10 Sam and Sarah scrambled up the rocky slope to where Francis indicated they would find a large water hole. The ground, covered with loose rocks varying in size from pebbles to fist size, was unstable and difficult to traverse without concentrating on exactly where they were stepping. When they reached the top of the incline, the ground levelled out, and although it was still carpeted with stones, which could easily slip from underfoot and cause a fall if caution was not taken, it was at least level and reasonably flat.
