Brenda had never once told Zavia that she knew Liam personally. It was all just talks about her relatives working at his company. Not this. What was their relationship? What were they doing at a place like this?
“Be on the lookout you two,” Liam demanded, hands slipping into his pockets. “Or get the f**k out of here.”
The two reluctantly separated, glaring at eachother as they straightened up. “Yes, Alpha.”
‘A-Alpha?’ Her heart stopped at that word. The wheels in her head finally began to turn and a sweep of dread passed over her, making her legs go weak.
From the get go, there weren’t any breeders, were there? That poster wasn’t a message. It was a set-up.
And she had been the only one dumb enough to fall for it.
She hunched over, nails digging into the tree as she swallowed the bile rising up her throat. She felt nauseous. Her heart was thumping so loud that it was the only thing she could hear.
This felt like a crazy nightmare.
Of all things, the man she kept longing for, the man who had her craving everything he could offer, was a werewolf? He was the very species her grandmother warned her never to cross paths with! Her best friend was the same too, one of those monsters. What were they after? What would they do if they found her? Were they a part of that wicked cult?
Her legs were shaking. Her chest was aching. But she had to run. She had to get far away from them!
She covered her mouth with a hand, sweat pooling on her skin as she slowly lifted a foot, stepping back. Then the moment her shoes touched the ground, she heard the crack of a twig.
She paled, breathing hard as all eyes snapped in her direction.
“Z-Zavia???” Brenda blinked. “Why are you he---I mean...” She grabbed her hood quickly, holding it over her head as guilt swallowed her features. “...I--well...” She glanced at Liam, biting her lip. “Its not w-what it looks like! Err...well...my uncle...he uh...you know he knows Liam s-so—"
Liam c****d his head, holding up a hand that immediately had Brenda’s lips sealed shut. His green eyes pinned Zavia in place, rolling down her figure then back.
“I never took you for such a devoted stalker, Miss Brooks.”
Zavia’s knees buckled, falling back against leaves. Stalker? He thought she followed him here? How much did he actually know? All this time...had he been aware of her pathetic little trips to his house? Was it Brenda who told him?
No, that didn’t matter. None of that mattered anymore. As long as she played it off as if she had truly followed him here, she could survive!
“Damn.” The blonde frowned, nudging Brenda’s shoulder with his. “I almost thought we had one. Is this the Alpha’s stalker girlfriend? The one you were supposed to s---Mmhph!”
Brenda had slammed a hand over his mouth, yanking him back. “Shut the hell up. Seriously.”
Liam walked up slowly, a cigarette sitting between his lips. He shrugged off his cloak and stopped a foot away, stooping to her level. “Why so silent?” He tapped her shoe with his knuckles, head tilting as his lips parted to release a puff of smoke. It fogged her vision for a moment then it was gone, leaving behind a lingering scent of liquor from his breath.
“Hmm? Cat got your tongue?” His hand pulled into her line of vision and Zavia’s chest clenched as she watched it move closer. She thought he wasn’t going to, after all, to him, she must’ve been no more than a disease. But his hand collided, brushing her cheek.
Her breaths were ragged as he caressed the skin softly, barely resisting the urge to lean in. It didn’t feel tender, more like he was petting a dog than a person but still, she could feel heat spreading under his fingertips.
‘Run!’ Her subconsciousness reminded her, but Zavia didn’t move. She couldn’t. It wasn’t just heat...it burned. Glowing red veins swelled where they touched and for a moment, Zavia’s eyes went completely vacant, mind unable to think.
“For someone who looks so innocent...” Liam said, oblivious to the anomaly. “...you sure are dari---” A sharp sting cut him off. He pulled his hand back, looking down at his finger that’d now gone red, pricked at the tip. The blood slipped down, hitting dried leaves.
His brows knitted, but he flicked his wrist, dismissing it as nothing.
“Was the cash not enough?” He continued, returning his gaze to her.
As if finally getting to her senses, Zavia shook away the strange feeling and shuffled backwards out of his reach, colliding with the tree behind her. The glowing veins had disappeared. “W-What?” Her hands clenched into the ground, clutching a mix of dirt and dried leaves.
“I asked if the cash was not enough?”
Her breath hitched, eyes wide.
“A-Alpha, that’s---” Brenda tried to pipe in, but a glance over his shoulder was all it took to command her into silence. She shrunk back, sharing a look with the blonde.
“That day is still hazy in my mind...” Liam said, taking the cigar between his fingers. He let out another puff, this time through his nostrils. A sigh left him afterwards. The smoke rose in the air and he watched as it drifted.
“We made a mistake, but that isn’t the way you see it, is it? How did it feel... finally having a taste of the man you’ve always wanted?” He looked straight at her, piercing her with a stare that made her feel as if he was stripping her bare of her secrets with his eyes. “Now that I think about it, I should’ve let you decide...how much that body of yours is worth.”
Getting up, he tossed his coat at her chest, but Zavia smacked it away, her gaze sharpening as tears stung her eyes. “Y-You---!”
“Name your price.” He cut her off with a deep, impatient tone, not even a shred of guilt at her pain. “Then leave.”
Zavia bit the inside of her cheek, tasting blood. They say all good things must eventually come to an end. She had no right feeling offended. This was how he always was...a bastard at heart. She knew that.
It was her mistake falling for him, her mistake rolling around with a werewolf.
She swallowed the knot in her throat, forcing herself to a stand. She glanced at Brenda unconsciously, but she immediately avoided her eye.
This was how it was going to be? A single night and everything had changed?
“This must've been uncomfortable for you...” There was a bitter taste in her mouth that she couldn’t swallow. “But you won’t be seeing the likes of me anymore, Liam Pain.”
Liam's face pulled. Suddenly, his eyes were searching her face, looking for something she didn’t even understand.
Zavia looked away, her tongue sliding over her dry lips. She didn’t linger much longer, turning on her feet. She stumbled down the path as if fire scorched the earth beneath her, hardly able to breathe as the world spun...but she didn’t stop. Not even for a second.

A few pairs of clothes, cash and scent pills were the only things packed in a single sack on her back when Zavia left Brenda’s place that night without looking back. She went to a cheap hotel on the outskirts of town, far enough to feel a faint sense of security.
Midnight passed with her sitting in the wooden chair next to the bed, staring up at the empty ceiling. Her phone rang over a dozen times, Brenda’s ID showing up on screen. All were left unanswered.
When morning came, she had crept out of her hiding place and showed up to Doctor Bronks office as scheduled. But she was barely there, barely focused. She felt lifeless, empty...a version of herself that she thought no longer existed after falling for Liam.
“Congratulations, Miss Brooks. You’re pregnant!”
That was when she truly felt defeated.
