Chapter 1 – A Deal with the Devil
Sienna Blake sat alone in the cold, dimly lit apartment she once called home. The silence was suffocating, a void that gnawed at her every waking moment. The walls, once filled with the laughter and warmth of her family, now echoed only her own shaky breaths. The apartment had been theirs—a safe place filled with memories. But those memories were all that remained. Her family was gone, and with them, everything she had ever known.
It had all happened so fast. One night, they were all gathered around the dinner table, talking about the future, and the next, her world came crashing down. Gunshots. Blood. Her parents, the people she loved most, were gone, and the attackers left no trace—only devastation. Sienna had barely managed to escape the c*****e, hiding under a broken table as her family was slaughtered.
Now, she was nothing but a ghost in the city. She had no home, no money, and no allies. The only thing driving her was the desire for vengeance.
The sound of the doorbell startled her, cutting through the silence like a knife. Sienna froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She wasn’t expecting anyone. She hadn’t seen anyone in days. Her mind raced. Was it one of the men who had killed her family? Or perhaps someone else with a hidden agenda?
Her instincts screamed for her to hide, but something told her that running wouldn’t solve this. Taking a deep breath, she walked to the door and opened it, her hand trembling slightly.
Standing in the doorway was a man who seemed to exude power from every fiber of his being. Leonardo Moretti.
Sienna had seen him before. He was impossible to ignore—New York’s most notorious mafia boss. His reputation preceded him like a dark storm cloud. At thirty-two, Leo had built an empire, and with it, an army of loyal soldiers and enemies alike. No one crossed him without paying a price. He was the epitome of coldness and control. And now, here he stood, just outside her door.
His piercing blue eyes locked onto hers, assessing, calculating. His expression remained unreadable, the faintest hint of something—amusement?—flickering in his gaze. His tailored suit, dark and immaculate, made him look every bit the dangerous man he was.
"Sienna Blake," he said, his voice low and smooth, sending a shiver down her spine. "I’ve been keeping an eye on you."
Sienna’s pulse quickened, but she forced herself to remain composed. "What do you want?"
Leo’s lips curled into a slight smirk. "It seems you’ve found yourself in a rather... precarious situation."
Sienna felt the weight of his words. His presence was suffocating, like a predator sizing up its prey. But she wasn’t about to let him see her fear. Not now. Not after everything she’d been through.
"You can leave now," she said coldly, though her voice betrayed the vulnerability beneath her bravado. "I don’t have anything for you."
Leo didn’t flinch. He stepped forward, and for a moment, the world seemed to close in around her. His presence dominated the space, and she was acutely aware of the power he wielded—power that had likely been responsible for her family’s deaths.
"You misunderstand," he said, his tone smooth but firm. "I’m here to offer you a solution. Protection. Power. A way out of this mess."
Sienna frowned, suspicion clouding her mind. "Protection? From what?"
"From your enemies," Leo replied, his voice never wavering. "The ones who made sure your family’s blood stained the streets. You think they’re done with you? Think again." He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in. "You’re a target now, Sienna. Alone, with no one to defend you."
Sienna’s breath hitched. She knew he was right. But the thought of accepting anything from a man like Leo Moretti—especially after what she suspected his hands had done—was unthinkable.
"You’re not offering protection out of the goodness of your heart," she said bitterly, crossing her arms. "What do you want in exchange?"
Leo raised an eyebrow, his gaze flicking over her as if he were considering her question carefully. "You’re not as naive as you look," he said, a hint of admiration in his voice. "No, I don’t do charity work. But I do offer... mutually beneficial arrangements."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a crisp document, sliding it across the table to her. "This is a contract. A marriage contract. In exchange for your protection, you’ll marry me."
Sienna’s heart skipped a beat. Her gaze dropped to the paper in front of her, then quickly lifted back to Leo’s unflinching eyes. "What are you talking about? You want me to marry you?"
"Yes," Leo confirmed smoothly. "A marriage of convenience. You’ll have the safety you need, and I’ll have the control I crave. It’s simple." He leaned in slightly, his expression never changing. "You’ll be my wife, and I’ll make sure no one touches you. You’ll have everything you need—except freedom, of course." He let that hang in the air, a reminder of the price she would pay.
Sienna’s mind reeled. A marriage to Leo Moretti? She knew who he was. The stories, the rumors, the whispers. He was a mafia kingpin, feared by everyone who crossed his path. Marrying him would be the same as sealing her fate. It was no longer about survival—it would be about existing in a gilded cage, never knowing if she would be consumed by the darkness of his world.
Her hand hovered over the contract, trembling slightly as her thoughts raced. The pain from losing her family, the anger at the injustice of it all, clouded her judgment. She couldn’t go back to the streets. She couldn’t stay in hiding forever. And if Leo was the only one who could offer her safety...
"What’s in it for you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why would you want me?"
Leo’s lips curled into a faint smirk. "That’s the question, isn’t it?" He straightened, his gaze unwavering. "The truth is, I need a wife. A symbol of power. Someone who can help solidify my position. And you need protection. It’s a simple arrangement. We both get what we want."
Sienna swallowed hard, trying to steady her breath. She could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on her. Her life was in tatters, and the only thing standing between her and certain death was this contract. A contract with a man who could be just as dangerous as the enemies who were still out there hunting her.
"I’m not a pawn in your game," she said, her voice laced with defiance.
Leo’s eyes darkened, but his smile didn’t waver. "No, Sienna. You’re not a pawn. You’re a partner. And you’re the one who gets to decide if this is a game or something more."
The room was suffocating now. The silence between them stretched on, thick with tension. Sienna could feel the weight of his words, the truth of them sinking into her soul. She knew she was being manipulated, but she didn’t have the luxury of time. She had no other options.
Finally, with a shaky breath, she reached for the contract.
"I’ll sign," she said, her voice tight.
Leo’s eyes gleamed, but his expression remained stoic. "Wise choice."
Sienna picked up the pen and signed her name at the bottom of the page, sealing her fate.
As she looked up at him, uncertainty gnawed at her. She had just made a deal with the devil. She could feel the weight of her decision settling heavily in her chest, and for the first time in days, a flicker of hope ignited within her.
But there was something else lingering in the air.
"What’s your real reason for this?" Sienna asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and curiosity. "You’ve got everything—power, wealth. Why do you need me?"
Leo’s lips pressed into a thin line, and for a moment, the mask slipped. There was something in his eyes—something dark, something hidden. But just as quickly as it appeared, it was gone.
"I guess we’ll find out," he said cryptically, his voice low and dangerous.
As he turned and walked out of the apartment, Sienna stood frozen, the weight of the contract heavy in her hand. She had just made a deal with a man whose motives were as murky as the world he lived in.
And as the door closed behind Leo, Sienna’s mind raced with one burning question: What had she just signed up for?
Sienna stood there, the cold reality of her decision sinking in. She had agreed to marry Leo Moretti, but something didn’t sit right. What was he really after? What dark secrets was he hiding?
And most importantly, would she ever be able to escape his world—if she ever wanted to?
