The trucks headed back to Glasgow, retracing the route Kate and McEwan had taken on the way up. When they reached the foot of Loch Lomond the trucks took the road through Balmaha and headed out on the Drymen road to approach Glasgow from the direction of Bearsden and Milngavie. McEwan caught a brief glimpse of a sign pointing towards an army base; faded and rusted, it was barely legible. They turned onto a road in a terrible state of repair. McEwan feared for his suspension as the car hit several potholes, their depth disguised by the water filling them. Five minutes later they passed through a thin, rectangular wood of pine trees.
