Nick's POV
When my temper went down, mom gave me a head massage with her homemade hair oil. She used to give me this massage at night when I used to live here. Massage always gives a good sleep. But today I don't have time for any sleep. I have to attend the meeting on dad's behalf.
"Sweetheart, do come back to stay tonight. I want you to be fully prepared before the full moon. For now you can go and attend the meeting. I will make your favorite dishes for dinner." Mom said,
"Mom, it's true that your Indian Punjabi dishes are my favorite. But I am sorry, I don't want to put on extra weight with that oily food." I said,
"Fine then I'll make tandoor dishes just for you." Mom said,
"Mom, you don't have to do so much for me but I would be really delighted if you did." I said,
"Anything for my little boy. Would you like to have lassi?" She asked.
"That will be a perfect dinner." I said before going to my room.
Within an hour I got ready and came down. Roy was waiting for me with the files needed for the meeting. I asked him to join me for the meeting as I know he could be of help to me. We left for the meeting after discussing the important points. It took around 2 hours to finish the meeting. After the meeting, I took Roy for lunch. It's actually for the first time we were having lunch together in the last 7 years. I ordered food for both of us as Roy sat reluctantly in front of me. I had chosen a private room so that no one would be able to hear our conversation.
"Roy, I owe you an apology. I never knew that you were one of my kind. Until yesterday you were just a mere secretary for me. But now I have understood that despite your high qualifications you chose to work as my secretary just for my father. I appreciate your loyalty and I am happy that I got someone like you to guide me all through these years. But I never treated you well. I shouted at you whenever I got angry even when it wasn't your fault and you remained silent despite knowing the truth. I am really sorry for whatever I have done in the past. I will try my best to rectify my mistakes." For the first time in my life I apologized to someone.
"There's no need to apologize to me. You are our future Alpha and whatever I have done, it's for the pack." Roy said,
"Cut the crap Roy. I am not your future and please don't call me like that. I just want Fred to take over dad as the Alpha. I'm just happy with my business." I said,
"You know that's not possible because Fred will soon have to take over his father in law. His father in law is really sick these days and I don't think they will wait anymore to announce Fred as their Alpha." Roy opined.
"Why can't he be the Alpha of two packs? I mean when dad occupied both the title of Alpha and head of all alpha's." I asked.
"That's different. Your father is the member of only one pack and holds the position of the Alpha of the same pack. Being the head of Alpha's doesn't make him a member of other packs. In the case of Fred he will have to give up membership of our pack to join the other pack." Roy explained.
"That means there are options to end the membership of the pack?" I asked, hiding my happiness.
"Definitely and for that you need consent from the Alpha. And I have seen your father giving permission to terminate the membership a couple of times. Most of the cases were because they will be shifting out of the state or the country. In such cases they won't be able to come to the pack meetings. But before giving them the consent, Alpha makes sure that the member going out will have the chance to enter another pack outside the state or the country." Roy said,
"How's that possible?" I asked.
"The Alphas of the world are connected, but I don't know exactly how. They share important information whenever it's needed. But there are also packs who are not involved in this friendly circle. They are called the enemy packs. The packs of Columbia used to be enemies before your father took charge. The Alpha makes sure before a member leaves through his connections that the ex-member will be safe and among our kind wherever he goes. Fred's case is different and I am sure your father will give him permission to leave the pack." Roy said,
"Now I have two questions. So you said that the packs of the Columbia province used to be enemies, does that mean that there are no enemies anymore? Secondly if Fred leaves the pack, will he be able to attend our family functions?" I asked,
"Yes Fred will be able to attend the family functions because it's not related to the pack. Joining another pack doesn't mean that you are ending your relationships. The only difference is that you will not attend the meetings of the pack." Roy took a deep breath before continuing.
"About your first question, I just have assumptions. These assumptions are drawn from the words I have heard when I was child. I'm not sure about its authenticity. But you will have to promise me that you won't ask or tell anyone about what I am going to say. With anyone I mean your parents included." He said,
"Okay I promise that whatever you tell me will be between us." I gave my word.
"I was about 8 or 9 when a big commotion started. One day me and my siblings were playing in the house when my parents came to us really worried. Since I was the eldest, they asked me to take care of the younger ones until they returned. At first I was happy because I got the role of a big brother. I will be ruling the young one at least for a few hours. But least did I know that it was going to be the scariest night of my life. Time passed by, and neither of my parents came back. I was left alone with a five year old sister and three year old brother at my house. I became more and more worried when they started crying. I still remember how I used the oven for the first time and fed my siblings. I tried to do it exactly as my mother. I literally became a caring big brother. I gave them food and put them to bed, but I couldn't sleep. It was midnight when I finally heard voices from downstairs. I tried to listen, and it was my mom but not with my father but with her brother. They were talking about some attacks and moving us to some secure place. When I heard my mother coming up, I quickly got into my bed and acted like I was asleep. I could hear mom entering the room, and one by one we were carried out. I tried to get a look and I was shocked to see my mother's face. There were several cuts and blood stains on her face. Same was the appearance of my uncle. They put us in the back seat of the car and took us to a secure place."
Our food arrived and Roy stopped until the food was served. I don't know if it was just my assumption or I just actually saw a tear escape from his eyes.
"After that what happened?" I asked eagerly.
"Least did I know that I was going to hear something that would shatter me to the core. I could hear mom crying and my uncle trying to console her. From their conversation I understood that there was a big fight with the enemy packs. At that time my father and mother used to work for the pack as Gamma. My uncle was talking about the Gareth family and how they were able to save our future Alpha. From their conversation, I understood that they were talking about a three year old boy whose name is Nicholas Gareth." I sat with an open mouth hearing my name.
"That night everything changed and my mother always used to say that whatever happens it happens for the good. That night between her cries she was repeating the same thing. I wanted to open my eyes and ask her why she was crying. But I knew I couldn't because my mother never liked to show her tears even to her children. After running for a long time I fell asleep and didn't hear anything else. When I opened my eyes I was in a different room. It was way bigger than our old room. When I came out my mother was preparing breakfast in the new kitchen. I looked around and understood that it's a big apartment. I asked my mom why we were there and she said that it's our new home. An eight year old boy was really happy because there were three rooms which meant that I could have one for myself. I sang and danced until mom called us to have breakfast. That was when I remembered about my father and I asked mom. She asked me to finish my breakfast first. I did as she said and then she took us to change our dress. She made me wear black suit and she herself changed into a black dress. I was happy that I was wearing a suit which meant that we were going for a party but least did I know that we were going to attend my father's funeral. I became an orphan overnight. I wanted to cry but then remembered my father's words. He used to say that it's the responsibility of a Gamma to lead the fight and save the pack. He was so proud to serve the Gareth family and so was my mother. A lot of our people died in that fight."
"How was that fight related to me?" I couldn't stop myself.
"I did ask the same question to my mother because I blamed you for my loss. That day she told me how you were kidn*pped by two enemy packs, one from inside the province and other from outside. That day witnessed the biggest fight in history. All the packs of the province came together to save you. The enemy pack within the province was defeated and banned from the province."
"I'm so sorry for your loss. I never knew that I became the reason for so many innocent lives." I felt miserable.
"No you were not because you were so small and the future of the pack. Since that day, your family protected all those who lost their dear ones. We were given everything for leading a good life. Your father protected us from that day onwards. Since my mother was a self respecting woman, she was reluctant to take the help. That's why your mother helped her to set up her own boutique. My mother lived her life for her children. Gareth's family always tried to give us the feeling of a family. That's the reason why everyone loves your family so much and is ready to do anything to protect you and your family." Roy said,
"What about your mother and siblings?" I asked.
"My mother is still running her boutique successfully and now is one of the top names of the city, Louinim. It's actually a name formed after your parents."
"I have been there a couple of times and I remember how that lady used to treat me as if I was a king. So your mother is Batista of Louinim?" I asked.
"Yes"
"What about your siblings?" I asked.
"My sister joined our mother and is helping her with the boutique. My brother recently graduated and is working for Fred."
I still had a lot to ask about that fight but decided to ask on another occasion. I have already scratched his wounds that made him shed tears. Not anymore. I will find some other way to find out what happened at that time.
