Chapter Four

1626 Words
Joel and Maribel were kissing and laughing at the back.  Camilo and I were listening to Daddy Yankee.  We were riding a bumpy road.  I noticed the car trembling a bit by both.  Nearby another group of high schoolers drove next to us in a red Toyota Yaris.  We already knew who they were, Mario, Frankie, Shaelys and Tatiana, they too went to our school.  Frankie and Shaelys were on the front, Mario and Tatiana at the back.  Frankie and Mario both had short trim black hair with tortilla-colored skin and Shaelys had dyied her hair blond and pink. Tatiana was black and had short dreadlocks.    Frankie made a slight nod his chin aimed at us.  I didn't get along with any of them and one time Frankie wanted to f**k me because he said he was better at it than Camilo.  Camilo already didn't like him and if I told him that story, he'd probably kill Mario, so he didn't know.  Camilo turned the music down. "Hey, what's up?" Frankie asked. "Nothin'" Camilo answered.  I stared at Shaelys wishing her the worst. She was probably thinking the same thing.  I hoped my wish was granted first though.   "Where are you going?  This isn't the way to the mall," Mario said. "Just hanging out," Camilo said. "f**k them, let's go," I whispered into Camilo's ear, but he waved me away. "Hey Karina," Mario said.  I waved at him and then ignored him.  He laughed.  Then Frankie began to hit the accelerator.  "What the f**k?' I said.  Camilo began to do the same.   "Oh, s**t no," I said.  Maribel wasn't laughing at the back anymore.  Joel was clueless but didn't say anything to embarrass us.   "Shut up, put your seatbelt on," Camilo said. "This is stupid," Maribel complained.  We put our seatbelts on because we already knew what was coming. "Camilo remember what your mom said.  This car isn't..." I shut up when I saw Mario laughing at the back.  I frowned at him. "Kick his ass," I said changing my mind.   "We're going to race?  I thought we were going to the Maribel?" Joel said. "Just put your f*****g seatbelt on," Camilo said. "Check the cops," I told Maribel.  We had to make sure that there were no cops around or we could all be into some serious trouble.  "s**t," Maribel complained.  We all looked at our surroundings, just like the high schoolers in the other car.   "Are we going to do this or are you going to back down?" Frankie asked. "Ah, we going to do this," Camilo replied.  "Go!" Mario screamed at the back and the car accelerated.  Frankie did the same complaining. "Cabron, he cheated," Camilo said. "I told you he was an asshole," I said. "Just sit back," Camilo said and I did. We all did. The car went faster, but we were still only trailing a few inches away from Frankie's car.  Then Frankie made a cut because there was a car upfront, he almost crashed, but that made Camilo and him now riding the car together.  Camilo smiled.  Frankie was not that amused.  Suddenly a car turned from an intersection in front of us.  Camilo hit the breaks hard and Frankie's car moved on.  Camilo didn't crash the car, it was only inches away from the one in front.  I was so scared I hit Camilo on the shoulder.  Camilo turned the car off and got out of the car.  Unexpectedly, he started to laugh and then we all laughed.  We were trying to shrug away the fear.  "f**k them.  Let's go," Camilo said. "Yeah," I replied.   "Who were those assholes?" Joel asked.  "Just some guys, don't worry about them," Maribel told him and I couldn't help notice that Joel was looking at me in that way again, that inviting way that said, come with me, let's have fun.  I felt a little sorry for Maribel but didn't say a thing.  I got in next to Camilo.  The music was back up and we were chillin' again, going to the marina.  We reached it about twenty minutes later.  I liked looking at the big and small yachts.  Some of them were anchored on docks and others were up at the storage.  Camilo turned off the music and the car.  I could smell the nasty smell of the mixture of the dead, contaminated water by the motor of the boats. "We're here," Camilo said. "No s**t," said Joel.  I looked at Camilo and laughed. "Finally, a smile," Joel said to me.  Maribel hit Joel softly on the shoulder. "What?" I heard him whisper at her.  Then he kissed her on the chin and she forgot about the incident.  His eyes tilted toward me.  I wasn't sure if he winked at me or not so I closed the door and followed Camilo.  I grabbed his hand to make it clear that I was Camilo's girl.  We walked towards the marina and noticed that there weren't many people until we reached the guardhouse.  The security guard came out of the little house with a writing pad.  Camilo spoke up while the rest of us remained quiet. "Who are you?" The security guard asked. "I'm Tito's nephew.  I came to visit him," Camilo said.  The security guard peered at Camilo and then he looked at me. "And them?" He asked. "My friends.  I just came to see my uncle," Camilo replied. "You can come in, but not the rest of them," the security guard said. Camilo was annoyed and I could tell because his nostrils flared.  I decided to do something.  I walked near the security guard and smiled devilishly at him. "Please let me in.  It's my birthday," I said.  He looked at my eyes, swallowed hard, and then nodded. "Okay, you can enter with him, the rest have to stay here," the security guard said. "s**t," Maribel whispered at Joel. "Why can't we go in?  We won't do anything," Joel said to the guard. "You're lucky I don't throw you kids out.  It's what I should do," The guard said.  Camilo shushed them. "Okay, look. They won't make any problems," Camilo said. "What are we supposed to do here Camilo?  We'll be bored," Maribel complained. "Here," Camilo said giving the car keys to Joel. "Go fill it up with gas and get some smokes," Camilo said to Joel. "And corn nuts," said Maribel.  Joel kissed her in the lips. "Of course sweetie," Joel said.  They both left content.   "Okay, go in," said the security guard.  We both walked into the marina.  Camilo grabbed my hand. "Is that what you do when you want something?" Camilo asked me.  I half smiled. "I didn't know it was going to work," I replied.  Camilo puffed. "Yeah right.  I wonder if you did that with Mr. Lorenzo for the history class.  I know you don't know s**t about the history and got a C+," Camilo said. "What did you get?" I asked him. "An F.  Why do you think I had to take summer?"  Camilo said. "God, you're dumb," I said and laughed.  Camilo wasn't amused, but he didn't say anything.  We reached the marina office and the security guard there stood up from his chair and hugged Camilo.  The security guard was a cocoa color, just like Camilo and his hair was super short and clean.  He then looked at me. "Wow, this is your girl?" He asked. "Yes Tio.  She's Karina," Camilo said. "Tito," the security guard replied.  Then he put his hand in his pocket and handed the keys to Camilo. "You sure you can navigate that thing?" Tito asked.  Camilo nodded. "If it's like a jet ski, I'll have no problems," Camilo said. "Okay.  I'll distract the security guard over there while you take it out.  Remember to take it out of the harbor like I told you.  If anybody finds out it's my ass and if I get fired, you're going to have to pay for my checks, understand?" Tito said.  Camilo nodded. "Yeah, I understand tio," Camilo said. "You better.  Nice to meet you, Karina," Tito said and then he smiled at me.  I ignored his smile and left with Camilo.  "This is going to be great, you and I, in this boat, chillin'.  Too bad I didn't tell you to get a bathing suit, but hey, we can swim in our natural bathing suits, huh?" Camilo said. "I don't know how to swim," I replied.  Camilo was surprised at my response.  "That's bullshit," he said.  I laughed and nodded. "It's true.  I don't know how to swim," I replied.   "Whatever.  Maybe we can use a life jacket then.  I'll be satisfied with nude bottoms," he said. "Shut up.  It's not going to happen," I replied.  I didn't know that would annoy him, but it did.  As we reached the boat he complained. "What bullshit," he mumbled.  I heard him, but decided not to argue.  I was too happy with the boat anyway. "I'll help you," I said going to one of the ropes. "No.  Get in the boat.  This has to be discreet," he said. "Okay," I replied and got in the boat.  Camilo dealt with the ropes and then he came in. "Store them," He said to me and I nodded and did it.  I placed them inside the box which was also used as a seat.  Camilo went to the front of the cockpit and turned the engine on.  I looked out, below the yacht to see the small waves and bubbles that formed on the water when the boat moved.  I loved the sea.  My mother was in the sea and I couldn't wait to be near her.  Finally, I was going to live an adventure!
