Blayn’s POV

Flashback Continues*
-----
Alpha John is blowing my mind right now. He stiffens and looks as though he is struggling with his next piece of information.
“My bloodline, including my brother, son, and Kaitlin, are Silver Wolves.”
Gasps sound all around, and many she-wolves start to cry.
I have always felt a deeper connection to Kaitlin, but now feel incredibly protective of Kaitlin. My gut swirls with the pain and misery of our last conversations and how badly I wanted to forgive and forget what had happened between us. She is my fücking best friend, a silver wolf, and she is alone out there with no protection. My wolf snarls in my mind that we aren’t there beside her as we should be.
“She is bound in ways she does not yet realize to this pack and to bring peace to the supernatural realm, should everything go according to the Goddesses’ plan. The Lake on which we have built our life helps to strengthen us in times of peace; our powers of healing, truth, and strength are true to some extent. We can heal others with our touch and never get tired.”
“At the first meeting with another wolf, we know the truth of one’s heart and intentions, once we understand what is happening, that is, usually we just chalk it up to being a great judge of character.”
Everyone chuckles as he tries to tell a genuine joke.
“We have the strength of 100 wolves to help defend ourselves and our pack in times of battle. Silver wolves can communicate with outsiders in their wolf form. Many believe we have other powers, but this is not the case, at least for my brother and me.”
Alpha John’s brother nods in acknowledgment as hundreds of eyes look to him and his mate.
“We have hidden our powers because we are true descendants of Selene and are bound to her and what is needed of us in our lifetimes. Many of our ancestors have been hunted because of the powers they possessed. To protect us and make us realize their importance, we only receive our powers once we have found our true mates.”
“But Kaitlin was rejected,” A warrior says, and others murmur their agreement.
“I only know what Selene had foretold. We knew of Mark’s death if Kaitlin’s first mate failed his test. The witch I mentioned earlier is not a witch. It was Selene herself. The next part of Kaitlin’s test is about to begin with this series of events.”
“That is cruel of the goddess to give you a hint of death.” Someone in the back speaks out.
“It is not our place to decide our fates. I have believed in Selene’s plan and will continue to trust her.” Anne says, coming to her husband’s defense. He takes her hand and smiles softly.
“I have faith in our Goddess. It was a gift to know that every moment with our children was a blessing. We made sure we loved them to the best of our ability and could only hope that they found what we were blessed to have. Once Kaitlin met Dakota, all these events began to unfold.” John continued.
“Selene knew of Dakota’s darker intentions, and his test was to see if his desire for her was more than his desire for power. He failed miserably, and despite all our hopes, we were left only with the task of ensuring we did what our Goddess intended us to do: raise Kaitlin to be as strong as she could be, to carry on our legacy of protecting those who cannot protect themselves.”
“How does Adam tie into the story?” Tyler asked, and I nearly choked from surprise.
“Adam wanted Kaitlin as his chosen mate. His trial was to see if he could be patient and pure of heart for her, but he failed. It is now up to Kaitlin to pass her test for her True Mate to be revealed. Only then will all her powers manifest. Our Goddess has blessed her, and I know Selene watches over her, but this is now all in her hands.”
’Still seems unfair,’ Tyler said in our mate bond, and I squeezed his hand back.
‘No, it doesn’t, but who are we to question the Goddess?’
“You are now sworn to protect her, but you cannot interfere with her tests. It would be best if you refrained from discussing this meeting with her. You will find that you cannot, if any part of what you say points you to this. Our mates have passed Selene’s tests for centuries, and our family has been spared the heartbreak you all witnessed today, but not all good things last forever. Our world is changing quickly, and we must adapt or be lost forever.”
“Selene told us when she brought back Kaitlin that this peace we have known would not be the case for her lifetime.“ He paused, and everyone gasped in horror.
“Each time a possible mate fails, a piece of us dies because of their failures. We are not punished by this, but spared the heartbreak that will come if everything fails. Kaitlin is currently navigating her path with the Goddess. This path should help her pass the tests ahead. We will not survive when she returns from abroad, as this is Selene’s wish. To make Kaitlin into the Alpha sooner than planned, but she was meant to be a long.” He chokes out the last bit of information.
Oh. My. Goddess.
‘This seems to cruel even for the moon goddess.’ Tyler snarls.
“We will appoint Kaitlin to her rightful title, and her rightful Beta will assume their position. You are all to be there for her, to guide her on her path.” John says as he clears his throat.
“Only she can make the right decisions. If you find yourself trying to influence any part of her path, you will find you cannot. The oath you just took keeps you from doing just that.”
“Dr. Owens will inform her that we have passed from a broken heart. Kaitlin needed to be away to grow and learn from what has happened here, and her previous wants were all fake until she was able to take her proper place as your Alpha. Little by little, her fierce need to be your protector, your light in the dark, will replace those false dreams. Your true Alpha Queen in this lifetime. We will announce the Goddess’s chosen Beta upon her return. This person has our full blessing, and we know they will help her to be the Alpha she was destined to be.” He takes a deep breath.
“We know all this information is a lot to process. Many of you were drawn to this pack for this very reason: you were chosen by the Goddess to be a positive light and influence in Kaitlin’s life. You were drawn here because of the purity and truth in your hearts. You are all blessed wolves, and we dedicate our lives to you and ask you to continue to dedicate yours to Kaitlin and our beloved Goddess.” In an instant, we are all on our feet with our arms crossed over our hearts despite the pain of hearing the devastating truth.

*End of Flashback*
----
I am pulled from the memory as Kaitlin walks to the locker room. I know she is headed to the shower from the look on her face, and I have a few moments to compose myself and figure out what I was supposed to remember from that. I was so lost in the memory that I took my eyes off her, and my wolf scolded me for getting sidetracked in the first place. He is right, though. I need to keep focused on her. Something monumental is happening, and I need to be on my game.
I rushed to my locker room and wiped my body down with some paper towels, as I hadn’t brought a bag. It was the best I could do. I headed out and found a vending machine near the front to lean on and wait.
I caught the faint scent of an Alpha I didn’t recognize and looked around, but I couldn’t see anything from this angle in the gym. No longer sensing the Alpha, I pulled out my phone. I try to find coffee places for us, as I know we both need the caffeine.
Goddess, I need it to soothe my soul after those horrible memories. I am an addict, but I know Kait is too. Finding a Dunkin’ down the street from here and on the way back brightened my mood. I sense Kait is about to head my way, perfect!
“Need coffee? There is a Dunkin’ Donuts on the way back to the Hyatt,” I said as I showed her the screen.
She looks radiantly at me, “You have read my mind!”
I feel her lace her arm through mine and drag me out the door, for three hours at the gym, she makes me trip over my own feet as she pulls me forward. This woman is getting stronger every day. I will take that as a positive sign.
