Chapter Three

I glanced at myself in the mirror. My right cheek seemed to have turned a purplish blue in color, like a prune picked in a jar for several weeks. I pickled up a shade of light compact powder from the different shades lined up in the drawer and applied on my cheek carefully. Margret had taught me how to hide these marks yesterday because she thought it was important that I understood the techniques of hiding behind a thick layer of makeup since I"ll be using these techniques more times than I could count, considering the way I behaved with Jasper. Appearances were very important. I lied down in the soft cushions of my large canopy bed soon after breakfast with a book in my hand which I mindlessly turned pages of unable to concentrate on even one word because my mind was preoccupied by escape plans one which I knew should be good enough. Staying here for three days had told me that begging wasn"t going to get me anywhere. I needed a person on my side. When I almost dozed off, I heard a knock on my door and I sat upright on my bed like a army man in terror of the drill sergeant. Jasper entered the room, he was all smiles once again followed by a goth chick wearing stark black clothing and piercings marring her face. Her black hair was straight and her green eyes matched her heart shaped face. Margret entered the room, placed a huge trunk on the floor and retreated out like a damn robot functioning only with Jasper"s orders. "Good Morning, Kiara. Rose is here for your haircut." Jasper said. He was dressed to impress in a grey suit with a matching olive green tie. His hair unruly, yet it seemed perfect somehow. He had a strange smile on his face. I tried to act cheerful. "Good Morning." The goth chick offered me a handshake, a friendly smile on her purple lips. "I"m Rosalind, but they call me Rose at work." I shook hands with her. "Nice meeting you Rose, I"m Kiara." "Likewise. Alright, so I"ll just set up all the things I need for your haircut." "Sure." Jasper closed the distance slowly and leaned in to whisper in my ear. "If you tell her anything, even a single word against me from your mouth and I"ll see to it that your beautiful face isn"t beautiful anymore. Are we clear?" I swallowed and nodded my head. He smiled and brushed his fingers through my hair and then facing Rose, he said, "If you can just give her a different look and change her hair color to chestnut brown and some golden highlights. I think that would be lovely." "Whatever you want, Mr. Lockhart." After Jasper explained to Rose about my look, he was out of the room leaving Rose and I alone. She arranged all the supplies she had brought from her trunk and began prepping me for the haircut. An hour and a half when the coloring and hair wash was done, I was seated in the chair for my haircut. I could hear the soft sounds of the snips as I felt the scissors snip through the wavy strands of my hair. "How long have you been a hairstylist for Jasper?" I asked. Now was my time to dig for information. "Two years." One word answers meant she was holding herself back. "So you"ve known him since two years." "I just know him on a professional level. I don"t make it my business dig into the personal lives of my clients." "That"s quite understandable, considering if the client acts like a damn psycho, you would want to keep out of their business." I said. "Excuse me?" The hair-cutting came to a stop. I had her attention. "Aren"t you his girlfriend?" "Do really believe that, Rose?" I turned to face her, and stared into her eyes searching for an answer. "Does it look like I"m happy, sitting here in this chair? Getting my hair shortened and colored even though I don"t like it?" "It"s none of my business." she said cutting me off at once. I lowered my voice. "He is dangerous and you know it." "What do you want me to do?" "Help me get out of this place" I said on the verge of tears. "Please help me." "Do you realize this is going to be very risky? He could hurt you if he knew what you were planning. The gates of this mansion only open with his permission, I cannot help you right now. The last time I let a girl---" she abruptly shut her mouth before anymore words spilled. A chill ran down my body. "Which girl, Rose?" I asked. "What happened? Was there someone else here before me? I need you to tell me." "All you need to know right now, Kiara is that you are living with a f****d up man. And there is no chance that I can get that gate to open." "When you get out of this place, please just get some help." I took out a black eyeliner from her kit and found a small paper in which I scribbled my house address and my mother"s phone number. "Call this number and tell my mother about my situation. My mom will help. Please, this is the only way I can get out of here." There was reluctance in her green eyes was evident. "I can try, I guess." "Thank you." I stood up and wrapped her in a hug. "Thank you so much." I would get out of this place soon. Well, that"s what I thought anyway.
