Mia and Adrianna dropped Aiden off at his house and started heading to theirs in silence.
“What do you think about him?!!” Mia broke the silence.
“Aiden?! I think he’s cute.” Adrianna said looking out of the window.
Mia shook her head “You know I was not talking about Aiden.”
Adrianna sighed and looked at Mia. “If it were before, considering the fact he’s cute and I’m single “ her voice dropped a bit “I would have been attracted to him. But I don’t think I’ll ever love again.”
“Don’t say that to yourself!!!! You're only 22, you've not even seen the world yet. I told you before, Charles just turned out to be a scumbag ,trust me.” Mia interrupted.
Adrianna let out a low chuckle, filled with so much sadness. “ Yes, I'm only 22. I'm only 22 but everything seems to be going wrong in my life. I had an accident and entered a coma that lasted two years.” Tears started streaming down her face.
“Two f*****g years Mia. I wasted two years of my life in a coma only to wake up and find out I lost everything. Even my parents haven't been to see me ever since I woke up and you think I'm fine???! I'm in pain, Mia a type you'll never understand.”
The taxi driver secretly wiped a tear away and they drove in silence each of them with their thoughts.
After a while, they arrived at Adrianna’s house and she alighted.
“Text me when you get home,” she told Mia and left.
“Mum, Adrianna is your child too, how could you treat her like that??!!!”
Adrianna heard her twin yelling as she entered the room, wondering what was happening.
“She woke up from her coma thanks to us funding her bills, why do we have to go see her after she woke up?? She is our child not the other way round and it's not like she's not coming home again.” A red-haired woman retorted coldly.
“How do you think Adrianna will feel if she hears you right now??!!” Adrian was filled with anger. How could a mother treat her daughter like this??!!
“Who cares?! She should have gotten used to it after all she's just a woman and has nothing to add to this family.” Emily, their mother said.
Adrianna felt hot tears stream down her face. She bit her lips so she wouldn't make a sound.
Ever since they were kids, her parents had always been biased towards Adrian. They would give Adrian all the good things and only let her pick what he didn't like.
Even on their birthdays, they only did what Adrian wanted. When she was ten years old, Adrianna realized that her parents favored sons over daughters.
She thought she was already numb with pain, but hearing her mother say she didn't care about her hurts.
It hurts so much.
“ How could you say this Mom??! I'm highly disappointed in you.” Adrian went upstairs to his room.
Emily stared in disbelief
“Why is he so angry??!” she complained to her husband.
Adrianna waited till her parents left the living room before going to her room only to find out that her room was no longer the same. It was already redecorated as a guest room.
She finally realized that her parents never expected her to come back alive.
Adrianna sighed and told herself to get over it. She walked to her closet but could not find any clothes there.
She was about to go out of her room when she suddenly felt a warm embrace.
Adrianna immediately felt secure, needed, and protected.
“ Why didn't you tell me you were getting discharged so I can come pick you up??!”
Adrian questioned releasing her from his grip.
“I didn't want to bother you after all, Mia was there to pick me up.” Adrianna chuckled.
Adrian pouted, feeling aggrieved. “So Mia is now more important than me in your heart.”
She laughed hard at his childishness knowing he only showed this side to her.
Adrian felt relieved seeing her laugh finally.
“You were going somewhere before I came in?!”
“Uhmm yes, I wanted to ask you if you knew where my belongings are,” Adrianna replied the previous joyous atmosphere gone.
Adrian sighed knowing how Adrianna felt with what their parents did.
“Yes, they are in the attic. Common, let's go get them.” He gave Adrianna a smirk making her roll her eyes. With her knowledge of his character, she instantly knew he was up to something mischievous.
And sure enough “The last person to get to the attic do whatever the winner want for a week” Adrian shouted and took off.
Adrianna shook her head and ran after him laughing.
After playing around, they went back to Adrianna’s room, and Adrian helped her rearrange her room after which they sat down and started chatting.
“What are your plans now??!” Adrian questioned.
“Work. I’m going to look for a job.”
“That’s good. You can come work at the company…..”
“No.” Adrianna coldly interrupted “I don’t want to. I don’t want to work at the family company.”
Adrian was taken aback.
“But why??!” He questioned.
Adrianna looked at him sadly and said word for word. “Adrian, I know how much you love and want the best for me, but I need to be independent now. I want to be successful without the help of anyone, including you.”
Adrian understood her without her saying too much. He had always felt guilty towards her because of their parents favoritism.
He had always been aware of how hurt she felt whenever their parents insulted her or said hurtful words.
And as he grew older, he made up his mind to protect his sister from everyone especially their parents.
“If that’s what you want, I’ll support you wholeheartedly.”
Adrianna squealed in excitement as she heaved a sigh of relief. She wouldn’t know what to do if Adrian didn’t support her.
After all, he had been the only person by her side.
