What if she is with Rich?

1077 Words
~Thelma POV~ I look around in a panic, attracting a loud laugh from my crazy best friend. “Why are you even laughing?” I ask her, trying to feign annoyance, but the crazy her continues to laugh out loud to the extent that our mothers, who are at the extreme end of the living room, look in our direction, wondering what is making us laugh so loudly. “There is something that I would like to say…” Recho begins, looking in my direction. That mischief in those beautiful eyes can tell me it is one of those crazy statements of hers. “Go ahead,” I say, less bothered by whatever she is going to say. “You are acting the same way you were acting three years ago on the exact date of my brother's birthday.” I almost choke on nothing when she says that. Oh heaven! What the hell is this? Let her not try and joke around that much. How I wish she knew that that crazy brother of hers has been in-between my legs twice. I just can't imagine what the result would be if she ever came to know about that. I’m sure that would be the end of our great friendship, the end of something good that has transpired between us for so long now. We made it clear that we are not to date our best friend's close siblings. But then I think that is something one-sided since personally, I don't have any siblings. To make matters worse, it is the same me who is still making things turn out complicated. I am slowly beginning to do little sneak-outs with the forbidden fruit. Hope things don't get any worse compared to what they already are. Suddenly, Recho moves away from where she is busy chopping the onions and moves toward me like she has something urgent that has suddenly come into her mind. Of course, that is her all the time. “Perhaps you two are seeing eac—” “What the f**k are you saying?” This time I act in all furious and quickly. Of course, it is just on the outside, but deep inside, I would wish that all this is true. But guess what, it is not, and will remain like that forever… I think. “I knew it." Once again, my best friend is laughing, this time so much louder as she gets to where our mothers are. For sure, with the craziness of hers, I don't know where this is leading us at all. “There is surely something that we are missing,” this time is Recharah who says. I look from her to her daughter and then to mom, who also seems to be amused by the whole scenario despite the fact that the two women don't even know what this is all about. “What is so funny, girls?” this time it is mom who asks. “Nothing, Mrs. Mackenzie. I was only making fun of Thelma. You know how she can be when it comes to men.” “Men? Tell me, is she having someone now? You have no idea how I have been eagerly waiting to hear such good news for a very long period of time,” Mom says, so excited. You will not believe it. I think you are now already used to my mom's obsession with me getting a boyfriend. I can't exactly tell whether she wants grandchildren or is worried that I might be gay. Anyway, it is neither a crime to be gay. “Come on, Mom, how many times have I told you not to interfere with my relationships? I will get a man when I feel ready.” Stop feigning annoyance and tell your family already that you have someone you have loved for three years, but it is only that he is not for you. I feel like slapping my subconscious due to her crazy words. “Not again, girl… Every time we talk about you getting a boyfriend, all you do is become so sour." So how do you want me to tell you that I like your brother so much? I only think about the last words but don't say them out loud. “I only said what if she is with Rich,” Recho mocks, looking in my direction. I know she is not one to easily get away from something, especially when it has to do with me. “Oh, that would be the last relationship in this world. My playboy son is going out with this innocent soul,” Recharah says. For sure, I don't know how long this conversation is going to last, but it is only one thing I can tell: I don't like discussing it with them. I think it would be very great if I keep that discussion within myself. “I think we need to head back to work. The time is going so rapidly, and yet we have to prepare all the rest before the celebration finally kicks off,” I say, just hoping that they can take it, and we are back to doing the work. Successfully, everyone thinks it is right that we get back to work. However, that little mockery discussion keeps playing in my mind all the time while we are doing the dishes. I continue to think overwhelmingly about how I can come up with a good excuse not to attend that birthday, but for sure, I don't come up with any. There is only one thing left to do… that is to attend the party. “By the way, ladies, we need to have everything done quickly so that we can head for shopping. We couldn't do it yesterday because of the wedding anniversary,” Recharah announces. The fact is I like our moments as the four, but when it comes to including the forbidden fruit, things get more worrying for me, particularly since I am sure all the ladies have no idea about what I am battling currently. Plus, I pray they never know anything at all. About two hours later, we are done with having the dishes ready. This means we are now left with only having breakfast and then heading for very brief shopping. I just pray to God that this day indeed comes to an end before I end up bumping into him again.
