Chapter 1 - A Second Life
A blinding light pierced through Hiro’s closed eyes, jolting him awake. He found himself lying on a patch of soft grass, surrounded by towering trees that seemed to whisper in a language he didn’t understand. The air smelled different—fresh, earthy, almost mystical. Confusion and a twinge of fear crept over him as he sat up, trying to remember what had happened.
The last thing he could recall was rushing into the street, heart pounding as he pushed someone out of the way of an oncoming truck. Everything after that was a blur—a flash of pain, then darkness. And now... this. Wherever he was, it definitely wasn’t the city he knew.
He slowly stood, brushing the dirt from his clothes, and realized he was no longer wearing his office attire. Instead, he was dressed in light, medieval-looking armor, with a sword strapped to his side. The weapon felt foreign yet strangely natural against his hip, like it was made for him. Hiro gripped the hilt, marveling at the craftsmanship. The blade gleamed under the sunlight that filtered through the canopy above, and the insignia on the guard was unlike anything he’d ever seen.
"Where... am I?" he murmured, his voice sounding strangely loud in the quiet of the forest.
A rustle nearby snapped his attention back, and he spun, instincts kicking in. Out from behind a tree stepped a young woman, her eyes as sharp as the dagger she held pointed at him. She looked him up and down, a mix of suspicion and curiosity in her gaze. Her clothes were simple, but the way she moved told him she was no stranger to combat.
"Who are you?" she asked, not lowering the dagger. "And why are you dressed like one of the kingdom's knights?"
Hiro hesitated, unsure how to respond. “I… I’m not sure,” he admitted, realizing how strange it sounded. "I don’t know where I am or how I got here."
The woman studied him for a moment before sighing. “You’re not from around here, are you? Fine. Follow me.” Without another word, she turned and started walking away, clearly expecting him to follow.
Hiro hesitated but decided he didn’t have much choice. He hurried after her, keeping his hand near his sword, just in case. His mind raced with questions: What was this place? How had he gotten here? And more importantly—why?
As they walked, the woman finally introduced herself. “Name’s Elara,” she said over her shoulder. “You’re in Eldoria, and I’d suggest you be careful who you trust around here.”
"Eldoria?" The name felt oddly familiar, like something out of a storybook, yet he’d never heard it before. "Why should I trust you, then?" he asked, trying to mask his unease.
She gave a soft chuckle. “Good question. But I’m the only one here who hasn’t tried to kill you yet.”
Hiro couldn’t argue with that logic. They walked in silence until they reached a small village tucked between hills and forests. The villagers gave him wary looks, as though they could sense he didn’t belong. Elara led him to a small inn on the edge of the village and motioned for him to sit at a corner table.
Once they were seated, she finally relaxed, resting her dagger on the table. “You really don’t remember anything?”
Hiro shook his head. “Just… fragments. I remember being in another place, and then waking up here.”
Elara sighed, eyeing him thoughtfully. “I’ve heard of cases like yours before. Some say people like you are summoned here from other worlds. But whatever brought you here, things are only going to get more complicated.”
Hiro felt a chill as her words sank in. He glanced around, noting how the villagers seemed tense, as if living in a constant state of alert. “What’s going on here?”
“A lot,” she replied. “The kingdom is at war with dark forces that’ve been pushing closer every day. If you’ve got any fighting skills, you’ll need them soon. This world isn’t kind to newcomers.” She paused, sizing him up. “You might be able to help.”
"Help?" Hiro echoed, taken aback. He’d never considered himself a hero, but something about this world stirred a strange sense of purpose within him, like he was being called to action.
"Yes," she said, her voice softer. “We could use all the help we can get. But don't worry—you’ll have plenty of chances to prove yourself. Just be ready. Eldoria’s a dangerous place, and trust is rare.”
Hiro’s heart raced with a mix of fear and excitement. Somehow, he felt he was meant to be here, like this world held the answers he had always been searching for. As he looked around the inn, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a journey he hadn’t expected to take.
