"Mrs. Reed... I'm sorry. We couldn't save the baby." The doctor's distant voice hit Isabella hard. Yet, it was the terrible reality that had just befallen her. For a split second, her eyes remained glued at the doctor. Her fingers curled tighter against her dress with each passing second while hoping he'd just laugh it off and say it was all a joke. "Mrs. Reed?" The doctor called, snapping her out of her thoughts. "Where is Lucas?" she asked the very first thing she could think of. There was a slight pause from the doctor. Then he said, "He left as soon as he brought you over. He said he'd be back and.." "Please leave, doctor." She swallowed, cutting him off. "I need some time alone." The sound of the door closing shut made her heart drop with it. Her eyes moved across the room and everything felt grey and empty as though to remind her of the cold feeling that was slowly creeping up her veins. Her eyes burned with tears threatening to spill out. Her baby could have survived if Clara didn't push her off the stairs. Nothing would have happened if Lucas had looked at her once and brought her to the hospital on time. Isabella shut her eyes tightly, squeezing out tears. Her heart was torn to pieces. Her trembling hands gripped her dress tighter and for the first time since waking up, the weight of everything settled heavily on her. She broke down in tears, unable to hold back herself. Her arms wrapped around her tummy as she remembered the day the doctor had confirmed her pregnancy. Finally, she was going to be a mother. She was going to have a baby with Lucas. It was barely a month ago and she thought everything would be better. She had believed the baby might finally give Lucas a chance to look at her differently. "I'm sorry baby," she cried. "Mommy was careless. I didn't protect you like I'd promised." She sniffed. "You were still so fragile. I didn't get the chance to feel you kick. I never..." she paused and bit her lower lips as words felt too heavy in her throat "I never got the chance to see you and hold you in my arms. I'm sorry I failed you." The more she thought about her baby, Lucas and everything, the more her heart felt so hot like it would rip out of her chest. But at this point, there was nothing Isabella could do than just grieve all alone. And even the hospital room suddenly felt so cold as if quietly reminding her that the one thing which could have meant so much to her... was no more. ______________ For what seemed like the hundredth time, Isabella's eyes moved towards the door when it creaked open. For a moment, she hoped it was Lucas. Just once, she wanted him to show up for her but Isabella's disappointment was so evident on her face when a nurse walked in, holding a tray filled with syringes and other things. The petite nurse walked closer, set the tray on the table and felt Isabella's temperature. "How do you feel, ma'am?" Isabella didn't respond to the nurse's question. She simply sat quietly with eyes still fixed at the door, ignoring every single question for examination. But to Isabella, she just wanted one thing. And that was Lucas. Five hours and he still hadn't come. When the nurse left after carrying out her business, Isabella felt the emptiness again. But this time, she wanted to know what's stopping him from coming over? It's been five hours since she woke up, so why isn't he here yet? Groaning out in pain, she reached out for her cellphone on the side table and dialed Lucas' number. With every ring, her heart raced and she just couldn't explain how strangely she felt. It rang until a stop and there was no response from him and without stopping, she gave it a second dial. After a fourth ring, Lucas finally picked. "I'm quite busy now, Isabella. Let the doctor attend to you for the meantime." Lucas said in his usual rough voice. Before Isabella could speak, the line dropped dead, leaving her stunned. But, she wasn't one to give up. Again, she dialed Lucas' number and the moment he picked up, she said in a low and calm tone. "I know you are busy with work right now Lucas, but we need to talk." "Isabella, I'm busy right now. I don't have time to talk to you," he said impatiently. "Lucas, I want the juice please." Clara's voice echoed through the phone. Isabella listened to every little sound over the phone. Lucas passing her the glass of juice, Clara saying thank you and blowing him a kiss... every scene flashed through her mind. "After everything Lucas, you're still there taking care of her again." Her lips quivered as she spoke. He grip tightening around the phone. "Don't be so cruel, Isabella. You're not the only one who was injured, Clara got injured too." He said in defence. Isabella folded her lips and sucked in a deep breath. "She got a scratch. I am your wife, Lucas! Can't you tell the difference?" she tried not to yell. "You have the doctor to take care of you, Isabella. Your bills are settled and if there is anything you need, just press the button beside your bed. I need to be here with Clara. She hates the smell of hospitals and you know that. I don't want her to fall sick because of that." "Lucas!" Isabella shut her eyes tightly, clenching her fists. "Our baby. We lost our baby, Lucas." There was a small pause from him and Isabella waited for a reaction from him. But then, he said in the most icy tone she has ever heard. "I know." The phone slipped from her hand immediately as she sat still, staring blankly into space. Tears welled up her eyes because sadly, this was the harsh reality right before her very own eyes.
