Chapter Fourteen To Begin Again Five weeks after Dalton left, Jack came home. He’d been shot in the leg and shoulder, shrapnel going into his skull, though, thank the lord, there was minimal damage in the head wound. By the time he crossed the threshold of Rose’s house, most of the bandages were gone and there was just a small scar above his temple. He walked with a limp, arriving with a crutch that he threw away as soon as he got home, even though he probably should have kept it for a while. The deepest physical wound was in his shoulder and his arm was safely tucked into a sling. “Well, they say I’m not going to be pitching softball much,” he laughed as he greeted his mom and me in the kitchen of the stone house.
