Chapter 1 The Return
In the third year of my marriage to Adrian Vale, his first love came back. Without a second thought, he left me in the hospital just after my progesterone injection and rushed to the airport to pick her up. I told myself it was nothing more than a childhood bond. I never expected it to be only the beginning. Later, I finally came to my senses and asked for a divorce. When I lay in the hospital recovering from the miscarriage, his eyes were red as he held my hand, refusing to let go. "Lara, please... don't leave me, alright?" he said. He still didn't understand. From the moment I signed the form stating that I voluntarily requested termination of the pregnancy, there was no future left for us. In my second month of pregnancy, I had been hospitalized because the embryo was unstable. The cold drip of the IV seeped into my veins, leaving my hands numb and chilled. I glanced cautiously at the man beside me and said hoarsely, "Could you get me a heat pack from the nurse's station?" Silence filled the private suite. No response came. Adrian pressed his lips together, his gaze fixed on his phone. Then a sharp notification tone broke the stillness. "I have something to deal with at the office. When you're done, take the key and go home yourself." He grabbed his suit jacket from the side and walked out without looking back. My heart dropped straight to the bottom. So, he knew. I recognized that notification tone. On Adrian's phone, only Seraphine Lark had that privilege. Seraphine was coming back. That was why he couldn't wait. The cold in my hands and feet was nothing compared to the humiliation rising inside me. I kept telling myself it was fine. They were just childhood friends. It was normal for them to be close. My phone suddenly rang, shrill and urgent. The moment I picked up, my best friend's voice exploded in my ear like firecrackers. "Lara! Your husband went to the airport to pick up Seraphine. They were photographed walking out hand in hand!" I forced a faint smile, forgetting she couldn't see me. After a long pause, I said, "It's fine. They're just childhood friends. Holding hands isn't a big deal." She sighed helplessly and hung up. Only the ache in my chest reminded me how false those words were. After the IV finished, I went home alone.
