CHAPTER ONE: THE NIGHT HE LOOKED AT ME LIKE HE KNEW
The tray wasn’t supposed to shake. Ava tightened her grip, forcing her fingers to steady as she stepped out of the service corridor and into the glow of the restaurant. Tonight was different. She could feel it in the air thick, heavy, wrong. “VIP section,” her manager whispered sharply behind her. “Table twelve. Don’t make a mistake.” Ava nodded, even though her chest felt tight. She’d handled difficult tables before. Wealthy men with wandering hands, women with impossible standards, guests who thought money made them untouchable. She could handle this. She always did. Still, something about tonight made her skin prickle. The restaurant glittered golden chandeliers, polished marble floors, the soft hum of expensive conversations. Laughter floated through the air, light and careless, like nothing bad had ever touched anyone here. Ava adjusted her uniform slightly, lifting her chin as she approached the VIP section. Don’t overthink it. Just serve the wine and leave. Simple. Her heels clicked softly against the floor as she reached table twelve, eyes lowered respectfully. “Your wine, sir” And then Everything went wrong. Her fingers slipped. It wasn’t clumsiness. It wasn’t nerves. It was something else something sharp and sudden, like her body reacting before her mind could catch up. The glass tilted. Deep red wine spilled in a slow, horrifying arc… straight onto the man seated before her. A gasp caught in her throat. “Oh my God, I’m so” The words died instantly. Because he stood. Slowly. Deliberately. And the moment Ava looked up Her world stopped. No. Her breath hitched painfully. No… it can’t be Nathaniel Hale. Even after all these years, she knew that face. Sharper now. Colder. More dangerous. But the same eyes. Those dark, unreadable eyes that once looked at her like she was the only thing in the world Now looked at her like she was something he might destroy. The tray slipped from her hands, clattering faintly against the table as she staggered back a step. This isn’t real. This can’t be happening. She swallowed hard, forcing herself to breathe. “Sir, I’m so sorry,” she managed, her voice barely steady. “It was an accident. I’ll...” “Look at me.” The command was quiet. Not loud. Not harsh. But it froze her in place more effectively than a shout ever could. Ava’s heart slammed violently against her ribs. Run. That instinct screamed through her, loud and urgent. Run now. But her feet wouldn’t move. Slowly, too slowly, she lifted her gaze. And met his. Nathaniel was watching her. Not with surprise. Not with anger. But with something far worse. Recognition. Her stomach dropped. He knows. The realization hit her like a blow. He knows exactly who I am. Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. Around them, the restaurant continued as if nothing had happened but at this table, the world had narrowed to just the two of them. Ava forced herself to look away first, her pulse racing. Stay calm. Don’t react. Don’t let him see anything. “I’ll get something to clean that, sir,” she said quickly, reaching for a napkin with unsteady hands. Before she could move His fingers closed around her wrist. Firm. Unyielding. A sharp breath escaped her lips. The contact sent a jolt through her unexpected, unwelcome… familiar. “Where do you think you’re going?” His voice was low, controlled. Dangerous. Ava’s throat went dry. “I, I need to fix this” “Do you?” He tilted his head slightly, studying her face like he was peeling back layers, searching for something beneath the surface. Her heart pounded harder. Stop looking at me like that. Stop “Interesting,” he murmured. The word sent a chill down her spine. Ava tried to pull her hand back, but his grip tightened just enough to stop her. “Sir, please, people are watching,” she whispered urgently. That, finally, seemed to register. Nathaniel’s gaze flickered briefly around the room before returning to her. Slowly, deliberately, he released her wrist. But the absence of his touch didn’t make her feel safer. If anything, it made it worse. Because now He was still watching her. And she had no idea what he was thinking. “Get me another glass,” he said calmly, as if nothing had happened. Ava blinked, caught off guard. “What?” His expression didn’t change. “The wine,” he repeated. “You spilled it.” Right. Of course. This is normal. This is fine. Nothing about this felt normal. “Yes, sir,” she said quickly, backing away before he could stop her again. Her legs felt weak as she turned, walking no, forcing herself to walk back toward the service area. Don’t run. Don’t panic. Just get away. The moment she pushed through the doors into the staff corridor, the noise of the restaurant faded. And the silence hit her. Ava braced her hands against the wall, breathing hard. No. No, no, no. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She had been careful. For years. She had stayed invisible. Quiet. Forgettable. Ava Bennett. That was who she was now. Not Her thoughts cut off sharply. No. Don’t go there. Don’t think about it. But it didn’t matter. Because he had seen her. Nathaniel Hale. Out of everyone in the world It had to be him. Her chest tightened painfully. Does he remember everything? The question terrified her. Because if he did… Then this wasn’t just a coincidence. It wasn’t just a mistake. It was the beginning of something she had spent years trying to escape. A soft voice broke through her thoughts. “Ava? What happened out there?” She flinched, turning quickly to see one of the other waitresses watching her with concern. “Nothing,” Ava said too quickly. “Just a spill.” The girl frowned. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Ava forced a weak smile. It wasn’t a ghost. It was worse. Because ghosts stayed in the past. Nathaniel Hale didn’t. He had walked straight back into her life And looked at her like he already knew the truth. “Ava,” her manager called sharply from across the corridor. “Table twelve is waiting!” Her stomach twisted. Of course he was. Waiting. For her. Ava straightened slowly, wiping her damp palms against her uniform. She didn’t have a choice. She never did. Taking a steadying breath, she picked up a fresh bottle of wine. And walked back toward the door. Back to him. Back to the past. This time There would be no escape.
