Chapter 1 - Overthinking
1 Attracted to you
"When is the meeting, Mylah?" I asked my longtime assistant, who was busy collecting the files I had just signed.
"A luncheon meeting tomorrow at the Grand Jewel Hotel," Mylah replied. She was a petite young woman who's been by my side since I was a teenager. While I worked my way up the ladder and established my status in the Crown family, she was my biggest support, closest aide, talented bodyguard, and best friend who knew everything about me, including my darkest secret. After all the hardships I had to overcome in reaching my ambition to become the heiress of my family's fortune, I'm grateful for the undying loyalty and protection she has shown me through the years.
"The hotel itself? Hmm, right into their lair," I chuckled. I couldn't believe this was happening–this was the rival company I'd been trying to topple these past few years. And finally, I'm about to buy one of their most significant assets. "Who else will be there?" I glanced at the window out of habit when I felt bored.
"Initially, we were supposed to meet only with the Kingston Corp vice president and the hotel director of Grand Jewel. But they insisted on having their senior manager included in the contract signing," Myla explained as she tapped twice on her watch, telling me we had to leave the office.
"Suspish," I put on my gloves and went to the door. My heels clacked against the marble floor as we exited and left the corridor.
"You're like a Bailey Sarian clone," she snorted.
I smacked her shoulder as we stepped into the elevator.
"Oh, come on. As if you didn't enjoy binge-watching all those episodes with me the other night," I rolled my eyes.
We continued to banter about some names of criminals and ended up confused. We seemed to have mixed up everything after watching too many shows. "I'll have to rewatch everything to prove that I'm right," I said as we landed on the first floor of the Crown Hotel, the biggest hotel in Landom City.
Mylah snorted again. "Uh-huh. Yeah, right," she answered in sarcasm after checking out with the security on the ground floor.
The Rolls Royce Spectre appeared on cue at the main entrance, which would transport us back to the villa. Mylah went ahead to scan the area. Right there, I realized how much we've grown closer after over a decade.
Like me, we sported the same brown hair, but hers was in a pixie cut, while mine was a medium bob. People who didn't know about our identities would've mistaken us as sisters.
"Tomorrow's going to be interesting," I remarked as I got into the back seat. "Hey, Malcolm." I greeted the driver. Like Mylah, he was among my loyal supporters who cared and stayed with me. Family feuds were a huge thing in my family, and it always felt like I was on the battlefield during get-togethers.
"I hope it'll end in a minute. Seriously, I smell fishy with their setup," Mylah huffed after closing the door.
"You're overthinking," I said. "I guess we should stop watching those murder mysteries for a while. It's getting on your nerves."
Malcolm beamed at us with a smile. "Where to, Miss Sophia?" He asked.
"To the villa, please. I can't wait to relax and unwind after a hard day's work," I sighed.
"Buckle up, ladies," he said. The car sped into the traffic on the way home.
"Seriously, we need to double your security team tomorrow. I really don't like the sound of those Kingston leeches squirming their way to you."
"That's a scary thought," I answered with sarcasm. "But that's unnecessary, Mylah."
I knew about Mylah's uncanny sense of foreboding. She'd most often be right about her instincts, making her a valuable asset. In eight out of ten scenarios, she was always right with her gut feeling.
Mylah took another deep breath and exhaled through her nostrils. She's the type who quickly gets mad at others, but not at me. Well, at the very least, she's trying not to lash out in front of her boss.
"Okay, okay. Just add two more guards and have them wait at the door. Happy?" I finally gave in.
She instantly tapped something on her phone and flatly smiled. "Yes. Got it."
I guess I'll have to be on my guard as well.
