THE GIRL IN THE FAMILY PHOTO
THE GIRL IN THE FAMILY PHOTO The first time I saw the girl in the photograph, I thought I was looking at myself. She had my eyes. My nose. Even the tiny scar above her left eyebrow was exactly where mine was. But there was one problem. I had never seen her before. I found the photograph on a rainy Saturday afternoon while cleaning my grandmother’s old room. It was hidden inside a dusty wooden box beneath a pile of letters. I picked it up and stared at it. There were four people in the picture. My grandmother. My mother. A man I didn't recognize. And the girl. She stood between my mother and the strange man, smiling at the camera. I turned the photograph over. Written on the back were four words: “Summer, 2009. Our family.” My heart started beating faster. I was born in 2010. So who was she? I ran downstairs with the photograph. “Mum!” She looked up from the kitchen. The moment she saw what I was holding, the colour disappeared from her face. “Where did you find that?” “In Grandma’s room. Who is she?” My mother didn't answer. “Mum?” She walked toward me and took the photograph from my hand. Then she whispered: “You were never supposed to find this.” I stared at her. “What does that mean?” She looked at me with tears in her eyes. Then she said something that changed everything. “That girl was your twin sister.” I couldn't breathe. “My... what?” “Her name was Amara.” “Where is she?” My mother closed her eyes. “She died before you were born.” I looked back at the photograph. Something didn't feel right. The girl looked exactly like me. But then I noticed something I'd missed before. On the girl's wrist was a small bracelet. A bracelet I had been wearing since I was a baby. I slowly looked down at my own wrist. The bracelet was there. My mother saw it. Her face changed. And suddenly, she wasn't crying anymore. She was afraid. Very afraid. That night, while my mother slept, I returned to Grandma's room. I searched through the wooden box again. Behind the photographs, I found a folded hospital document. My hands shook as I opened it. The date was the day I was born. There were two names written on the page. AMARA. And mine. Both marked as female. Both born at 11:43 p.m. I read the final line. “Infants transferred to separate guardians.” Separate guardians? I heard footsteps behind me. I turned. My grandmother was standing in the doorway. She looked at the document. Then at me. “I wondered when you would discover the truth.” “What truth?” She slowly walked into the room. “Your sister didn't die.” My heart stopped. “Then where is she?” Grandma looked directly into my eyes. “She has been living with another family for sixteen years.” I couldn't speak. “Why?” “Because someone wanted one of you to disappear.” “Who?” Grandma's expression hardened. “Your mother.” I stared at her in disbelief. Then a voice came from behind me. “I was trying to protect you.” My mother stood in the doorway. She was crying. But this time, I didn't know whether to believe her. She stepped forward and held out her phone. On the screen was a recent photograph. My heart dropped. It was the girl from the photograph. Older now. Sixteen years old. Standing outside a school. Alive. My mother whispered: “Her name is Amara.” I stared at the screen. Then my phone suddenly buzzed. Unknown number. One message. “Hi, sister.” I looked at my mother. She went completely still. Then another message appeared. “I know what Mum did.” I looked back at the screen. And for the first time in my life, I realized the girl in the photograph wasn't the mystery. The real mystery was why my mother had spent sixteen years making sure we never found each other.
