Ghost Party

--- One month later: --- “Bree, for the thousandth time, did you finally check with that uncle of yours or whoever the f**k you said works with him?!” Zavia rolled over on the bed, her elbows digging into the mattress and her chin sitting in her palms. Her eyes went to the doorway, watching as Brenda stumbled in with two suitcases in her hands. “Please tell me you did!” She begged, beating the sheets with her legs. “How is he? Did he find someone else to take the job yet? Who is it? Don’t tell me its a woma--” “Trust me, I have many ways of knowing what Liam Pain does, but please tell me why the hell you keep asking about that d**k who took advantage of you?!” Brenda tossed the suitcases in, hands on her hips as she caught her breath. “And I didn’t carry this s**t for free, got it? Get cooking...!” She lunged for the bed, slamming into Zavia’s back without remorse. “He didn’t take advantage of me.” Zavia groaned. “I told you...it was the other way around! C’mon just do this one thing for me and I won’t ask s**t about him again. Look!” She stood up, pressing a hand over her heart. “I swear it, okay?!” Brenda looked over at her as she stood there firmly at the foot of the bed and scowled, tossing a pillow at her face. “Would you just grow a brain? You don’t even have spare change to pay your rent or buy a cheap-ass f*****g Ramen from a convenience store ‘cause you refuse to use the money he gave you like a fool! Plus, you’ve been stuck at my place all week and now you’re moving in, you damn leech! How about you start thinking about yourself for once and not some dickhead who doesn’t give a s**t about you?” “I’m not ‘moving in’.” She grinned, shifting on her feet. “We're just hanging out...like em good ole days when I had nothing better to do.” “Get a job, please.” Brenda deadpanned. “I will. I promise I will...after you tell me whether his new housekeeper is a man or woman.” “Jesus...” It had been a little over a month since the incident with Liam, and Zavia had not only lost her precious job but also her apartment. In that messy situation, she had spent half the time moping about feeling sorry herself and the other half staring at the envelope he had thrown at her. Whenever she thought of him, it felt like she was going crazy. She wondered if he found her disgusting, wondered if he cared even a little that she was gone. Hopeless, wasn’t she? “By the way, you still stalking his house like a psycho? Wouldn’t it be funny if he actually has you on camera?” Brenda laughed. “You’re obsessed and its getting creepy, babe.” “Stop bringing that up...! I haven’t been back there since...w-well...” Zavia flushed. “...the start of the week!” “And its Monday, dufus.” As shameful as it was, Zavia had indeed been stalking Liam’s place under the excuse that she had to return his money, but everytime his car pulled up to the gate, she found herself pathetically hiding behind the closest tree. “Whatever. Can I raid your fridge? Its way too early for dinner.” She grabbed the hair tie on the nightstand, using it to catch her hair into a ponytail. “You know you’ve gained like ten extra pounds since crashing here, right? But knock yourself out...just don’t touch my nutella or I’ll freaking kill you!” Zavia grinned wickedly. That was exactly what she was going for. “Oh no you f*****g don’t!” Zavia slipped out the door, bolting down the hall. “Hey!” Brenda crashed into the floor with her leg tangled in the sheets. She recovered a second later, racing behind her for the kitchen. Zavia got there first, slamming the door aside with a triumphant grin. But the scent that knocked her as soon as the fridge opened up, made her shrink back, fingers pinching her nose. “What th—” A nauseous feeling shut her up. She grabbed the bin next to the counter, vomiting up the contents of her stomach. “The hell’s wrong with you?” Brenda grabbed the nutella jar from the fridge, hugging it to her chest as she watched from a safe distance. “Eew. What’d you eat while I was gone?” Zavia wiped her lips with back of her hand and glared down into the bin. This was the second time she’d vomited since day. Something was up. Was she sick? “I didn’t eat anything weird though...” She was about to get up when she caught sight of something in the corner of her eye, making her do an immediate double take. Swallowing, her heart sped up as she reached into the bin, shifting an empty bottle off a small poster. That was when she saw it clearly... the words ‘Brale Borrows’ written in bold. “W-What’s this poster?” She stammered. Brenda set the nutella down and pulled Zavia’s hair back, peeking into the bin. “It’s that ghost party, obviously.” She said, quickly stepping back with her face scrunched. “That’s gross by the way.” “What...party?” “You haven’t heard? They say its some weird ass ghost party and only rich dudes doing freaky s**t for a living knows where this Brale Borrows is. Its been flooding the web and streets though, so that’s why its the talk of the town lately.” Zavia trembled, falling back against the wall. Brale Borrows...was the place where what remained of her kind had sought refuge amidst the werewolf war back then. Aside from dying in the crossfire, they were targeted by packs who believed their entire existence was blasphemy. It was more like a cult devoted to breeder eradication. Her grandmother brought her to Brale Borrows when she was a child and from there, she had lived as the youngest amongst a few dozen, locked away from the world and struggling to survive. They stayed there for years before they learned of the existence of pills that kept their unique scents hidden. Since her grandmother’s death, Zavia hadn’t set foot back in that place. But there were faces she still remembered, people who popped into her mind every now and then. She had thought about going back...about reuniting with what was left of them, but she was too scared to return to nothing. “You look freaked out... Zav, you good?” Zavia sat there, pale as a ghost. She hadn’t met another breeder in so long, she wasn’t even sure any were still alive besides her. But Brale Borrows wasn't a name just anyone would know of. Which meant...this wasn’t just some ‘ghost party’. It was a message.
