Chapter One

1973 Words
I had a hard time adjusting to the sunlight streaming through the drapes. I wondered where I was for a minute when the incident from the night before came back to me in quick flashes and I remembered the nice wealthy man who had taken pity on me. How could have I been so stupid to have slept like a horse in his car? Had he brought me to his house? I scanned my surroundings to find a very spacious bedroom with stark white interior, the kind I had only seen on television on that show called cribs where they took a tour of rich people"s mansions. I couldn"t even imagine myself sleeping in a bed like the one I was lying in. It was a canopy bed with lush cushions and soft feather like blanket. I could sleep in this bed for an eternity. I realized that I felt cleaner and my clothes had been changed. Instead of those tattered baggy clothes, I found myself in a pink silk gown. I decided to have a nice warm bath and then I would be on my way towards the less luxurious life which awaited me beyond the gates of this house. There were different types of bath wash bottles, soaps and shampoos lined up on three shelves, along with lotions, moisturizers and other stuff. The fragrance drove me crazy that I was tempted to grab a bottle or two before leaving, not that the owner of this house would mind or realize that a few bottles were missing. Dude had some real money. I took my time brushing every part of my body like I would never be able to have this kind of a bath in my life I pulled on a robe and walked out of the bathroom and was almost scared out of my wits when I noticed a chubby middle aged woman dressed in a maids dress beaming at me as she stood beside the wardrobe. I realized I was still holding my chest. "I"m sorry to have scared you like that." She quickly apologized, smiling warmly at me. "No, that"s alright. I was just startled for a moment." "My name is Margret. And I work for the young master. Your name is Kiara, am I right?" "Yes." I nodded. "Miss, you have been invited to join breakfast with Master at the table downstairs." I laughed nervously. "I...I actually don"t know where my clothes from yesterday are. I would like to wash them first and maybe borrow a new pair of clothing, if it"s not asking too much." Her eyes went wide, "Oh no my dear. That wouldn"t be necessary." She said and threw open the massive white wardrobe. Beautiful gowns, cocktail party dresses and casuals were neatly lined in the wardrobe. The formals hung at the top. I was mesmerized by it. She couldn"t possibly be serious "You can choose any dress you like from here darling and meet us downstairs for breakfast." "This is too much...I can"t..." "Young Master is a very generous man. They are for you to choose." I was awed for a minute and then I quickly dug through the clothing like a woman in a branded store during a 70% off sale. After about fifteen minutes of contemplating, I decided to go for a long turquoise gown that looked lacy and even sexy. It was off shoulder and was decorated with beads and other studs. The fabric melted beneath my fingers. This was once in a lifetime chance. "Margret, I know the dress is too fancy for breakfast, but is it okay if I wear it right now and come back later and choose a casual denims or something?" "Of course dear, they are all for you." After I was done dressing up, Margret offered to do my hair and some light makeup to hide the bags under my eyes. I was more than glad for all the help I could get. It was obvious that Lockhart had a lot of money and he didn"t see any problem in letting a homeless woman grab a dress or two. I wondered if the clothes belonged to his wife or his girlfriend. When I glanced into the mirror, I looked so much different as if the girl from the previous night had somehow disappeared into thin air replacing with a woman who looked much older wearing the kind of clothes only posh women wore. I couldn"t even recognize myself. At 9:00 am sharp, I made my way down the marble staircase wondering if it was really alright to borrow expensive clothes from strangers. I"d even managed to stay a night at the man"s place. A few hours ago I wouldn"t have thought I"d be here getting invited for fancy breakfast at a handsome man"s home. It wasn"t hard to spot the dinning area. When I entered the room, the strong aroma of fried eggs and pancakes entered my nostrils. My mouth watered and my stomach growled, then I remembered that I hadn"t eaten anything since yesterday noon. Lockhart was already seated at the head of the long dinning table wearing casuals, grinning at me, inspecting me the way a spectator at a art museum would. Then I recalled that it was a Sunday, no wonder the guy seemed all cheerful, sunshine and butterflies. I sat down a few seats down from him. "Good Morning, Kiara." Jasper said. "Good Morning, Mr. Lockhart." I said. "Thank you for the clothes and having me for breakfast." "The pleasure"s all mine." he said, still smiling at me. "By the way, you look absolutely stunning today." "Thank you, sir." "Please call me Jasper or Jazz if you prefer. My friends and family call me Jazz." I smiled, "Okay." "Come sit a little closer. I don"t bite, I promise." Jasper sniggered. When I did as I was told, he gave me a satisfied smile and turned to Margret, "What do we have for breakfast today?" Margret gave an elaborate list of the menu she had prepared which was a little too much for a table which consisted only of two people. Unless, Jasper ate like a monster. Another petite maid walked towards the table and served portions of food. My plate was towered with pancakes oozing with maple syrup, a side dish of strawberry short cake, toast with blueberries and fresh strawberries and sunny side omelette with hash browns. There was even orange juice and coffee. Jasper probably realized that his little breakfast had rendered me speechless because he said, "Please help yourself." I dug into the food like a hungry lion caged up in Sahara Desert for months. I thought I"d forgotten who was watching me for a second because I literally devoured everything. I noticed from the corner of my eye that a uncanny smile was still plastered on his face. "So, Kiara, why did you kill your father?" The fork slipped right out of my hands and I suddenly lost my appetite. I thanked god that Jasper had chosen a time when I was almost done with my breakfast to ask me that question. I hadn"t expected him to be so blunt. "He...he was going to hit my mother, he always did that. He took all our savings and beat up my mom. I...I couldn"t take it anymore so I hit em with a flower vase and he died on impact." "But you fled from the scene, and that makes you a criminal. The police will want you." I placed the fork beside my plate and stood up. "I"m sorry, I didn"t mean to cause you more trouble than I already have. And I understand that me being in your house could jeopardize your reputation. Thank you for everything, I"ll just go upstairs and get my things." I started towards the staircase when he said, "where are you going?" "I"ll look for a safe place." I said giving him a meek smile. "Although I"m not sure how I should repay your kindness." "That"s it. I saved your life and I need something in return too." He said, and I swear I saw his blue eyes turn a darker shade. "I don"t have anything to offer, I...." "So here"s the thing, Kiara. We make a deal. You stay here with me and in return I will protect you from the police or the FBI who I"m sure are still looking for you." He crossed his legs, giving me that cocky smile. Suddenly he seemed like a different person all of a sudden. "Why do you want me to stay here?" I asked. "Because I think you are beautiful and I would like a woman like yourself by my side." Something inside me screamed to leave, to just make a run towards the end of the hall and out of the door. "I"m really sorry, I can"t stay here. You have already done enough for me." His brows arched up, "I"m not giving you a choice, sweetheart and neither is it a request. You need to do what I tell you to." Who the hell was this guy? Had I gotten myself into trouble? "Or what, Mr.Lockhart?" I knew I wasn"t going to like the answer. "Well, I"m asking you nicely, am I right? I haven"t hurt you. Not yet, so if you want to make this hard for yourself, go ahead." I took a few steps back, turned on my heels and put my legs into motion as I bolted out of the dining area and into the never ending hallways. My legs picked up speed as I turned corners, coming across the vast rooms. Finally, my eyes traveled to the large door ahead. I thought it wouldn"t budge, but it gave away easily. I stepped outside into the courtyard where there was a large water fountain. The property seemed to be surrounded by trees. Where had he brought me? I regretted sleeping on my way yesterday night because now I had no idea which way lead to the outside world. I made my way towards the wide iron gates and glanced around to find a guard settled at the gates. "Open the damn gates!" "I"m sorry Miss, I can"t do that. I have orders from Mr.Lockhart." "I SAID OPEN THE f*****g GATE OR I"M GOING TO BREAK IT!" I yelled. In a moment of desperation, I began climbing the gates and the sirens blared furiously. Before I could even make it to the top, I felt an arm seize my leg and drag me down. "It"s the last time I will ask nicely, Kiara, lets go back to the dinning room. Margret would like to know what you prefer for dinner." He smiled like a host asking his friend to stay over for dinner and drinks. "Open the door, Mr. Lockhart." I said. "Can"t do." "Please!" I muttered. He grabbed my hand and yanked it towards himself as he walked in the direction of the mansion. I tried to shrug it off but he had a iron grip over my arm. With an inhumane strength I pushed him, smacked his face and ran back to the gate screaming and trying to claw my way towards the gate, but he beat me to it and slapped me so hard across my right cheek that I thought I saw stars, the way they show in cartoon shows. "I was being a complete gentleman, but I guess you don"t want to be treated like a lady. Have it your way then." He growled as he got hold of my ankle. "Please let me go, Jasper." He dragged me across the ground towards his mansion. I just heard my own screams echo through the hallways and that"s when I knew how much trouble I had gotten myself into. I had been kidnapped.
