightened as he kept his eyes on the road. "You want the truth? Stick around. But I’ll warn you now, Samantha—you may not like what you find." And in that moment, she knew her life was about to change forever.
