Chapter 5: Far become near
"Mr. Hiromoto forgave me for my rudeness earlier. I'm just... I'm just looking for my son." I looked to my already grownup baby that was already in my arms. "Son, greet the grandfather of the birthday girl, Mr. Takashi Hiromoto."
He slowly looked at me, his eyes were half-close. I combed his hair after I put him down in the ground. He rubbed his eyes like he was trying to awake himself and then he yawned. I chuckled because it really is visible that he is sleepy. Then he looked at Mr. Hiromoto. He then bowed.
"Konbanwa! Ohisashiburi. My name is Frederick John Oasis Hitherway. Or just call me... call me, 'Oasis'." I instantly caught Oasis when he was about to land in the ground due to he is really sleepy and perhaps wanted to sleep now. I carried him in my arms.
I heard Mr. Hiromoto chuckled so I glared at him. He was smiling and I smiled back. "I never thought that you had a son, Ms. Hitherway. You shocked me." Then his forehead creased. Looks like I know what he's going to say next. "But... how come you had a son if you're still single and no husband at all?"
I bowed at him and smiled at him sadly. "I tell you the next time we meet again, Mr. Hiromoto. But first, I have to go home 'cause my son is already sleeping in my arms." We both chuckled. After that I bid goodbye at him.
I drove off safely from my parent's house. I hopped off of my car and carefully carried my son in my arms. The maid opened the door for me and I thanked her as we reached Oasis' bedroom.
I carefully laid him in his bed and gently changed his clothes to his pajama. My son groaned and I just smiled then I covered him with his Superman blanket
I kissed his forehead. "Good night, my angel."
"How's the party, Mina? Did you have fun?"
I turned around, only to find out my mother leaning in the door frame. I smiled and approached her. Then I kissed her in her cheeks. Then I looked at her. "I got a chance to talk with Mr. Hiromoto in her granddaughter's party. He was shocked that he got to know that I already had my Oasis." I chuckled softly and glanced at my sleeping son.
I flinched when Mama tapped my back. I turned at her. "I think you should rest now. It's almost midnight."
I stared at her for a moment. I knew she's going to say something. I could say it through her eyes but she chooses not to speak.
I don't want to ask but I'm bothered. I just nodded as an answer and headed towards my room. As I closed the door of my room, I started undressing myself as I looked at the mirror. I couldn't help sighing as I saw my reflection in the mirror.
Mom's behavior is bothering me. Why won't she tell it? I'm curious.
I took a quick shower then I dried myself. After that, I went to my bed and blanket myself. As I was about to close my eyes, Mr. Stefopolous' face appeared in my mind.
I couldn't help but to gulp at his image appeared in my mind. He's so gorgeous and attractive in the first place.
"I've never met a beautiful woman just like you."
I held on my chest when I felt my heart pounded. I'm a bit confused, feeling like I've already felt this before. But I couldn't remember when it happened. What I know is that when I felt it, a nostalgia cringed in me.
And I have this feeling that I met him somewhere else.
I closed my eyes and drifted off from sleep. I have to earn lots of energy because I know that Oasis will encourage me to go out. I have to indulge my son because this was his first time he had experienced this kind of life.
"Mommy! Mommy! Wake up! Wake up!"
I murmured and closed my eyes tightly. Then I slowly opened my eyes and met Oasis' brighten face. "Good morning, honey!"
The bed screeched when Oasis jumped into my bed and hugged me. "Good morning, Mommy! Grandma said it's time to eat breakfast." He started kissing my cheeks and my nose.
I hugged his fragile, little body and we exchanged position. I smiled. "Have you eat your breakfast? I have a feeling you're waiting for me to wake up before you eat." I tickled his side and he laughed.
"Mommy..." He giggled and laughed.
I carried him in my arms. "Let's go. I'm sure you are hungry."
Oasis kept on kissing my face and I couldn't help but to giggle in our happiness. He used to do this whenever he wants to play with me.
"Nice! You're having a great morning."
I stopped from walking as we reached the dining area. I saw Mama preparing the breakfast. I approached her and kissed her cheek. She smiled at my gesture and to Oasis' gesture. He kissed and hugged his grandma. He really loves his grandma.
I carefully placed Shinichiro in the chair then I help Mama to fix our breakfast. I got four plates, forks and spoons and placed them in the dining table.
I couldn't help laughing seeing Oasis excited to taste and eat Mom's cooked breakfast, pancake, hotdog, bacon, and sunnyside up egg. Being a kid is very enjoyable. Kids are always excited about so many things. Simple things could make them smile and joyful.
"Mina, call your father to go downstairs and have breakfast with us. Tell him breakfast is ready."
My smile slowly disappeared and I slowly turned my head at her. In the corner of my eyes, I saw Oasis looked at me.
Mama has this encouraging smile and nodded her head.
"Mommy, if you want, I can call Grandpa for you? I'll please him." I turned my head to Oasis and shook my head. "I'll manage this, baby. Mommy can do it alone."
I sighed and know I had no chance to complain. I stormed out in the dining area and walked straight to the library.
I couldn't help the sweat appearing in me as I was nearby at the library. I slowly turned the doorknob to open the door of the library and let myself in. I found my father reading old books.
I nervously approached him. My father and I's gap became distant after he knew I was pregnant and after six years had passed. But he and Oasis have gotten close to each other in the opposite of mine. I knew how glad my father seeing his grandson. It's good to know and see that he is loving his grandson. I want that kind of moment instead of our relationship as father and daughter.
"Father, it's time to eat." He slowly glanced up to meet my eyes, leaving the book he was reading. We stared at each other's eyes. Every time I stared at my father's eyes, I saw sadness written in them.
Even now.
"I just have to finish this. Then I'll eat."
I nodded my head, saying nothing more for him. Then I turned my back on him so that I will leave now in this place. I think our space here wasn't fit for each other. I still could feel the gap and the barrier between us. Our father and daughter relationship wasn't good because I knew what is the reason how this happened.
If I could return back the time, I'm gonna do anything not to turn out like this.
But I couldn't wish for that. Because an angel came into my life. And that was Oasis. My son. And my angel.
"I missed you, my daughter."
I stopped from walking upon hearing my father saying those words. Tears rolled down in my cheeks. Then I turned around and found my father one meter away from me. He was standing right now and looking at me.
Tears were glistening in his eyes as he walked towards me.
"Knowing about you being pregnant six years ago, hurt me so much, Skelemina. Your mother and I were hurt. Do you have any idea that your one and only lovable daughter got pregnant after you gave the trust she wants? From my point of view, I was deeply hurt. Indeed hurt. And I'd never felt grief and remorse as I kept on blaming myself. I'd been asking myself, "What had I done to happen this to my daughter?", "Did I neglect something and my daughter didn't obey me?"
I sniffed. "Father..." It was my first time hearing his own perspective towards what happened on the day he knew I'm pregnant. It shocked me. It was.
He summoned his hand. "Just let me finish before you will react and say something, Skelemina. You have to know this. You really have to."
I nodded my head as I wiped my tears.
"You're lucky that my Dad approached you and he volunteered to help you in giving you birth to your child. If your Pops didn't do that, maybe I will forsake you and put you in shame. I was vulnerable at that moment, Mina. I was hurt because you are my daughter who got pregnant at such a young age. How old are you then? 18? 19? God, I couldn't help but facepalm. You're so young! Very young to get pregnant!"
I flinched when he shouted. He also cried. He just let his tears streaming down his face.
"But I ask my father's permission to not help you after at least your child will be a year old. You gave birth to your son a birth in Brazil. And we didn't provide you any help because we want you to think about what had you done. We didn't give you the forgiveness you want. It took three years before I realized and forgave you from your biggest mistake in life. Why did I forgive you then?" He cupped my face. "I'd been following you through my private investigator for almost three years. I saw what was your life like in Brazil. You had no money to earn for you and your child. You became poor and lived in a cheap apartment. You survived in Brazil. You managed to live even it's difficult to live with a son in your apartment. You took different part-time jobs. You made the night as day and day as night. The within in me, conscienced me. Do you still remember the first time I visited you three years ago? I was with your mother. I couldn't help but feel stifling as I saw you smiled at us with so much happiness. I knew that your smile wasn't forced. You really smiled at us. And you introduced us to your already two-year-old son, Oasis.
"When I saw him and he called me 'grandpa', I cried when I hugged you and him. I knew your mother was glad in particular we forgave you. But still, you knew the gap we had. We're too far from each other. The times we had together we weren't the same anymore.
"And I'm very sorry, my daughter." He came to me and hugged me. "I'm sorry if I did that to you. I realized I'm such a cruel father. I'm sorry. I'm very sorry." He cried loudly.
"Father ..." I gripped his shirt and snuggled closer to him. "I'm sorry... I failed you... I failed you as your daughter... You were right. I'm such a disgrace. I really am." I was crying a river. My father comforted me. This feels good to be back with my lovable father.
"Sshh... That was then. You changed. It's been six years. Let's forget that okay? Just remember, you are now back together with my grandson. Let's start again. Let's return the times we had before. Okay?" he whispered in my ear.
I kept on nodding as he said that. I couldn't help the happiness grew in me. I'm happy that we got a chance to talk about the past. I'm thankful he accepted me again for what happened. This is the first time we had this long conversation.
Then all of a sudden, we heard clappings coming from the door of the library. My father and I put some distance after our hug and we both looked to the door. There they were. My mother and my son watching us with a smile on their faces.
"Grandpa and Mommy are in good terms now! Yey!"
Oasis ran towards us then he hugged our thighs. My father and I both laughed and looked at each other. Then we laughed again.
"I'm glad to see both of you laughing."
I smiled at Mama and motioned her to come with us. She approached us and hugged my father's waist. She kissed his lips. "I'm so proud of you, Matheus." Father smiled and kissed Mama on her lips and forehead.
Somebody tugged my shirt and I looked down to glare at Oasis.
"Mommy, let's go out later. Let's go to your favorite restaurant just the two of us, okay?"
I smiled and nodded at him then I winced his hair. Oasis likes it whenever I winced his hair. "Sure thing, boss."
