I thank the doctor and walk towards my mothers room. Every step, my heart breaks into little pieces.
My mother was all I had, I am only 21 years old. I have lost my brother and father due to a car accident 4 years ago. I remember my brother Roman, he was 13 years old at the time, he was tall enough to be confused with a high school senior. I chuckled remembering all the times he would try and sneak into the varsity football tryouts.
My father was a professor at the same university I go to, he taught English 101, 107 and 202. He was a serious man, tall and madly in love with my Mother. The school offered a scholarship to me after he passed and paid for his funeral expenses. My mother felt it important I return the favor by attending and doing well.
“I wish you both were still here” I sighed and entered my Mother’s room.
She was hooked up to at least 4 machines. She looked uncomfortable being in that bed. I wanted to run and hug her.
“Rose bud, is that you” my mothers famous nickname.
I chuckle internally “yes mom, I was just out speaking with Doctor Williams”
She sighs and smiled weakly at me “I’m so tired Rose”
I stepped towards her and the air becomes so thin, I can stop the tears from rolling down my face and onto her thin hospital blanket. I stare at the room I have come to known as my second home. I see the heartfelt notes left by the nurses, and I see my moms diary at her bedside.
I lay my hand on my moms chest, and count her breathes “1..2..3..4” I get lost in my counts I didn’t even realize a stranger standing at the door of her room.
I hesitate to ask who they were fearing it may have been a hospital admin asking to start making arrangements for her.
“Hello, did Doctor Williams send you?” I ask weakly.
The man doesn’t speak, his hazel eyes cut through me like a knife, he is tall almost having to duck under the door frame. His skin is pale, but I can almost feel the heat off his body as he comes to stand next to me.
“Hello sir, Did Doctor Williams send you? We can make arrangements for my Mother at another time, I just”
I blink, tears still steaming- then I realize he is gone. I start breathing heavy wondering if I’m hallucinating. “Am I going crazy?”
I give my mother a kiss and I hurry out the door to get some air
