Chapter One: Nightmare
Rosie stared at her mom in alarm as she lay sprawled on the floor. She had come back from her shift. Rushing to her mom, she bent over and held her head softly, repeatedly calling her name. The only response she got was a sad smile she gave her. She seems so weak.
She glanced around to check if Mom had ingested anything but saw nothing in sight.
Rosie’s hands were trembling badly as unwanted thoughts filled her head about what she would do if she lost her mom. She got to action by taking her mom outside. “Mom you can't die”, why now? She quickly hailed a taxi that took them to the hospital. Arriving at the hospital’s entrance, she screamed “Help my mom.”
The doctors and nurses swiftly took action. Placing her on a stretcher, she was rushed to the emergency unit to save her life. All Rosie could hear was blurs of noise as everything around her seemed to spin and fade out. One of the nurses saw her still standing in shock. She led Rosie to sit down. Hours later, the doctor summoned her to his office and offered her a seat.
“We ran a few tests on your mom. Do you know what must have happened to your mom?”
Taking a deep breath, Rosie replied “I have no idea. What happened to her doctor, she asked. Unable to hold in her tears. Mom is the only family I have. If I lose her, I don't know what I will do.”
He paused, looking at Rosie unsure, “I'm afraid to say this but there were traces of poison in her system and it has been going on for a long time. Are you sure you don't know who is responsible for this?”
Time stopped as Rosie stared at the doctor dumbfounded. Shaking her head in denial, “No, no, no. “This can't be possible.”
Maybe the signs have always been there but they both ignored. Recently, her mom had fevers and treated it. Then it came again and she seemed pale as the days went by, but nothing could have prepared her for this.
“What are you saying, doctor? She demanded. You mean to tell me someone has been poisoning my mom right under my nose and this is how I find out?” she asked exasperated.
The doctor rubbed his hand on his temple like he hadn’t gotten all day to explain. “Miss Rosie. I'm sorry but according to the test result, the poison In her system is enough to kill three people. The poison was introduced into her system slowly over time. It took a while before it could be discovered and I have never encountered its type before.”
Leaning forward the doctor continued, “Now the solution is for her to undergo immediate surgery and we need to be quick about it but first we have to run various tests to know how to tackle this. I’m afraid it’s rather a difficult case.”
Rosie nodded slowly while waiting for the doctor to continue. She couldn’t wrap her head around about her mom’s situation.
Meeting her gaze he said, “You need to make a full deposit then we can schedule your mom's surgery. For now, only tests will be carried out and she needs to rest because she's weak.”
Her voice laced with dread as she held her breath. She asked, “How much for the deposit?”
The doctor proceeds to call an amount of money that Rosie has never seen in her entire life. She could hear her heartbeat drumming in her ears. A lot of conflicting thoughts passed through her as she tried to process the new information. The problem is how to get the money.
Putting up a half smile, she inquired, “ Can I pay by installment?”
The doctor looked away sighing as if bored, then glanced at her impassively “I don't think that’s possible. The hospital’s policy doesn't allow it.”
Her insides twisted with anxiety. Not knowing what else to do, Rosie fell on her knees pleading and crying “At least begin the treatment. I will make the full payment. Just give me a week.”
The doctor nodded, not knowing what else to do. It's one of the hardest tasks of being a doctor. Telling a family member to make a deposit, especially when it's hard for them. This is the least he can do.
“Alright miss. After a week from today, all treatment will cease if the full payment isn't made.”
Rosie thanked him hurriedly while wiping her tears and the snot as she stood up. Lots of thoughts ran through her head on who to call for financial assistance for her mom's treatment, but she had no one. She went back to check up on her mom. There she lay on the bed in peaceful slumber. So pale yet beautiful. “Don't worry Mom, I won't let anything happen to you,” She whispered while rubbing her mom’s hand. She sniffed back tears as she had no solution to this predicament. She texted her two best friends -Lucille and Dennis. Dennis was two years older than them while Rosie and Lucille are the same age.
Rosie rushed back to the Whitson manor where she and her mom worked and slept. She walked up the stairs that led to the dining room knowing fully well her aunt would be there. She mustered up courage and knocked twice before letting herself in. Weirdly enough, the whole family was present.
Heather Whitson looked at her with an evil glint and a knowing look in her eyes. Rosie knows Heather doesn't like either her or her mom. Rosie calls her aunt because her husband provided shelter when Rosie’s mom- Evelyn had no roof under her head. The husband, Jeffrey Whitsons, cleared his throat while looking at Rosie waiting for her to say something.
Biting the inside of her cheek while twiddling her fingers, she pleaded “Please help my mom, eyes brimming with tears as their gaze focused on her.
“And why should we help you," Heather hissed with annoyance.
Rosie knows they won’t help her no matter how desperate she begs but then again what else can she do?
“What exactly is happening to Evelyn?” Jeffrey asked.
“The doctor said she has been poisoned and if she's not operated on, she will lose her life.”
Casually flipping through the newspapers, “I see. Are you willing to do what it takes to help your mom?”
Rosie was perplexed by the question but she nodded.
From the corner of her eyes, she glimpsed at Olivia Whitson, who kept looking at her with amusement in her eyes. When their gazes locked, Olivia burst into laughter.
Rosie was dumbfounded by her behavior. What could be funny in her situation? Rosie thought angrily to herself.
Heather sat upright in her seat, “You want to save your mom, here's what you need to do.”
