Chapter 1: Connie, the Con
Finding another prey, I stopped outside the new built restaurant and glanced at the Baron's libertine brat, who recently caught my interest. His colorful clothes and colorful girls always makes the House of Baron the town's laughingstock. He's surrounded with wealthy friends, as usual. My eyes stopped at one of his friend's, Viscount Elrich's successor's pouch. I smirked.
They really are so rich. They are the people I really wanted to fool. But I wanted to play with the Baron's brat first.
Now...why don't we..?
The opportunity then came to me, knocking. Elmer, the Baron's youngest child, stood up. His servant was so pale when they faced each other.
With special hearing ability, I listened to their conversation. Only to be disappointed to use it.
“Bankruptcy—don't talk nonsense!” the two talked at the corner, that's why when Elmer's voice rose, it attracted attention.
My face distorted. Indeed, it hurt my ears. So loud.
With pale faces, the two then moved to the second floor.
I see. So they're in the verge of bankruptcy, eh? It wouldn't hurt if I steal 'some', right?
Observing the Viscount's successor, Griffin, who invited their other friends to hangout and just left Elmer behind, an idea came. How clever.
Nobles are not stupid. With Elmer's stupidity, they heard his shout and decided to cut him off. He's not wealthy and useful to them anymore.
But as 'Griffin', I won't do that.
Calmly leaning on the shop's wall, I transformed as Griffin. The shopkeeper easily spotted me and smiled at me flatteringly.
“My Lord, do you want me to—”
I raised my hand midway, as if to put airs, and it stopped him from his annoying chatterings.
“I only came back to wait for Lord Alfonse. Find me a sit and don't disturb me.”
Griffin is known to be arrogant and looked down to peasants. Cutting this old and poor shopkeeper off is necessary. Since, his breath also stinks.
While gracefully drinking the tea, a flock of middle-income family-from girls are giggling right in front of my table. One of them has her cheeks as red as chili. She's the daughter of a shop owner nearby.
They flocked and stood in front of me and saluted.
“Greetings, My Lord.” the girl, trying hard to appear noble, and trying hard to impress me, bended her knees as she put her hair behind her ear.
Glancing coldly at the shopkeeper and at the second floor, he nodded and bowed before showing me the way. Just before I could walk, Elmer came down.
Seeing me, Elmer's eyes brightened. I sneered in my mind.
Now, let's start.
***************†****************
At the bustling town of Ervasce, right above the peasants' restaurant is a figure standing right at its roof. Below her is a crowd of peasants, migrants, businessmen, and noblehouses' slaves. All of them are watching the show to unfold.
“Cologne Adams! Come down here, now!”
Connie, who was still sleepy back then, was disturbed by lots of footsteps, thanks to her advanced hearing ability. She ran and climbed on the roof quickly, only to be watched like a monkey doing a show in the circus!
Though her eyes looks like she's still in daze and sleepy, her senses are completely alert. She silently gritted her teeth.
'That bastard knight, Markus..'
She cursed Markus in her heart. She was back then arrested twice, and that was because they caught her off guard. Now that she has never let her guard down, they are struggling to catch her.
Truth is, she is new to this town. And she only got arrested twice. And those twice, she always struggles because she was always asked about her ability and that, would she like to enrol and study at the prestigious Elite Academy.
After those incidents, she vowed to herself that after this one last steal, she will definitely leave this place instantly.
But now, this third time, she had a bad premonition.
“Connie! Aren't you ashamed at all?! You scammed the Baron's son whose family is on the verge of bankruptcy?! Connie, come down here and tell me if you still have conscience!”
Connie got disturbed from her intuition when she heard Markus' words.
The crowd silenced. Connie's brows furrowed.
The proud heroic Markus felt like he got splashed by a cold bucket of water when he heard the crowds' chattering.
“They're still in the verge, they're not yet bankrupted! They can still be saved. This knight is overreacting.”
“They deserve it! They abuse us slaves and pay our wages less than what our wages should be.”
“She's too innocent to look at to be a con artist. Knight, you must have been catching the wrong person.”
“That's right. Look at her, she's still sleepy. She's still young and needs a lot of sleep. You must have disturbed her.”
Markus' face distorted when he heard their comments. What he did was just out of sense of righteousness. But the people still chose the young and good-looking con artist just because of her face.
Connie pursed her lips. If she was stupid, she would probably thank the crowd from defending her. But she knew that they are just using her situation to say their so-called heroic opinions that have been bottled inside of them for a long time.
People are attracted to strong people just like how girls are attracted to strong men. But as what she believes, strong men likes strong women, not girls.
They are big difference between boy and man, girl and woman, just like how big the difference is between humans and humanity. It sounds so similar, but only few could decipher the difference.
And these people, they are looking at her like a shooting star seen once in a hundred years.
She doesn't really understand why people like them thinks so highly of her even though what she did is somewhat vicious. But this is her living. Living is using your abilities to live and do every means to do just to survive. If her disguise ability is not used for spying and stealing, then what could it do more?
“Connie.” voice that made her feet rooted on the roof, she couldn't move.
'Damn it. He's here. Damn him! Damn his ability! Damn you all!!'
