The forest
The sun dipped low, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Daniel took a deep breath, savoring the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers that lined the road. The quiet hum of his engine was the only company he had as he drove along the rural backroads.
A sudden clunk echoed through the car, and the engine sputtered to a halt. Daniel's eyes widened as the dashboard lights flickered erratically. He pulled over, the car jolting to a stop beside a towering grove of trees. The quiet grew thicker as the engine's final breaths faded away.
He stepped out into the cool evening air, his heart thudding in his chest. The sun was a sliver of light, a stark contrast to the darkening forest that loomed before him. He tried the ignition again, but the car remained lifeless. Panic began to creep in as he realized he had no phone signal. The isolation was palpable.
With no other option, Daniel grabbed a torch from the glove box and set out into the woods, hoping to find help or a place to call for aid. The tall trees stretched high above, their branches tangling to form a canopy that blocked the last of the daylight. The forest floor was a mottled mess of shadows and the occasional dappling of light that pierced through the leaves. His breathing grew ragged as he walked, the silence punctuated by the snaps of twigs beneath his boots. The air grew colder, and he shivered, pulling his jacket tighter around him. The woods grew denser, the path he followed becoming more obscured with each and every step. The sound of his footsteps echoed eerily, bouncing off the trunks of trees that stood like sentinels against the dark, foreboding, night sky.
He had set out almost six hours ago on his journey across the wild wilderness of this beautiful but desolate country, hoping to reach the next town on his epic adventure that started almost three months ago in Argentina. He had planned a year of self-discovery after losing Ellie, but he hadn't counted on walking through this unfamiliar forest, alone, with zero signal and no one to come looking for him. After all, who had he got now?
"f*****g car" Daniel muttered, his breath hanging in the cold forest air. He had hoped to be sat at a hotel bar now, sipping the local beer and taking in the sights and sounds of this remarkable country. Instead, he was walking aimlessly through the darkness.
He wondered what creatures called this place home. He knew predators were commonplace here. This wasn't England after all. Then it came, a chilling howl that resonated through the forest, sending shivers down his spine. A wolf. Daniel had read about them in his travel guide, but the reality was far more terrifying than the pages of ink and paper. He quickened his pace, his heart racing faster than the rabbit he had seen darting through the underbrush moments before. A clearing appeared like a beacon of hope ahead, the trees parting to reveal a small patch of moonlit grass. He sprinted towards it, the wolf's howls growing closer, more insistent. His lungs burned, and his legs screamed for rest, but fear was a potent motivator. He stumbled out of the trees, his chest heaving, as he looked around wildly for a place to hide and hoped the beast wasn't looking for him.
But there was nothing but open space and the endless wall of the forest at his back. The moon cast a silver glow, illuminating the clearing, and Daniel realized his mistake too late. He was out in the open, a perfect target for whatever predators lurked nearby. The hair on his neck stood on end, and the howling grew into a crescendo that seemed to surround him.
In a burst of adrenaline, he sprinted to the center of the clearing, dropping to the ground and rolling. The fabric of his jacket snagged on a protruding rock, tearing a gash along his side, but he ignored the pain. He had to keep moving, had to find cover before it was too late.
The wolf's howl was now a snarl, closer, much closer. Daniel could feel the vibrations of its steps through the ground. He pushed himself up, stumbling over his own feet, and continued his desperate flight. The edge of the clearing grew closer, the shadows of the trees beckoning like a sanctuary.
It was all in vain...
The moment Daniel reached the edge of the clearing, the wolf emerged from the shadows. Its eyes, two yellow embers in the night, locked onto him. It was massive, its fur a mix of black and grey, with muscles rippling underneath like a river of steel. The creature's snarl grew into a full-throated roar, and Daniel felt the vibrations of its fury in his very bones.
He stumbled back, tripping over a root and falling hard. The torch flew from his hand, rolling away to cast an erratic, flickering glow. The wolf pounced, its powerful legs launching it through the air. Daniel screamed, throwing up his arms in a feeble attempt to protect himself.
The impact sent him sprawling, the wind knocked out of him as the creature's weight slammed into his chest. The wolf's jaws snapped closed around his arm, piercing through the fabric of his jacket and into his flesh. He screamed again, a sound that was quickly muffled by the creature's fur as it pinned him to the ground.
The world narrowed to the pressure of the wolf's teeth and the taste of coppery fear in his mouth. Daniel's thoughts raced as he struggled, his mind frantically searching for a way out of this nightmare. His eyes met the animal's, and for a brief moment, he saw a flicker of something...human?
But it was gone as quickly as it had come.
