I get into my mother's car with enthusiasm. I hear her chuckle. Of course she thinks I can't wait to go to the bookstore. While that is true, I am also glad that I can finally get away from all those people. It's tiring to shut everyone out.
I hope the store isn't too busy. I set the navigation. It is half an hour's drive. That means I have at least half an hour of rest.
I rest my head on the headrest. When we arrive at the bookstore, we can't believe our eyes. It's even more beautiful than I expected.
The store has two floors, it looks like a library, there are so many books.
I slowly walk through the store. Fortunately, it is not very busy, and Maddow does her best to keep everyone out.
Cozy reading corners have been created throughout the store. Every now and then, I see my mother taking pictures. That must be for the store. She is always looking for new ideas to attract new people, hoping to get more people to read.
Once we have seen everything downstairs, we walk up the stairs. It looks just as breathtaking there as the ground floor. A book presentation is going on in the back. Curious, we walk towards it. I don't think the author is very well known because there are only a few spectators.
The writer is telling something about the book, I think the characters. But it doesn't really appeal to me.
I continue walking past the cupboards, looking for a book that catches my attention. Once we have passed all the cupboards, we walk back downstairs. Upstairs is not really something that suits us. We walk past all the cupboards downstairs again. This time, I walk slower, carefully scanning the rows of books.
When we have only seen 1/3 of the cabinets, both my mother and I already have a large stack of books in our hands. My mother looks at the time, it's time to go home.
The saleswoman looks at us with wide eyes. I chuckle. It probably doesn't happen very often that customers buy such a large stack of books. My mother pays for the books without batting an eyelid.
"Thank you Mom." I say as we walk back to the car. She smiles.
Once in the car, Maddow releases her grip on my mother's thoughts. On the way home, I try to find a way to tell her about my power. But the right moment never presents itself.
"You're so quiet Maddy, is something wrong?" She asks when we're almost back home.
"Um, well..." I start, but then her phone rings. "Wait a minute honey, it's your dad." She interrupts me.
It sounds serious. And my mother sounds annoyed. She hangs up with a sigh.
"What is going on?" I ask curiously. My mother seems to be unsure whether she should tell. "Nothing special, dear. Your father and I have a meeting with another Alpha tomorrow. But he can't be completely trusted." She answers. "What is it you wanted to tell me?" She asks. “Oh, nothing, it can wait.” I say and stare into space.
When we get home, we have just enough time to change before we have to leave again. My father shakes his head laughing when he sees the large stack of books we bought. But he doesn't say anything; he now knows better than to talk to my mother about it.
Harvey and Aiden are already raring to go. When they heard that I wanted to eat at the all-you-can-eat restaurant, they were very excited. It's their favorite restaurant, and mine too. It is not only tasty, but also the easiest. Since wolves eat quite a lot and, it is not too noticeable.
When we arrive, it is already very busy. I'm focusing on Aiden and Harvey's thoughts this time. That's the easiest, and they only think about all the food.
I chuckle hearing their thoughts. It's filled with all the different desserts.
After we are taken to our table, we walk to the buffet. My mother walks with my brothers to make sure they don't just eat desserts. I load my plate full of different cold dishes. Carpaccio, baguette, salad. My father immediately goes to the grill, where he orders several pieces of meat. I wait for my mother before walking back to our table.
"So, who's coming tomorrow?" I ask nonchalantly when we sit back at the table. My parents exchange a look before my father answers. “Jeffrey Davis.” "Huh? Isn't he from..." I start to say, and before I finish my sentence, my father nods. "He needs help with... a certain situation." My mother says.
Her tone makes it clear that the subject is closed. I shrug my shoulders. Instead of asking further questions, I listen to my mother's thoughts. I know I shouldn't, but I'm too curious.
Unfortunately, it doesn't make me much wiser. Only that the Golden Moon pack is suffering from rogue attacks and that it needs my father's help. My father actually didn't want to help, because they had a conflict last year. But my mother insisted, so that no innocent wolves are killed. And because my father would do anything for her, he agreed.
I just hope his son doesn't come along. Last year he behaved really horrible. He was so arrogant and thought he was much better than the rest. That probably hasn't changed much now. If I remember correctly, he must have had his wolf for quite some time now.
My father starts asking about the bookstore, and I don't think about it anymore. Delighted I start telling him how beautiful it was. After loading our plates a few more times, it's time to go home.
When I get home, I see Harry and a few other friends sitting in the room.
Shit, I completely forgot about him. I quickly tell my parents that I want to get to know Maddow a little bit more and go for a run.
It's not entirely a lie, I would like to get to know Maddow better. But I also want to avoid Harry for a while. And it's nice that it's just the two of us. Without the thoughts of others. Because it's pretty tiring to hear everyone all the time.
I walk to the same place where I shifted this morning. I look around to see if no one can see me and undress.
"Alright Maddow, go ahead." I say once I'm undressed and take a few deep breaths.
I close my eyes and feel Maddow taking control.
In through my nose, out through my mouth, keep breathing. I repeat like a mantra in my head.
The first stab of pain shoots through my body, and I stifle a scream. I try to ignore the creaking of my bones and concentrate on my breathing. The next set of breaking bones causes me to lose my control, and I scream.
"I'm so sorry Maddy." I hear Maddow say. I can't respond because of the pain.
I internally curse my father, he said the second shift would be less painful, but that's not true. It still hurts like hell. If I didn't know any better, I would think I was going to die. But luckily, I know better.
After what seems like an eternity, the pain subsides.
"Please tell me it's going to be easier." I say to Maddow.
“It should be, yes.” She replied. She sounds a little sad.
"Don't worry Maddow, I will deal with it." I reassure her.
And while I'm not looking forward to suffering that kind of pain every time I shift, I mean it. This is only the second time, but I already love being in wolf form. The world looks so different, and my senses are much sharper than in human form. It is awesome.
Maddow runs around the pack grounds. After an hour I think it's been enough and I ask her to go back to where my clothes are.
Fortunately, changing back is painless.
“When do you want to tell your parents?” Maddow asks as I get dressed.
I'm quiet for a moment. "I don't know. I wanted to do it this afternoon, but then that phone call from my father got in the way." I answer.
"I don't want to push you, but I think it would be best if you do it as soon as possible. The sooner she knows, the sooner she can help us." She says as I walk back to the pack house.
"Yeah, I know." I answer. It's not that I don't want to tell. I just don't know how.
I'm still lost in thought when I get home. It's quiet downstairs, and my mother is the only one in the room. I think she was waiting for me.
From a distance, I can hear that she is talking to her wolf. From her face, she knows that something is going on. That is of course, not so strange since she can sense my feelings. I take a deep breath.
"Mom, I have something to tell you." I say before I change my mind.
What could that be? Could she have found her mate by now?
"No Mom, I have I didn't find my mate." I answer her thoughts.
Huh, did I say that out loud?
"No Mom, you didn't say anything..." I hope she understands me without me having to say it out loud. But she looks questioning at me.
"I can hear you." I clarify. Her eyes widen.
I am suddenly overcome with fear. Would she be angry that I overheard her thoughts? Even if I don't do it on purpose. “Holy shit.” That is all she says and thinks.
