Suddenly the machine lifted off, hovered for a few seconds just a few metres off the ground with its nose pointed downwards at a sharp angle. Then, as those on the ground turned their heads away from the swirling, stinging dust, it turned a complete one-hundred-and-eighty degrees, the roar of the turbine increased, and it rapidly gained altitude and sped away, rising higher and higher into the air, racing away to the east. As it moved further away, the officer waiting in the car park stepped forward to greet the new arrivals. “Senior Constable Greg King,” he introduced himself.
