Chapter Twenty

3024 Words
Hours drag on at a time where I am sitting tired up in my own filth. I called out multiple times that I need to use the restroom but all they tell is me to shut up. Every time I close my eyes I see my moms face and hear her voice telling me that everything will be ok but its almost hard to believe it when you have been in here for what feels like days. I've tried my hardest to listen in on multiple conversations that Cassandra and Richard have been having together but I can never quite make out the words they say. It's always something along the lines of "She had it coming" I try leaning back with my chair against the wall trying to make myself fall down so I can get their attention but the chair doesn't budge and when I look down I see that the chair has been bolted to the ground. "Just kill me already" I shout to no avail. I am weak and hungry and filthy and my last actual meal was with you mom. Although most nights I spent home alone cooking and baking home cooked meals for you and I we never got to enjoy it together. From your busy work schedule to my somewhat existing social life, our schedules also collided. I regret so much the things I never got to say to you but I guess you already knew what I was going to say. Mom, I wish one last time I could have said I loved you. I wish I could have hugged you and never let any part of you go. I wish we could go on countless vacations together and explore the world you said you always wanted to do. I wanted to travel to Australia with you and Switzerland and Paris with you but if I make it out alive today mom I promise you I will live out your dreams for you. I have so much hatred for my so-called father I wish that he will root in complete and utter hell with Cassandra right by his side. Steps stop at the top of the stairs of the basement door and when it opens I can smell freshly cooked beef and the aroma of green tea. "Oh my god, I am going crazy," I say under my breath as Cassandra walks down the stairs with a tray full of delicious smelling food. I know she is probably torturing me with this food as she makes each step down the stairs slowly. I feel saliva inch down my mouth and onto my ripped and dirty clothes. "Someone looks hungry," She says sitting on the bottom of the stairs and pulling out a plastic knife and fork from her left pocket. "I haven't had a meal like this in forever, These people fridges are stocked," She says slicing her fork into the bloody basically uncooked meat and she chews on it with a devious look on her face. "Where are we" I try to make myself sound intimidating but my voice comes out all crackly and gross. "Aw, Bridget you still haven't put to and to together of where you are?" She says looking at me up and down "How pathetic" She spits a bone from the steak on the ground. "Your father is upstairs getting the house nice and tidy for you to have a good sleep tonight in your bedroom," She says taking a sip of the boiling green tea. "What are you talking about," I say closing my eyes and trying to concentrate on my mom's voice inside my head. "You will be okay, everything will be fine Bridget," My mom says in my head "Help is on the way," She says and I see her kissing my forehead I snap back into reality and look straight into her eyes. "Two can play at that game," I say spitting at her and it lands on her boots. "Oh you've really done it now Lovey," She says getting up from the step "Oh Rocky! Your daughter is really trying to test me" She says kicking the half-eaten beef towards me and I kick it back at her and she turns around. "We better finish this hun, She is getting a little bit too fisty for grandma's liking," She says wiping her mouth with her gray hairy arms. "Whose grandma?" I say just ask Richard opens the basement door. "Good morning Lovey," He says walking downstairs and looks cleaner than before. "How are we today," He says jumping down the last two steps and almost falling on his ass. "That was a close one hun" Cassandra laughs under her breath and I almost want to let go and laugh but I have to focus. "So how did you sleep," He says pulling a fold out chair out of a closet across from me and sitting down on it. "Fine," I say managing to sound calm "Good," He says spitting out a piece of gum from his mouth "This is nice isn't it, Father and daughter bonding," He says and I nod "Oh, you know Cassandra right?" He says turning his hand to her and she waves at me "Meet your grandma," He says and they both laugh out loud "Hi grandma," I say sounding even calmer than before. They both look at me shocked as if I should be crying and shouting for help but I can feel it in my bones someone out there will find me and just like my mom said, I will be ok. "Welcome to Societies Misfits," He says waving his hand around the basement like a crazy man I nod "Thank you for having me," I say smiling and I can smell just how bad my breath really smells but I have to keep focused. "So..." Cassandra says looking at Richard as he stares back at me without speaking "Wow, you've got your moms everything," He says panning up and down at me and suddenly I feel like his eyes are undressing me. "Good legs too," He says licking his lips. I stop him from saying another word "Let's just get to the chase dad, what do you want from me," I say hating that I called that devil my dad but I have to play along with it to save my life. "Well from what I heard from my mother, your grandmother she told me that your mom finally told the story of societies misfits," He says in a deep voice and I try to remain calm as Cassandra inches closer to me smiling with now I am just noticing missing bottom front teeth, "She did," I say trying to smile but I can tell he knows I'm faking it and I suddenly feel even colder than before. "A little birdy told me that what your mother said was a lie, and remember Bridget there are always two sides to every story," He says getting up and stepping on his gum. "Got a cig ma? We're going to be here awhile" He says staring at Cassandra and she pulls out a cigarette and lights it for him. I start at him disgusted. He doesn't even know how to smoke probably not that I would know or anything but I do know is you're meant to blow the smoke out of your mouth but he just swallows it all. "Sit down ma, I know your back gets sore," He says sliding over the chair across the floor and Cassandra sits down heavily. "So where shall I start," He says looking up at the ceiling. "Can I start?" I ask puffing out my chest. They both start at me and Cassandra begins to open her mouth but Richard puts his finger to his lips to silence her. "I think it's best if I do the talking mommy," He says and shoes her away with his hand. "But Rocky she could be dangerous," She says pouting her lips at like she's scared of me. "I mean grandma you can stay if you want," I say smiling wider and wider with every word She sits and crosses her legs on the floor like an actual toddler and both Richard and me sit there in shock "Well tell her your side of your story hun," She says chewing her fingers Richard pulls his chair two steps closer to me and my smile begins to vanish when he says. "Don't give me this fake I'm not scared attitude Bridget because as much as I loved your mother I killed her and I can kill you too" He says barling his teeth "I don't know what you're talking about dad," I say shaking my head He flicks his head to Cassandra and she runs over to the closet and pulls out duck tape. I look up at her knowing that I've annoyed them much that they are going to tape my mouth shut. She walks around behind me and tapes my eyelids shut instead so now I can even open my eyes. "Are playing hide n seek" I joke but it is completely silent until BANG! I scream out loudly from hearing another gunshot go off. I try to open my eyes as wide as they can making the duck tape tear off the higher i raise my eyebrows and the tape suddenly gets pulled off. Richard is standing in front of me smiling. "Your grandmother can get quite annoying sometimes, I had to deal with her," He says wiping blood onto his jeans and he sits back down. "Did you kill her?" I look at him straight in the eyes and he smirks "Mommy? no, never I shot her in the leg because she was pissing me off" He says now sitting back on the fold-out chair. "Now shut up and listen to my side of the story." He says pulling out a gun from his pocket and I try not to sweat. "Imagine the Summer of 2000. A young good looky thirty-something single and ready to mingle guy. I remember the day exactly when I met your mom. It was at a club that she got into illegally" He says licking his lip "Excuse me?" I say recalling a different story mom told "I know, your mother is a great liar, huh, She didn't want you to think that she illegally got into a nightclub underage now did she?" He says clearing his throat and spitting the spit onto the ground and it almost lands near my bare feet. I begin to open my mouth but he puts his hand on the trigger of the gun. "Let me finish my side before we ask questions Lovey," He says pointing the gun right at my head. "You mother was without a doubt the hottest there but also the one with the least clothes on too," He says recalling the memory and I sit there unsure what to say. "Long story short we slept together that night and the next day we robbed a place together," He says laughing "You're a liar," I say under my breath but it comes out in my normal speaking voice "Oh Bridget I am not the liar here now am I," He says getting closer to me. "Now the only truth your mother did tell you was that she did, in fact, get addicted to robbing people and likewise like me after a month I officially asked her to join Societies Misfits a group that my family has been the leaders of for generations and well she said yes, but there was one slight problem" He says not blinking as he faces me "She caught feelings for me," He says laughing and running around the room like a madman with his gun pointing up to the ceiling. He stops and sits down again "Now I know you heard about the test to get into SM but what you didn't know about it was your mother planned it all, From the big elaborate robbery in LA to staying the week there it was all her," He says laughing and going bright red "I don't believe you," I say tears streaming down my face "Oh but you don't have to believe me, Bridget," He says pointing the gun yet again at me "But you shouldn't Believe Bridget either," He says staring blankly at me. "Huh?" I say refocusing on him "Oh, you didn't know?" He says covering his mouth and pretending to be shocked. "You weren't named after you grandma," He says laughing "You were named after your mom" I freeze and the whole room begins to spin again until I hear my moms voice inside my head. "Bridget some of it is true what he is saying but not all of it. He is trying to break you down and make you vulnerable to do things for him like he made me do, Don't break" I snap out of my mind and back to the room where now Richard is missing from the chair. "Haha" I hear behind me but when I turn my head Richard is standing there Clucking my neck. "The thing is I never wanted a daughter. There too much of a coward like there mother. I always wanted a son that takes orders and doesn't chicken out" He says clucking my throat tighter and tighter. "Your mother stole 1.2 million dollars from me and she thought she could get away with it? She thought hiding it in a safe inside a rich house halfway around the country wouldn't stop me from finding it." "Well little did she know I stole back what was rightfully mine and now you and your mother can join each other up in that hell hole," He says pulling the trigger the gun and, BANG! I open my eyes and see fog coming from a small ball on the floor and Jackson running across the room with a male that looks a lot like him and "Oh my god," I say coughing and hardly able to breathe as I see a man put Richard in cuffs while the female who looks awfully familiar pulls out Cassandra's lifeless body from the closet. "Jackson," I say as he unties me from the chair. "Its ok Bridget," He says calmly freeing my feet and arms and I hug him tightly never wanting to let him go. He lifts me up off of the chair and takes me outside where a police car is waiting outside with an ambulance parked by its side. "How did you find me" I cough hardly as he places me inside his pickup truck "Your necklace," He says holding the beautiful antique looking necklace in his hands. "I put a tracker in it before I gave it to you," He says placing it back around my neck. "Who's idea was that," I say not even shocked after the crazy week I've had. "It was mutual" He smirks "But why did it have the initials SM on it, did it mean Societies Misfits, was it meant to be a clue for me?" I say looking up at him "I don't know, when I bought it to put the tracker in your mother said I should get engraved SM into it but she never said the meaning as to why. I guess time will tell what it really means" He says smirking at me and I nod at him confusedly. "Anyways," He says and I smile widely at him as he goes around the other side of the truck to sit beside me. "Who were those people inside?" I say to him staring at his beautiful lips "My parents," He says smiling at me "They work for a witness protection agency. Your mother hired us knowing that this could possibly happen" I stop and stare at him "You knew my mother was going to die and you didn't stop it from happening," I say opening the door to his pick up truck but I am too sore to even get hop out fully. "Yes Bridget we all knew what could possibly happen but we, unfortunately, knew we couldn't stop them, Your mother hired us to keep you safe Bridget." He says running over and hugging me as I cry into his hands The figures from before emerging from the house with Richard in cuffs as he screams Loudly at me "You can't run forever Lovey, I will find you," He says spitting at nothing but the air outside. Cassandra is brought out on a stretcher and her the body has been covered by a thin blue sheet. "I'm sorry you had to go through all of this" Jackson says kissing me on the cheek. His parents walk to Jackson and his dad shakes my hand. "Nice to finally meet you, Bridget, I'm Felipe," He says shaking my sore hand firmly and I nod at him. "And Bridget you've met my gorgeous wife before Dr. Alice Adams," He says moving out of my view so I can see here standing there I turn to Jackson "Your mom is Dr. Alice Adams?" I say staring shockingly at the whole family and then I realize it "Wait if her last name is Adams than.," I say to them and they all nod Jackson speaks "Well technically yes but my middle name is Riley so I guess I wasn't fully lying to you," He says to me while hoping in his truck. "Now come on now we've got a long ride ahead," Jackson says sitting in the back of his old pickup truck while his dad hops in the driver's seat and his mom in the passenger seat. "Hop in," Jackson says with that gorgeous smile of his. I take one good look at this house and Crestwood and know that I will never return. "Where are we going," I say buckling myself in right next to Jackson and he places his arm over my shoulder and he turns to me, "Far, far, far away from here" .........
