The prince who woke up for love
The morning sun shone brightly over Sterling Palace, its golden rays reflecting off the white marble walls. Birds sang in the royal gardens as servants hurried through the halls, preparing for the biggest event of the year. Prince Lincoln Sterling was finally getting married. At twenty-eight, Lincoln was everything the kingdom admired. Tall, handsome, intelligent, and kind, he was the eldest son of King Richard and Queen Eleanor Sterling. Unlike many wealthy heirs, Lincoln treated everyone with respect, whether they were ministers or gardeners. In the palace courtyard, Lincoln adjusted the sleeves of his navy-blue suit while smiling at his younger brother. “You look nervous,” Damian teased. Lincoln laughed. “I am. Vanessa deserves a perfect wedding.” Damian forced a smile. “I’m happy for you, brother.” Lincoln pulled him into a hug. “You’ll find your own happiness one day.” Damian smiled, but inside, his heart ached. He had loved Vanessa Harrington for years. He knew it was wrong. She belonged to Lincoln. Inside the Harrington mansion, Vanessa stared at herself in the mirror. Her expensive white dress sparkled beneath the lights. Her mother smiled proudly. “You’ll become a princess tomorrow.” Vanessa sighed. “I know.” She loved the title more than the man. Still, Lincoln was handsome, rich, and destined to become king someday. Marrying him was the smartest decision. Outside the palace gates, reporters crowded together. “Cameras ready!” “The prince will be leaving for the rehearsal any minute!” Security opened the royal gates. Lincoln climbed into his black luxury car. “I’ll see everyone at the cathedral,” he told Damian. Damian nodded. “Drive safely.” Lincoln smiled. “I always do.” The car pulled away. None of them knew it would be the last time they saw him awake. ⸻ Rain began to fall without warning. The highway became slippery. Lincoln slowed the car. His phone buzzed. Vanessa Calling… He smiled and answered through the car speaker. “I’m almost there.” Vanessa laughed. “Don’t keep your bride waiting.” “I wouldn’t dare.” Suddenly— A truck sped through a red light. Lincoln’s eyes widened. “No…” The deafening crash echoed across the road. Metal twisted. Glass exploded. The black car spun several times before slamming into the highway barrier. Everything became still. ⸻ Hours later… Queen Eleanor rushed into the emergency room. “Where is my son?” A doctor removed his glasses. “Your Majesty…” She grabbed his arm. “Tell me!” “The prince suffered severe head injuries. We’ve stopped the internal bleeding, but…” “But what?” “He has fallen into a coma.” The queen staggered backward. “No…” King Richard caught her before she collapsed. The doctor lowered his head. “We don’t know when—or if—he’ll wake.” The words hit the royal family like thunder. ⸻ Three days later… Machines beeped steadily in Lincoln’s private hospital suite. His body lay motionless beneath crisp white sheets. Vanessa entered the room wearing designer sunglasses. She looked at him. There were bruises on his face. Bandages wrapped around his head. He didn’t move. Didn’t blink. Didn’t speak. The man who was supposed to become her husband looked like a stranger. She slowly sat beside him. “I… I don’t know if you can hear me.” Silence. “I never imagined this.” Still nothing. She sighed. “Everyone says I should stay.” She looked away. “But how long?” A month? A year? Forever? She stood. “I’m sorry, Lincoln.” Without touching his hand… Without saying goodbye… She walked out of the room. Outside the hospital, Damian waited. “How is he?” he asked quietly. Vanessa looked at the ground. “The doctors don’t think he’ll wake.” Damian didn’t answer. Vanessa wiped away a tear. “I can’t spend my whole life waiting.” Damian stared at her. She continued walking. He followed. Neither of them noticed Queen Eleanor standing at the end of the hallway. She had heard every word. Tears streamed down her face. “So this is what your promises were worth,” she whispered. ⸻ Six months passed. Then one year. Then two. Prince Lincoln never opened his eyes. The newspapers stopped printing updates. People slowly forgot their sleeping prince. But not everyone. Every morning, Queen Eleanor sat beside his bed. She held his hand. “You promised you’d dance with me at your coronation.” Her voice trembled. “I’m still waiting.” A nurse entered quietly. “Your Majesty…” “What is it?” “The caregiver we hired has resigned.” Queen Eleanor closed her eyes. “Again?” “She said she couldn’t handle caring for someone who may never wake.” The queen looked at her unconscious son. “I don’t need someone who believes he’s dying.” She stood. “I need someone who believes he can live.” The nurse hesitated. “There is one young woman who applied this morning.” Queen Eleanor turned. “Bring her to me.” ⸻ An hour later… The palace doors opened. A young woman stepped inside wearing a simple cream-colored dress. She carried an old handbag that had been carefully stitched back together. Her shoes were worn, but polished. Her curly black hair was neatly tied behind her head. She looked around the magnificent palace with quiet wonder. She had never seen such luxury. The butler approached. “Name?” She smiled politely. “Amara Daniels.” “Occupation?” “I’m a caregiver… and sometimes I work as a housemaid.” The butler nodded. “Follow me.” As Amara walked through the palace halls, she had no idea that one decision… One job… Would change her life forever. End of Chapter One Chapter Two: The Maid’s Promise begins with Amara meeting the sleeping prince for the first time.
