Present Day
Blayn’s POV
I looked over and saw Kaitlin still finishing her workout. She was safe and unbothered, and hardly anyone was left in the gym, which made me feel at ease about her safety.
I tried to focus on my workout, but the memories were pulling at me more forcefully than usual as if I had to remember every detail.
I will never forget the heartbreak of that day, and I know no one from Silver Lake will ever forget the absolute pain in Alpha John’s and Luna Anne’s faces as we carried their only son towards them. When everything was cleaned up, and the borders were secured, they called us into the meeting room in the pack house.
It wasn’t long before I was sucked back in.

“Can I have everyone’s attention, please?” Alpha John called out, and the room quieted instantly.
“Thank you. Thank you for your fierce loyalty to Silver Lake today in defending our home and for your leadership. I know most of you are now confused over the particulars of today’s attack. I hope I can answer some questions.” He started. He looked tired and lost himself, but he straightened and glanced back at his mate before continuing.
“Adam, my nephew who was indeed banished from Silver Lake, was behind the attack today. For those of you who are new to us, Adam was my adopted nephew. He was banished from our pack after it was proved that there was molestation against a fellow pack member. As we all know, that behavior is unacceptable and violates pack law.” His voice wavered as a woman, probably his brother’s mate, cried out in pain.
“From what we have gathered, he lured Luna Sara out to him. We found a note addressed to her that illuded Adam had Mark chained up, and if Sara would go in his stead, Mark would live. We believe whoever was working with Adam wanted Sara.”
Murmurs broke out in a hushed wave, and Alpha John held up his hand to quiet the room.
“We don’t know when the letter was from or that she was missing from this false note. This has been discussed with our warriors, and a new safety plan is being formulated to ensure this never happens again. According to pack records, Luna Sara was supposed to visit her family, but they had no idea she was coming, proving that something somewhere was disconnected.”
“What does this have to do with Adam attacking Alpha? I was there. I heard him claim he was the rightful Alpha?” A warrior said, not in an angry tone but one of confusion.
“Adam believed a prophecy from a witch who had stayed there when our kids were young. The witch was telling fortunes to anyone who would listen, and she had prophesied that Adam could rule as Alpha with Kaitlin as his chosen mate should Kaitlin choose that path. Together, they would rule as the Alpha King and Queen.” John said, and everyone was so silent that you couldn’t hear a sound.
“Of course, that is ridiculous; the royal lines died centuries ago. The witch failed to mention that Kaitlin had to be willing to take him as a chosen mate should he present himself as worthy. When Kaitlin was rejected, her path changed; she left instead of seeking comfort in the pack. Adam was banished before Kaitlin's rejection, but that news was hardly kept quiet, which is why he attacked; he wanted her." John grumbled but continued quickly.
"The information was part of a test from the moon goddess for Adam, and there was some truth to it. As an Alpha pup, she could–will now be Alpha with Mark gone.” John tried to play off that Kings and Queens were myths, but my body shivered as if an ancient hidden truth was buried in that statement.
“We have decided to share all the truth of our lineage with you as Adam’s decision to attack has left us with little time to prepare everything in the way it should have been done. We, I, ask each one of you now to swear an oath. The information we are about to divulge is secret. Should anyone disclose the following information with anyone outside this room, you will find a very unpleasant death following close behind.”
I shuttered.
“What do you want us to do, Alpha?” Someone said in the back of the room.
“I will ask you to forever swear your loyalty and allegiance to us. With this oath, your word will be bound by the Goddess who protects Silver Lake. She keeps this oath and will seek revenge for breaking it.” His voice was deep and unearthly.
I was confused. Does a different Goddess protect Silver Lake?
“I will swear it, Alpha.” The same person said, crossing his arm over his heart in respect. The whole pack followed, and my mate and I were included.
“If you do not wish to participate in this or have harmful intentions, I ask you to leave now. I grant you this blessing and will support your decision if you wish to leave the pack.”
No one moved. He nodded his approval of our loyalty.
“Very well. I, Alpha John Hamil, call upon her grace of the Silver Lake. Lady, I ask you to bless the oath we swear to you today, to bind our spirits with you, to protect our secrets in this life, and to bring about death by breaking this sacred vow. To seal this, we all swear, In Veritate juramus (We swear to the truth).”
Like everyone else, I was suddenly urged to declare the exact phrase with my life. In unison, we all said, “In Veritate juramus.”
I felt a spark run through my heart, and suddenly, my eyes opened. A beautiful woman stood beside Alpha John, smiling at him. She moved fluidly, draped in shimmering blue gowns that ebbed and flowed like water, and I realized she was a goddess.
Holy shït, another goddess was watching over the pack.
What the hell? Has there always been a goddess besides Selene protecting us?
“Accipio (accepted).” Her beautiful voice echoed through the room.
I was stunned. I rubbed my eyes to make sure she was real, and when I opened them again, she was gone. But she was real, as everyone else around me, including Tyler, muttered about her.
“Now we can speak freely, the truth about all .” John almost sounded relieved at that.
“Kaitlin is our firstborn.”
The room was silent almost immediately. I am sure my mouth dropped open, along with everyone else’s.
“We are descendants of Selene, an exceptional type of wolf. The gods have protected us for centuries for who and what we are. We have been endlessly hunted for our gifted females by impure wolves looking to take power for their own. My brother and I are not nearly as gifted as our females.” He continued.
“Our powers, or gifts, only manifest after a test from Selene. The test is not for us alone, but also for our mates. When we decide to pup, we usually birth females first, and if she possesses a powerful gift, she is held with the goddess until we have a son to protect the female. My brother and I are a rare set of males birthed in our lineage without having a female in our generation.”
“Our son, Mark, was presented as the oldest. This is for Kaitlin’s protection because she is unique. Once he turned four, Selene returned Kaitlin and gave our pack memories of having a second-born daughter because she was the strongest gifted wolf born in a millennium.”
“None of you remember Anne being pregnant before Mark for her safety. But we got our daughter back when Selene told us it was time, and everything appeared normal. We had to raise Kaitlin according to the Goddesses’ wishes. She was not to be identified as a female Alpha nor inherit the title unless things went wrong. Things went very, very wrong.” John started to cry, and his mate came forward and comforted him.
“The rumors about us are lost for a reason, so there are no wars or constant attacks on our family and pack. Very few know what we indeed are. If they do find out, they find themselves at death’s door very quickly,” he states.
Holy shït, how much more could there be? Tyler takes my hand in his and squeezes it tight.
