To save her mother's life, Ella Brooks agrees to a contract with Adrian Stone, a powerful and merciless billionaire who previously caused her father's company to fail. For a period of one year, she must appear as his wife — a flawless public figure and a trapped figure in private.

However, beneath Adrian's strict control is a man burdened by past betrayals and deep sorrow. As Ella uncovers more about the reasons behind his harsh behavior, it becomes increasingly difficult for her to feel hatred towards him.

What started as a plan for revenge gradually turns into a growing attraction.

Chapter 1 — The Offer
The hospital smelled like antiseptic and fear. Ella Brooks stood by her mother’s bedside, her fingers gripping the thin blanket tightly as the heart monitor beeped in a slow, steady rhythm. Her mother looked too small under the white sheets — a fragile reminder of the woman who used to laugh through thunderstorms and dance while cooking breakfast. Now, her eyes were half-open, glazed with exhaustion. “Did you talk to the doctor?” she whispered. Ella forced a smile. “He said you’re strong. You’ll be fine, Mom.” But the lie burned in her throat. The truth was that the doctor had said they needed money now. Without another round of treatment, her mother’s lungs would fail within weeks. Ella had already sold everything — her father’s watch, her laptop, her car. She’d taken extra shifts at the diner, begged the bank for a loan, but it wasn’t enough. Not even close. When her phone buzzed in her pocket, she didn’t expect salvation. Probably another rejection. But when she saw the name on the screen, her breath caught. Julian. Her father’s former business partner — and the man who had introduced him to Adrian Stone. Her stomach tightened as she stepped into the hallway and answered. “Julian?” “Ella,” his voice came through smooth, as if he’d been expecting her call. “I heard about your mother’s condition. I might know someone who can help.” “Who?” she asked, her voice trembling. A pause. Then: “Adrian Stone.” The name felt like a knife sliding between her ribs. Her father had once called Adrian his friend — until the man bought out his company, stripped it to the bones, and left her family ruined. Her father had died of a heart attack not long after. “Why would he help me?” she demanded. Julian hesitated. “Because he owes me a favor. But you’ll have to go see him yourself.” Two hours later, Ella stood in front of Stone Industries, clutching her mother’s medical file to her chest like a shield. The glass tower loomed above her, its mirrored surface reflecting the grey sky. She felt small, underdressed, and terrified. At the reception desk, she gave her name. The woman’s polite smile faltered for a moment, as if she recognized it. Then she picked up the phone and murmured, “Mr. Stone is expecting her.” Expecting her? Ella’s stomach flipped as she rode the elevator to the top floor. The doors opened to reveal an office bigger than her entire apartment — walls of glass, dark wood, and cold silence. And behind the desk sat him. Adrian Stone. He looked even more intimidating than she remembered from the news — tall, broad-shouldered, and effortlessly composed in a black suit. His eyes, a deep storm-grey, flicked up from the papers in front of him. For a heartbeat, he said nothing. Then, his mouth curved into something between a smile and a warning. “Ella Brooks,” he said slowly. “It’s been a long time.” She swallowed hard. “You know why I’m here.” He leaned back in his chair, watching her like a chess piece he’d already planned ten moves ahead. “I heard about your mother. Julian sent me the details.” Her hands tightened around the file. “I’ll pay you back. Whatever you give me, I’ll—” “Don’t insult me with promises you can’t keep,” he cut in, his tone sharp but controlled. “You need three hundred thousand dollars. You make less than thirty thousand a year. Let’s skip the pretense.” Her face burned. “Then what do you want?” Adrian stood, moving closer. The air around him seemed to shift — colder, heavier. He stopped just in front of her, his cologne clean and dark, his gaze unreadable. “I want you,” he said simply. The words hung between them, electric and terrifying. Ella froze. “You want me?” she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. “What does that mean?” Adrian’s lips twitched, the faintest hint of a smirk playing at the edge. “You asked what I wanted. Now I’m telling you.” She took a step back. “You can’t just—” “I can,” he interrupted, his tone calm. “And I will. But don’t mistake me, Ella. I’m not asking you to sleep with me. This isn’t about that.” Her pulse quickened, though her cheeks burned. “Then what is it?” Adrian turned, walking toward the wall of glass behind his desk. Below, the city stretched endlessly — lights, movement, and money. Everything he had. Everything she didn’t. “I need a wife,” he said finally. Ella blinked. “A wife?” He faced her again, his eyes sharp. “A one-year arrangement. You’ll live with me, attend events, play the part. In return, I’ll pay for your mother’s treatment and give you five hundred thousand dollars at the end of the year.” She laughed — a broken, disbelieving sound. “That’s crazy. Why would a billionaire need a fake wife?” “Because,” Adrian said, his voice low, “I need to close a merger, and my board won’t approve it unless my personal image is… fixed. Investors don’t trust a man with my reputation to run a family-oriented brand.” “So you’re using me as a cover?” He didn’t deny it. “You’re beautiful, poised, and desperate enough to say yes. You’d be perfect.” Her chest ached, anger and humiliation twisting together. “You think I’d sell myself so easily?” “I think you don’t have another choice.” The silence between them felt thick and suffocating. Ella’s nails dug into her palms. He was right — and that made her hate him even more. “What happens if I say no?” she asked, her voice shaking. Adrian’s expression didn’t change. “Then I wish your mother peace.” Her heart cracked. “You’re cruel.” “I’m honest,” he replied. “And I always keep my word. If you sign the contract, I’ll send the first payment tonight. She’ll get her treatment tomorrow morning.” He walked to the desk, picked up a sleek folder, and slid it toward her. Inside was a neatly typed contract with her name already printed at the top. “I had Julian draft this,” he said. “He mentioned you might come.” So he’d known all along. Planned it. Waited for her desperation to drive her right into his lap. Ella’s throat burned. “You planned this,” she whispered. “You wanted me to beg.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “I wanted you to see what desperation costs. Your father never did.” It was a harsh blow — and it worked. She felt the sting of tears but refused to let them fall. “Sign it,” he said quietly. “Or walk away. The choice is yours.” Her gaze fell to the paper. Her mother’s name flashed in her mind — the sound of her coughing, the burden of the hospital bills, the slow fading of hope. A single tear slid down her cheek as she picked up the pen. Her hand trembled as she signed her name. When she set the pen down, Adrian’s voice was steady. “Good girl.” Something in his tone — part command, part admiration — made her look up sharply. He extended his hand. “Welcome to our arrangement, Mrs. Stone.” Her fingers brushed his as she shook his hand, and a jolt of heat ran through her. His touch was firm, confident, claiming. She hated that her heart stuttered. “I’ll have my driver pick you up tomorrow,” Adrian said, already turning back to his desk. “We’ll make the marriage official at the courthouse, then move you into my penthouse.” “That’s it?” she asked numbly. “Just like that, my life belongs to you?” Adrian looked up at her — those grey eyes unreadable, a storm just barely contained. “No, Ella,” he said softly. “Not your life. Just your time.”
