The Interview That Changes Everything
CHAPTER 1 Adenike Balogun had faced many things in life—late-night hunger, unpaid bills, an African mother’s look of disappointment—but nothing terrified her like her landlord’s footsteps. “Balogun! Rent o! I’m coming back this evening!” he shouted from the corridor like a town crier with personal beef. Adenike pressed a hand to her forehead. Her bank app showed ₦4,200. Money that could only buy transport or suffering—not rent. So when her best friend Jemima sent her a link for a high-paying nanny job, Adenike didn’t even think twice. Now she stood in front of a Lekki mansion so big it looked like it charged gate fee. The guard checked her name and opened the gate with respect she knew she didn’t deserve yet. Inside, everything was polished, cold, expensive, and intimidating—especially the man waiting in the center of the living room. Chinedu Bakari. The billionaire tech CEO whose name was whispered by men in boardrooms and screamed by women on social media. Tall. Broad. Dark-skinned with a face carved too perfectly for someone who didn’t act friendly. His eyes landed on her. “You’re five minutes late.” His voice had no warmth, no welcome—just facts. “I’m so sorry sir, the traffic…” “No excuses.” Adenike swallowed. Before she could gather herself, a little girl peeked out from behind him. Tiny. Curly hair. Big curious eyes holding a sadness no child should ever know. Zara. Adenike smiled gently. “Hello, angel.” Zara stared at her for a long moment without blinking. “She doesn’t interact with strangers,” Chinedu said. “That’s alright,” Adenike whispered. “I can wait until she decides I’m not a stranger anymore.” A flicker crossed Chinedu’s eyes. Surprise. Just a tiny bit. He led her into his office. She sat. He didn’t. “My household is quiet. Organized. Disciplined. If you can’t handle pressure or silence, this won’t work.” Adenike lifted her chin. “Sir… children are never quiet. And they shouldn’t be. If you want silence, hire a robot. If you want a child to heal—hire me.” Silence. A heavy one. Then— Small footsteps. Zara entered, walked straight to Adenike, and gently placed her small hand on Adenike’s knee. Chinedu’s eyes widened. “She hasn’t touched anyone since… the incident.” Adenike covered Zara’s hand with her own. “Hi baby. I’m here.” Zara leaned against her. Chinedu inhaled shakily. “You’re hired.” And at that moment, Adenike knew—her life had just begun a dangerous, beautiful shift. CHAPTER 2 Adenike arrived the next morning with her entire life packed into one faded suitcase and one handbag that had offended God with how much it carried. The maid opened the door. “Good morning, madam. Mr. Bakari is in the dining room.” Adenike stepped inside. Again, everything looked expensive and emotionless. Like the house was grieving too. Then she saw Zara—sitting at the dining table, feet not touching the ground, stuffing a pancake into her mouth with both hands. Adenike smiled. “Morning, princess.” Zara froze… then slowly smiled back. A small smile. A shy one. But a smile. Chinedu looked up sharply from his laptop—surprised. “You got her to smile,” he said quietly. Adenike shrugged lightly. “Children smile when they feel safe.” Something flickered in his eyes again. Guilt? Pain? Longing? He closed his laptop. “I’ll show you your room.” As they walked, Adenike noticed he never walked beside people—always ahead, like a man escaping his own thoughts. The guest room he showed her was huge, neat, and smelled like eucalyptus and loneliness. “I hope this is alright,” he said. “It’s beautiful,” she replied. He paused. “You’ll take care of Zara’s meals, school runs, nap time, and emotional regulation.” Adenike blinked. “Emotional what?” “I read it in a parenting book.” She smiled. “Sir… she’s a child. She needs love, not terminologies.” His jaw tightened, like she was saying something he didn’t want to hear. Later that afternoon, when Adenike took Zara to the backyard, she discovered the girl loved flowers. She plucked a tiny hibiscus and tucked it into Adenike’s hair. Adenike gasped softly. “Thank you, sweetheart.” From the veranda, Chinedu stood watching them, expression unreadable. But for a moment—just a second—he looked less like a billionaire… and more like a man remembering what gentleness looked like. CHAPTER 3 Adenike didn’t expect Chinedu to show up in the kitchen that evening. She was cutting fruit for Zara when she felt his presence. He didn’t walk softly. He walked like a man who controlled space. He leaned against the counter. Silent. Dark. Intense. “You sing to her,” he said. Adenike paused. “Yes. She likes it. It calms her.” “I heard.” His voice lowered. “She hasn’t slept peacefully in months.” Adenike softened. “Trauma does that. Children don’t know how to heal, so they hide.” Chinedu’s jaw clenched. “And adults?” he asked quietly. “Adults pretend they’re fine,” she replied, without thinking. His eyes locked with hers. A long, deep gaze that made heat crawl up her neck. He broke the moment first. “She likes you.” “I like her too,” Adenike whispered. “And she trusts you.” “That’s a gift. I won’t break it.” He nodded once. Stiff. Grateful. Vulnerable in a way she hadn’t seen before. Then— A soft sound. Zara had walked in and wrapped her tiny arms around Adenike’s leg. Chinedu’s eyes dimmed with emotion. Adenike lifted the little girl and kissed her cheek. Zara buried her face in Adenike’s neck. Chinedu watched them with something that looked suspiciously like longing. Or maybe loneliness. Maybe both. CHAPTER 4 The next evening, Chinedu shocked her. “Eat with us,” he said. Adenike blinked. “Sir? I thought staff don’t—” “I know what I said.” He paused. “But Zara wants you close.” So Adenike sat beside Zara. Chinedu sat across from her. The air felt warm. Too warm. Her skin buzzed under his gaze. Zara giggled—actually giggled—when Adenike made a funny face. Chinedu watched them with a mix of awe and confusion. Halfway through the meal, Zara reached over and placed a piece of chicken on Adenike’s plate. Chinedu’s fork froze mid-air. “She has never shared her food before,” he said softly. Adenike smiled. “I’m honored.” Chinedu cleared his throat. “You’re… good with her.” “Children respond to love,” she replied simply. He didn’t reply. He just looked at her—like she was something he didn’t know how to understand. When dinner ended and Adenike stood to clear the table, her hip brushed his arm lightly. Electric. Chinedu inhaled sharply but didn’t move. Her heart beat too fast. And his eyes… Held something new. Something dangerous. Something she shouldn’t want. CHAPTER 5 Midnight. Adenike heard soft crying from down the hall. She rushed to Zara’s room. The little girl sat up in bed shaking, tears streaming down her face. Nightmare. Adenike climbed into bed beside her, humming softly, stroking her back. “It’s alright, angel. You’re safe.” Slowly, Zara relaxed against her, tiny breaths evening out. Aidenike stayed until she fell asleep again. When she stood up, she found Chinedu in the doorway. He had been watching. Silent. Eyes full of ache. “You stayed with her,” he whispered. “Of course,” Adenike murmured. Most men looked strong on the outside. But Chinedu… He wore strength like armor. Tonight, she saw the cracks. “She misses her mother,” he said, voice breaking slightly. Adenike touched his arm gently. Just once. Warm. Soft. Human. He closed his eyes like the touch pulled something deep out of him. “You’re helping her heal,” he said quietly. “I… didn’t think anyone could.” Their eyes met in the dim hallway. Close. Too close. Breaths nearly touching. “Adenike…” he said her name like it meant something. “Yes, sir?” He exhaled. Long. Shaken. “Thank you.” For the first time… His voice held warmth. And that small warmth felt more dangerous than any coldness she had faced from him before.
