Chapter 04
Serena Martin
I was still a little dizzy when I got in the taxi. I didn't know what happened after my vision blurred and I blacked out. Maybe because of shock? When I woke up, I found myself in a bedroom. In my shock, I abruptly stood up and looked for the exit. I didn't care that I was breathless when I got on the elevator and outside the building.
I was even more shocked when I checked the balance on my account to see a whopping ten thousand dollars. To be sure, I even checked it a few more times, like a fool. Who knows if I was just hallucinating because I fainted? But those five zeros stared back at me every time I checked my balance.
So what happened wasn't a dream after all. I met that arrogant man named Liam. I went inside a prestigious hotel, and there really is a contract? What's worse is that I'm going to get married in four months?!
My God! What would my parents say? What if I tell them what happened? But I doubt they'll believe me. The truth is, my family is from the countryside, and I wanted to leave that place to try my luck here in New York. I experienced being a farmer before I came here to be a working student. My father sold some of our things just so I could stand here, so I didn't want to rely on them regarding my school and everyday needs.
And then this happened. I will make Winnie pay for this, I swear!
I called her a few times, but she wasn't answering. When I checked her on social media, I was surprised to see that she blocked me! So this was intentional? She fed me to the lion? But why? Why would she do this to me?
Does she have some sort of debt to that Liam guy, and she used me to pay for it? Ugh! This is frustrating!
When I reached the dorm, I almost tripped, running and climbing to reach our room. In my desperation, I only felt breathless when I reached our room.
"Winnie, where are you, you witch? What have you done to me?!" I shouted when I was almost by the door only to find that it was locked, but when I opened the door, there was no sign of her anywhere.
My eyes widened when I saw that her bed was empty, and I checked her closet to see that it was also empty!
"s**t!" I cursed in defeat. "Did she just run away?!"
I dialed her number again, my heart beating so loud and fast. So this was her plan? She set me up, and for what? For money?!
"Damn you, Winnie! Where could I find you, you b***h?"
In the end, I just got tired of calling her, and my phone almost died. I slumped on my bed in defeat, and I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry. I regret ever accepting the money from her. If I only knew that I would pay such a high price, I would have looked for extra work instead!
I stared at the ceiling, still in disbelief at what happened. I know that if I told the cops about this, they wouldn't believe me. Besides, that man's warning scared me. It looks like he won't hesitate to sue me if I escape from him.
I didn't even realize that I fell asleep until the sound of my alarm woke me up. I groaned when my head ached and looked at my phone for the time. It's morning already?
I wasn't even aware I fell asleep because I spent the night rolling on my bed while thinking. My body doesn't feel like moving, but I can't miss a single day because I'm graduating soon.
'It's okay, Serena; four months are still far away. A lot of things could happen.' I convinced myself to somehow lift my mood and take a shower.
I ate a piece of bread and a cup of instant coffee because I was running late. I just bought something to eat while walking my way to school. It's a ten-minute walk after all.
"Serena!"
I whipped my head and saw a group of students wearing the same uniform as me. I beamed and jogged my way to my classmates and friends. As I neared them, however, I remembered Winnie and looked around for the evil witch.
"Good morning!" I greeted them with a smile, despite the predicament I was in.
"So let us guess, you heard it as well? What am I saying? Of course, you'll be the first to know," Whimper told me when I sat beside her.
"About what?" I asked in bewilderment.
"About Winnie, she sent a message to all of us that she won't be able to finish this school year because she and her family will migrate to Canada, and she'll finish her studies there," Jordan sadly told me.
I gritted my teeth, and my insides twisted in anger. So she really did it? After practically pimping me to that Liam, she just left me? The audacity!
I realized I hadn't answered, so everyone was just looking at me. "Yes, she left yesterday, and she told me about it." I lied and acted as if I were sad about it.
I don't want to let them know what happened because I don't want anyone to know what's happening in my life right now. I don't want everyone to gossip about me.
"That's sad. I'll miss Winnie," Daisy said, and I secretly scoffed.
I cannot blame them because Winnie is the most cheerful and talkative of all of us. If only she didn't do this to me, I would miss her as well.
"Where are you going?" Sara asked me when I stood up.
"I will go inside. I want to review some topics." I just told her and left.
With Winnie's absence, they will surely talk about her, and I don't want to ruin my morning because of her. I might even lose my concentration, and I can't afford that.
I was silent the whole day, and I intentionally avoided my friends. I got annoyed because they kept asking me about Winnie being her roommate and all that. I told them I wasn't feeling well because of my period and ate outside the school.
I remember the man's name, so I searched for his name on the internet while I was on a break. I was mildly surprised to see so many pictures and articles about him. My heart thumped in excitement as I read his information.
He's turning thirty this year, and I was right about his height being six feet and above. Like Nath said, he's the only heir of a multi-billionaire company, and his parents live outside the country. He loves scuba diving and horseback riding, but aside from that, there isn't much information about his life. Aside from something that caught my attention, He was a married man, and he's now divorced.
Divorced? Who was he married to? I'm sure they are from an elite family or even artists. I searched for the name of his ex-wife but found none, leaving me feeling annoyed and frustrated.
"These reporters can't do their job right," I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
But then maybe it was removed? Maybe he used his so-called influence to delete it so he could avoid a scandal. Maybe his wife left him because of his terrible attitude! Hah!
'And you'll be next, Serena. Good luck! '
I will make sure that after we get married, I will make him regret his decision, and I will make his life miserable. That way, he would regret buying me to be his wife, and he would be the one to end the contract. I would do anything just so he would hate me. Let's see how long he can tolerate me.
I grinned at my own brilliant idea, and I must look like a villain in other people's eyes. A villain, or just a plain crazy woman, that is.
When my alarm sounded, signaling that the break was almost over, I closed the tabs and stood up. I always set an alarm so I wouldn't be late for my next class. After my class that day, I will go straight to my dorm to rest.
Why would I still work today when I have ten thousand dollars in my account?
