Sophia Carter is fighting to save her family’s historic bookstore, Carter’s Corner, the last connection to her late father’s legacy. But with mounting debts and a ruthless developer closing in, she’s running out of options.

Enter Damien Blackwood, a cold, calculating billionaire who always gets what he wants. When he offers to buy the bookstore, Sophia refuses—until a powerful rival threatens both her livelihood and Damien’s empire. To protect their interests, Damien proposes a marriage of convenience: one year as his wife, and he’ll save the bookstore.

Reluctantly, Sophia agrees, but their fake marriage quickly becomes complicated. Forced to live together, their initial hatred turns into fiery attraction. Damien, who’s always kept emotions at arm’s length, finds himself drawn to Sophia’s strength and passion. Sophia, meanwhile, begins to see the vulnerable man beneath Damien’s cold exterior.

But when Sophia uncovers a dark secret from Damien’s past, she feels betrayed and walks away. Damien, realizing he’s fallen for her, must now prove he’s changed. In a grand gesture, he saves the bookstore and gives it back to her—no strings attached.

Can Sophia trust the man who once saw love as a transaction? Or will their marriage of convenience become a vow of forever?

CHAPTER1
The bell above the door of Carter’s Corner jingled, and Sophia Carter looked up from the stack of books she was organizing. A man in a tailored suit stepped inside, his sharp blue eyes scanning the room like he owned it. “Can I help you?” Sophia asked, her voice steady despite the knot of anxiety forming in her stomach. “I’m here to see the owner,” the man said, his tone cool and commanding. “That’s me,” Sophia replied, crossing her arms. He extended a hand. “Damien Blackwood. I’m interested in purchasing this property.” Sophia’s smile faded. She’d heard the name before—Damien Blackwood, the billionaire real estate mogul who was buying up half the city. “I’m not selling,” she said, her voice firm. Damien raised an eyebrow. “I think you’ll find my offer more than generous.” “It’s not about the money,” Sophia shot back. This bookstore is my father’s legacy. It’s not for sale.” Damien studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. “Legacies don’t pay the bills, Ms. Carter. Think about it.” He handed her a business card and turned to leave, his polished shoes clicking against the wooden floor. Sophia watched him go, her heart pounding. She glanced at the card, then tossed it into the trash. Sophia turned back to the shelves, her hands trembling as she straightened a row of novels. She couldn’t shake the image of Damien’s piercing blue eyes or the way his voice had sent a chill down her spine. “Mommy, who was that man?” Sophia looked down to see her daughter, Emma, peeking out from behind a bookshelf. Her auburn curls were a mess, and her bright eyes were wide with curiosity. “Just someone who doesn’t understand how special this place is,” Sophia said, forcing a smile. She knelt down and brushed a strand of hair from Emma’s face. “Why don’t you go help Mr. Thompson in the children’s section? He’s setting up for storytime.” Emma nodded and skipped off, her laughter echoing through the store. Sophia watched her go, her heart aching. She couldn’t lose this place—not just for herself, but for Emma. The sound of the bell jingling again pulled her from her thoughts. She turned, expecting to see a customer, but instead, a man in a cheap suit walked in, holding an envelope. “Sophia Carter?” he asked, his tone flat. “Yes?” He handed her the envelope. “You’ve been served.” Sophia’s stomach dropped as she took the envelope. She didn’t need to open it to know what it was—another eviction notice. The developer had been harassing her for months, but this was the first time they’d taken legal action. She tore open the envelope and scanned the document, her heart sinking. They were giving her thirty days to vacate the property. Thirty days to say goodbye to everything her father had built. “Mommy?” Sophia looked up to see Emma standing in the doorway of the children’s section, her face pale. “Is everything okay?” Sophia forced a smile. “Everything’s fine, sweetheart. Why don’t you go help Mr. Thompson? I’ll be right there.” Emma hesitated, then nodded and disappeared into the next room. Sophia leaned against the counter, her mind racing. She couldn’t let this happen. She wouldn’t. That evening, Sophia sat at the kitchen table, staring at the eviction notice. Emma was asleep in the next room, and the house was quiet, but Sophia’s mind was anything but. Her phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen. It was her mother, Claire. “Hey, Mom,” Sophia said, trying to keep her voice steady. “How are you holding up?” Claire asked, her tone gentle. “I’m fine,” Sophia lied. “Just… tired.” “Sophia, I know you’re not fine. Talk to me.” Sophia sighed and rubbed her temples. “I got another eviction notice today. They’re giving me thirty days to vacate.” Claire was silent for a moment. “What are you going to do?” “I don’t know,” Sophia admitted. “I can’t lose this place, Mom. That's all I have left of Dad.” “I know, sweetheart,” Claire said softly. “But you can’t do this alone. Maybe it’s time to consider other options.” Sophia’s chest tightened. “You mean sell?” “I mean do whatever it takes to protect yourself and Emma,” Claire said. “Your father wouldn’t want you to lose everything fighting for a building.” Sophia swallowed the lump in her throat. “I’ll figure something out.” She hung up and stared at the eviction notice, her mind racing. She couldn’t sell. She wouldn’t. But what other options did she have? The next morning, Sophia arrived at the bookstore early, determined to come up with a plan. She was halfway through reorganizing the fiction section when the bell jingled again. She turned, expecting to see a customer, but instead, Damien Blackwood walked in. “Ms. Carter,” he said, his tone as cool as ever. “Have you thought about my offer?” Sophia crossed her arms. “I told you, I’m not selling.” Damien stepped closer, his gaze intense. “I’m not here to negotiate. I’m here to make you a better offer.” Sophia raised an eyebrow. “Oh?” “Marry me,” Damien said, his voice steady. Sophia stared at him, certain she’d misheard. “What?” “A marriage of convenience,” Damien explained. “One year as my wife, I'll use my resources to protect you and the bookstore. After that, we go our separate ways.” Sophia laughed incredulously. “You’re insane.” “Am I?” Damien stepped closer, his gaze piercing. “You’re out of options, Sophia. This is the only way to save what you love.” Sophia’s mind raced. She thought of Emma, of her father’s legacy, of everything she stood to lose. Finally, she took a deep breath. “Fine. But this is strictly business.” Damien nodded. “Strictly business.” Sophia’s phone buzzed again, pulling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the screen—a text from an unknown number: “You have no idea what you’re getting into.” Her heart skipped a beat. Was this a threat? A warning? She quickly typed back: “Who is this?” The response came almost immediately: “Someone who knows Damien Blackwood better than you do.” Sophia’s hands trembled as she stared at the screen. What had she just agreed to? The next morning, Sophia arrived at the bookstore early, determined to clear her head. She was halfway through reorganizing the fiction section when the bell jingled again. She turned, expecting to see a customer, but instead, Damien Blackwood walked in. “Ms. Carter,” he said, his tone as cool as ever. “We need to discuss the details of our arrangement.” Sophia crossed her arms. “I thought we already did.” Damien stepped closer, his gaze intense. “There’s more to it than you realize. Victor Kane isn’t just a rival—he’s dangerous. If he finds out about our deal, he’ll come after you.” Sophia’s stomach churned. “What are you saying?” “I’m saying you need to be careful,” Damien said, his voice low. “Victor doesn’t play fair, and he won’t hesitate to use you to get to me.” Sophia’s mind raced. She thought of Emma, of the bookstore, of the text she’d received last night. “What have I gotten myself into?” Damien’s expression softened, just for a moment. “You’ll be safe as long as you stick to the plan. But if you back out now, Victor will destroy you.” Sophia swallowed hard. “I’m not backing out.” Damien nodded. “Good. We’ll announce the engagement tomorrow. Be ready.” He turned to leave, but Sophia stopped him. “Wait.” Damien paused, looking back at her. “Why are you doing this?” Sophia asked. “Why me?” Damien’s gaze flickered, and for a moment, she thought she saw something vulnerable in his eyes. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared. “Because you’re the only one who can pull this off,” he said, his tone cold again. “Don’t make me regret it.”
