Phase two of my plan begins as I make it into the women's restroom in the very creepy Cemetery. I look around in the very small room and notice that no one is present inside. I don't bother looking under the stalls since I don't want to be a perv and I also don't want to ruin this dress. I run into the middle stall of the bathroom and close it quietly and quickly lock the door as I put the seat down on and toilet. For extra health concerns, I rip off a couple pieces of toilet paper and place it down on the plastic lid as I sit down.
Making sure not to rip the envelope I pull it out from my bra and it is drenched with sweat and tears. The SM on the letter and smudged all of the white envelopes and now the black text has gone a weird Blue shade.
I pull at the piece of the envelope very quietly as I slowly begin to tare it open and make sure I don't rip whatever kind of thing is hidden inside of it.
The paper is yellowed and rotting away with a few stains of Mildew here and there. It looks like it's been sitting in a swamp where theres never been sunlight before. I unfold and pick it with my non-existent nails as I ever so carefully pinch the sides tightly not wanting it to drop on the toilet floor, because i will never read it if it's touched the filthy floor.
My eyes can barely focus at the writing because it's been so horribly written with random loops in letters that didn't need to be there and straight away I can notice by the way my name is spelled I can tell who wrote it.
/ Dear Bridget,
I regret to inform you that time is running out and I can well and truly be dead before you even get your hands on this letter. I know this a lot to process and you probably have a lot of questions. I knew that one day I would have to explain to you about my dark past and your father who has been absent from your life. Bring this letter straight to me without the envelope, Look around your surroundings before coming to me, someone could well and truly be watching you at any moment. Make sure to destroy any evidence of the envelope before it's in the wrong hands.
P.S mommy loves you very much
Love from Phoebe Lovey /
I sit on the toilet shocked as I reread the letter once again over in my head taking in every sentence.
"I regret to inform you that time is running out and I can well and truly be dead before you even get your hands on this letter" My heartbeats as that's the line that sticks out to me the most. I don't bother digesting the rest of the papers as I get up from the toilet and begin tearing apart the envelope into so many pieces.
I pull the lid of the toilet up and let the pieces of the envelope slowly fall from my hand and into the toilet water. Once all the papers are inside the toilet bowl I press the button atop the toilet and flush it down watching the water swallow the pieces into its mouth. I Double flush after the papers are gone to be extra cautious as it said to do destroy it the envelope.
Before I unlock the door I hear the water running from outside the door and I'm almost afraid to step out of the stall to see who I will be face to face with.
Trying not to make too much noise I gently and quietly hop atop onto the toilet seat a peak over the stall making sure to stay as low as possible knowing that there is a mirror facing my stall and whoever is on the other side will see me instantly.
Clair is crying over the sink splashing her red face with water as her tears ruin her makeup.
Part of me wants to comfort her like a good friend would do but the other part of me couldn't really care less at the moment so I stand there very still as she begins to speak to herself, which is a habit she does when she is in crisis and I get scared when her voice is low and breathy.
"Why me?" Clair says whispering into her hands but loud enough for me to just barely make out the words
Why her what? I think to myself as I hear the water running even faster as she washes her face again and I have the extreme urge to pee but just end up holding it a little longer just as she speaks again.
"I can't be a..." She begins to say as my right foot slips from the toilet lid and I fall onto the ground almost falling back and hitting my head on the brick wall.
"Who's there" She demands standing outside the door and I know from there I'm going to face have whatever truth she was talking about.
"Me, Bridget," I say standing up and half limping as I open the door of the stall.
"What are you... Did you hear anything I said" She says suddenly getting nervous
I lie but she sees straight through it "No the sink was on too loud"
"Right," She says rolling her eyes
Without her expecting it I put my arms out and pull her into a hug as she whimpers into my shoulders.
Minutes go by where we're just standing there and luckily no one has come in because that would be a site to see.
"I think I might be pregnant," She says whispering into my ear and I see my eyes open wide in the mirror as I pull away from her shocked by what I've heard.
"Huh," I say scared as if I heard her wrong.
"Yeah, I haven't had my period for a week," She says dabbing her eyes with a wet tissue.
"Did you take a pregnancy test!" I blurt out still not fully convinced the sudden news.
"Well not exactly but after your party, I just haven't been feeling well, like at first, I thought I was hung over but then the barfing just continued"
I stand there shocked still not trying to jump to any conclusions but also extremely frighten for her.
"Ok um don't jump to any conclusions yet until you've taken a test," I say trying to sound calm.
She shakes her head. "I'm too afraid to buy one alone" She pleads with puffy eyes.
If it was any other day I would be happy to drive Clair to the local drugstore and help her buy a pregnancy test but I can't. Too many things are important for me to particularly care. Not that I don't care about Clair barfing for the past three days or so but she could have just gotten sick from the party. There was a lot of people there.
"Look I have to get going with mom, but I promise tomorrow we can drive over to the drugstore and buy one," I say putting my hands on her shoulders
"Just try not to worry, it will be fine," I say kissing her on her forehead and making my way out of the bathroom.
The air is so refreshing as I step out of the bathroom and into the cemetery parking lot. Mom is standing outside the car talking to Jackson when she sees me and stops talking as I begin fast walking because I begin to hear thunder rumble in the sky.
I hold up the paper in front of her not even caring Jackson can see perfectly what it says. Quickly remembering the letter saying to "look around at your surrounding to make saw no one is looking" and I Hide it behind my back as mom flicks her hand at him to motion to go and without saying goodbye he walks to his pickup truck and drives away.
"What the f**k does this mean mom?" I say scared as all I can think about is how the letter said that "Time is running out and that mom could be dead already" Which she is clearly not.
"Look I can explain everything, but not here," She says opening the driver's side and hopping in
I stand there crossed arms contemplating if I even want to go anywhere afraid she could well I truly drop dead while driving.
"Come on Bridget it's going to rain" She saying stretching to the passenger side and opening the door.
My mind is telling me one hundred things. First she isn't denying the letter. Secondly, she's not mad at me for practically stealing the envelope from her safe and thirdly she looks so calm and collected it is so off-pointing.
Not wanting to leave mom alone in the car I hop in but face the window as she reverses out of the parking lot and drives the long twenty-something minutes home.
Not surprising as we arrive in the driveway rain the rain begins to pour down as I a struck over lightning makes its way down the sky.
"Let's get inside before it's too dangerous," She says pulling the keys out of the ignition and hopping out of the car.
Mom points her Prada handbag over her head to protect herself while I'm stuck with a bandaged arm and an already decaying piece of paper letter.
We both run to the porch and mom fishes through her bag to find the keys to unlock the front door.
My heart beats as the door flings open and I almost don't want to step inside because I can't turn back after this. I will finally learn about my father and my mothers passed and I don't know if I can take any of that.
"We will talk in my office," She says placing her bag down on the kitchen island as she switches the Kettle on.
"You will want green tea for this" She says trying to make a joke but I'm not in the mood as she Grabs my Morning Princess mug which I've had for years and places a mint green tea bag in there without sugar and I almost want to comment to on the lack of sugar not being placed in the mug but she stares at me while she pats her foot on the ground waiting for the water to finish boiling.
"Oh, right two sugars," She says looking as if she doesn't already how I like my tea but I just nod and she walks over to the pantry and grabs two small sachets of white sugar.
She pours the boiling water into the mug and mixes in the sugar around and pinches the tea bag as she blows on the tea and hands it to me like I'm a two year old.
I exchange her a look and take a sip of the flavorless tea and nob a little as if its good.
I start walking over to her office while she follows me in the shadows.
Her office is no surprise locked as usually and I stand back as she turns the door handle and pushes the nob in then twists it and it magically unlocks without any key needed.
"A lockable doorknob," She says smiling pushing the door open and I am greeted by her office, where all of this mess started.
Mom walks over to her desk and pulls the desk chair over to the bookshelf and begins to wobble on the chair as she balances herself and she swifts through the hundreds of books on the shelf and on the third row of books she and out a plain black hardcover book with weird writing on the side. She balances it down on the desk and climbs back onto the chair and grabs the Metal safe.
I walk over to her and grab onto the chair making sure it doesn't move too much because she has no free hands to hold onto if she suddenly loses her balance and falls.
She puts the safe on the ground and crosses her legs.
"Come sit," she says patting the awfully colored carpet and I place my mug on the desk and I sit in front of her.
We are both silent for a second while mom flips through the black book and smiles.
"So are you going to tell me about this suicide letter you wrote me," I say growing impatient
"Firstly it's not a suicide letter and secondly I'm looking for something," She says stopping in the middle of the book and ripping out a page of the book.
She places the sheet of paper atop of the safe and I can see the piece of paper which has a photo glued to it.
"That's me and your father," She says smiling as she points to the man with his hands around her.
My heart sinks. This is the first time I'm ever seeing my dad and he looks like nothing I could have ever imagined. From his dirty brown eyes to his messy hair to his full left arm filled head to toe with tattoos.
I examine him more noticing the tank top he is wearing and I carefully scan the tattoo that is written big letters across his chest
