Unexpected Encounter

Zavia stumbled into the bedroom as her hand fumbled to unbuckle her heels at the ankles. She crashed into the bed, flopping down beside Brenda with a huff. She had just finished another hard day at work, although technically all she did was run around doing petty little errands for her co-workers. In her defense, they didn’t bother to give her any ‘real’ work, instead they had her scrambling across the street every five seconds getting coffee and food. But she couldn’t blame them. Brenda had hooked her up with the job and she immediately got assigned to a department she wasn’t even qualified for. “Breeee…” Zavia drawled, sluggishly turning her head to look at Brenda who was busy typing away on her phone. She shifted the moment Zavia’s eyes strayed to the screen and turned the phone away slightly, clearing her throat. But Zavia had already seen it. She was chatting with a guy she named ‘dumb blonde’. “What's up? Spit it out quickly, I’m having a heated argument with that t**t Davidson right now and I ain’t losing.” Zavia rolled her eyes, slipping her arm under her head. Davidson was the guy next door and he wasn’t even a blonde. “You know how I told you my family died when I was a kid, right?” She traced the pattern on the bedsheets with her finger, sighing. “I kinda just found out I have this relative over in another town. We've never met since way back, but she called to ask if I wanted to catch up and stuff. What do you think? If you were me, would you go?” “Well...” Brenda stared up at the ceiling, setting the phone against her chest. “I personally have a thing against family, but you... I guess you could if you're up for it? I mean, you’re a total loner. I’m basically your only friend and that’s beyond pathetic.” She laughed, fingers pinching Zavia’s cheeks. “Since she’s the only family you have left, won’t you regret it later if you don’t at least go see her? I think it’d be good for you.” “I don't know...” Zavia frowned. She’d been thinking about it all week, contemplating whether she should go or not. What she was sure of at least, was that her grandmother would’ve definitely dragged her there if she was still alive. “What if they knew your parents well? Don’t you want someone you can talk to about anything? Someone who’s always there for you?” “That’s you though...” Zavia shrugged. “That’s different! You’re family so you’ll get along fine...hopefully. If you're scared, I can tag along too.” Zavia shook her head, burying her face in the pillow. She had no intention of going back to stay. All she wanted was proof that there were more people like her and maybe... it wouldn’t hurt to go out for drinks once in a while. “If I go...its something I have to do alone,” she muttered, her eyes fluttering shut. “And before I forget...I think I’m gonna head over to Doctor Bronks this Frid---” A loud ringtone blared, the sound bouncing off the walls. “Its your phone.” Brenda reached for it from the nightstand, squinting as she read the caller ID. “Oh...Woah. This is actually CRA--ZY. You should probably take this.” Zavia groaned, waving her off dismissively. “Ignore it. They got the wrong number again anyway.” “It says here ‘my handsome boss’ though... You sure I should just ignore it?” Brenda wiggled her brows, laughing when Zavia's head flew up. “Liar...” Zavia accused, glaring. “I know you’re f*****g ly—” Her lips clamped shut when Brenda turned the phone to her and his ID flashed across the screen. Zavia’s eyes bulged, snatching it from her grip. Ignoring Brenda’s loud laughter, her hands trembled, fumbling to catch the phone when it slipped. She willed herself to calm down but her heartbeat only grew louder. What could he be calling for? Was he checking on her? No. That wasn’t like him. Was he giving her another chance? That wasn’t like him either. Zavia grabbed her hair, cursing under her breath. “f**k it!” A shaking finger hovered over the answer button. She was nervous, yet still unable to help an excited smile as she finally pressed down. But...the call ended the very moment she clicked, the ringtone going dead. Her smile dropped. “What the---no! f**k f**k FUCKKK!” - - - It was the night of the ‘ghost party’ and Zavia was standing at the edge of the abandoned village, Brale Borrows. She made sure to pay the driver to wait for her, otherwise she’d have no way of getting home unless she phoned Brenda. Staring at the rundown shacks from a distance made her feel nostalgic, bringing back childhood memories that had not been clear before. Her house was further in towards the back if she was remembering correctly. It was already breaking apart back then, so she wouldn’t be surprised if it was gone entirely. Looking down the empty street, she spotted the flash of a light further down. She glanced around, her hands gripping her arms. It was pretty dark out and the thick forestry surrounding the place didn’t make her feel any safer. But the light was a sign that at least someone else had arrived. The poster said 8pm and currently, it was ten minutes past that time. Was she a bit early? Deciding not to walk in the open, she tredded along the edge of the woods, her lip stuck between her teeth. Her hand began to sweat against the phone held tight in her grip and she slipped it into her pocket, wiping her palm on her top. Ever since the day Liam called, she had kept it close night and day, even going as far as watching it in the middle of the night. He hadn’t called again...unfortunately. She wanted to ring him back, but what if she was going crazy over a mere misclick? Zavia paused at the sound of chatter, her eyes spotting moving figures. It wasn’t just one but three. Lips wobbling, she crept up slowly and stopped once close enough, grabbing a nearby tree. They were wearing cloaks with their backs turned to her so she couldn’t make out their faces, just their silhouettes. What was she supposed to say? Maybe she shouldn’t have come empty handed? “How long do you plan to stay out here anyway?” One spoke. ‘A male?!’ Zavia blinked. She had never seen a male breeder before. Was it even possible? “I told you no one would come...only an i***t would show up here. Why did we even listen to this dumb b***h’s bullcrap?” Zavia swallowed, stepping back. Something about this suddenly felt unsettling. What were they talking about? Were they all male? “It was worth the shot though. Hahaha!” A female spoke this time...but her voice was so dangerously familiar that Zavia felt every trace of air suddenly leave her lungs. ‘B-Brenda?’ “You think this s**t is funny, you i***t?!” The man lunged for her, catching her in a head lock as she laughed loudly. They stumbled slightly and the hood shifted on her head, showing a face Zavia knew all too well. It was really her. “Let me go, you bi---” “Give it a rest.” The man next to them had finally opened his mouth, and at the sound of that familiar cold sterness, Zavia shook in place, her eyes as wide as saucers. Liam Pain. Why...were they together?
