Chapter 6 - Their Heartbreak

1702 Words
Present Day Blayn’s POV I can sense Kaitlin’s stress levels skyrocketing from across the weight floor. I turned quickly from the pull-up bars to see a giant man talking with her. She is managing her anger for now, so I turned away and finished my set. Before I can continue with another exercise, I feel her again. Shït. I moved to get a better look at her and saw no others around except that same dude, and when he turned, I got a better glance at who was beside her—double shït. It is the man w***e Beta Ryan Hart from the Red Moon Pack. I instantly drop what I am doing and make my way over to her. I hear the end of their conversation and immediately get irritated. “That’s because she isn’t just some woman, Beta Ryan,” I said, a little of my aura slipping in defense of my Alpha. I noticed him stiffen at my tone, and he turned to face me. The recognition of who I was reflected in his eyes when he looked at me nearly made me grin. I had been making waves since I took my position. “Beta Blayn, I didn’t know you were in town yet. This your mate?” He said to me, and I cringed. Not that I wouldn’t mind having her as my mate if I were straight. Kaitlin is a beautiful and strong female that any male would be lucky to claim as their own. But, I mean, it was Kaitlin. I saw her roll her eyes, and my heart tightened. I glared back at him and told him she was my Alpha. I was about to say more about Kaitlin before she cut him off, and he practically ran away. I smiled at her, gently feeling her anger and not wanting to set her off further. “Are you okay?” She looked at me with a blank expression. I could feel her emotions swirling, but I let her tell me the truth without pushing her. I reached to tap her nose, which brought a smile to her face. She batted my hand away, and her eyes cleared a bit more. “Yeah, I guess it will happen all day, maybe not like that. The condescending tones are what I mean. With Dakota here and all, it’s better to start preparing for it now.” My heart breaks for her, and she cannot catch a break. I nodded at her and left her to finish her sets without another word. She looked barely able to hear any of what I had to say, so I kept a close eye on her for the remainder of our workout. She looks sad. At least a lot less bleak than the last few weeks, I will chalk up to a win. I know it has been challenging. The fact that our pack was attacked and she was halfway across the world running away from her issues when it happened has eaten away at her. None of us blamed her. Hell, she wasn’t even supposed to be our Alpha. As the youngest daughter of Alpha John and Luna Anne, the title went to the oldest, Mark, or so I thought. He took over at 18 and was an incredible Alpha. We were stronger and more organized than most packs in our area. The attack was so out of the blue that it caught all of us off guard. Even the way Alpha Mark died still shook us all to our core. ---- *Flashback* ---- The sirens blared across the pack house, startling every single wolf. We were under attack! I rushed out to see more than three dozen rogues breaking through the tree line and racing towards unsuspecting wolves but stopped. Their smell was foul, and they were snarling at the scrambling lines of warriors, waiting for something or someone. I saw a wolf slowly emerging from the middle of their lines and thought it might be their leader. But it was not the wolf that caught my eye and made me scream for our Alpha. He had something in his jaw, dragging it underneath him like a felled rabbit. Something was not right here that made my wolf bristle in agitation. My wolf’s eyes struggled to see what was caught in the rogue’s maw, and then, finally, I processed just what–who was in the rogue’s mouth. Then we all heard the painful howl of our Alpha, whose Luna was in trouble. The wolf has our Luna Sara in his jaw. Silver Lake warriors howled in response, and our training kicked in. These wolves were dead. I couldn’t rip my eyes from Luna. She barely fights back, and I see marks all over her body as if they tore chunks of flesh and then allowed her to heal before preventing it. It was an eerily familiar technique, and I was on high alert. I noticed Tyler on the other side of our lines growling savagely. ‘Luna Sara is hurt badly. There is a lot of blood trailing them.’ “I DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!” Alpha Mark commands the rogue leader as he skids to a stop before the line of rogues. The rogue throws Luna Sara to the ground and pins her under his foot as he shifts back to his human form, clothed. Wait… no one outside this pack can do that. “Now, now. I have your darling mate under my foot here. Is that how you should talk to your Alpha? Take one step forward, and she dies.” He sneers out. “How dare you touch my mate!” Alpha Mark roars back, “You will never be Alpha, you filthy mutt.” Luna Sara whimpers out, calling for Mark, and my heart shatters for them both. I can tell she doesn’t have much left in her. Mark’s attention immediately shifted to her; he knew in that instant what I had just figured out for myself. Pain flashes in his eyes as he looks over us, taking in our positions. We outnumber them now. “Now, Alpha,” The rogue spat at Alpha Mark’s feet, “You will do as I say because you no longer have power here. I had been foretold this pack would be mine, and now it will be. Your darling sister will be MY mate, and we will rule the supernatural together. I know her secret, you see. I know her power.” The rogue hysterically whispers the last part. Mark tenses, taking a step forward. What is the rogue talking about? Before we can react or stop our Alpha, the rogue pushes down on Luna Sara’s neck, and we all hear the snap. All hell breaks loose as we immediately attack. I am lost in the chaos, killing all the rogues my wolf sees in retaliation for killing our Luna. Blood is everywhere. Only a handful of rogues remain, and we have them trapped. It takes us little time to dispatch the “army” this rogue has brought, and he looks terrified even in wolf form as Mark is circling him. “You dare to enter MY land, attack MY mate, attempt to take what is MINE by right.” Mark spits out, communicating in his wolf form. “We are not wolves to be messed with. You made a mistake today, killing my mate.” He looks feral now because of Sara’s loss. Beta Peter also notices and gets closer to protect Mark. Everyone missed the lone wolf in the tree line, and I would have been too late to reach him. When Beta Peter moved, he left his flank open to the rogue. The rogue flies out and clamps down on Peter’s ribs, ripping them apart. He was gone before I could shout my warning. I am left speechless. I see Tyler flying at the rogue, clamping his jaws down its throat and ripping it out, but it’s too late. Our packs howled in pain at the loss we all felt. Mark can’t handle it and attacks the rogue leader without warning. The battle between the two males is nasty as both are more wolf than man. Mark is entirely feral, taking rips of the rogue left and right; it won’t be long before he ends it. The rogue senses his end, giving everything he has and making several fatal blows that hit their target. Mark is bleeding everywhere; it does not look good. “Who are you?” He snarls, coming out of his feral haze. Mark’s family could communicate in their wolf form with anyone, never needing to shift and leave themselves exposed. It was a rare gift. We don’t know the extent they are capable of, but they protect all that cannot defend themselves, and our loyalty to them surpasses the need to know. My wolf commands my attention as the rogue is having trouble now and shifts back, stumbling, holding on to his neck, blood spurting everywhere. “If you must ask, cousin,” the rogue wheezes, “then I am ashamed to be your family.” Mark lunges as soon as the words are out of the rogue’s mouth and tears the rogue’s head clean off. He falls to the floor himself. Oh shït, the entire pack falls silent. The rogue is Adam, Mark’s cousin, whom we banished from the pack a few years ago. It explains so much. Half the warriors peel off to check the pack and borders. They aren’t blood cousins. Mark’s Aunt and Uncle adopted Adam when they couldn’t have pups. Adam was caught molesting a young wolf and was banished immediately from our pack a few months ago. I ran to Alpha Mark and knew immediately he was gone. I let off a long, sorrowful howl; our pack followed. I shifted back and directly called for Alpha John. Some warriors also shifted back to their human form, and we carefully carried Alpha Mark, Luna Sara, and Beta Mark’s bodies to the house. Alpha John and Luna Anne are sobbing on the pack house steps.
