Prologue
Does your brain ever do that thing, you know the one where you zone all the way out. Well, mine does, and it’s picked an interesting memory to collaborate on. As I recall the day that my life changed forever… “ The November air hung heavy around me. Leaves crunched under my feet as I drudged my way through the forest. Something about being amongst the trees with the sounds of pitter pattering coming from small curious paws, always seemed to calm me.   I’ve always found myself being drawn to the woods. The need to have the wind in my hair, the sun, or the moon on my face with my feet bare to wiggle my toes in whatever cushion the earth’s provided at that moment. Sand was my favorite to put my feet in. The way the soft, cool grain slipped and tickled through the cracks of my toes.  I find myself lost in my thoughts as I wander aimlessly. I’m unaware of how long I’ve been walking when I come across a clearing overlooking a cove. The moon was on the rise in the sky, fighting for dominance against the sun’s fading rays. I sighed while raising my face to the sky. The wind was picking up and making the hair on my arms raise. My skin was soon covered in goosebumps. I sat down with my knees tucked up to my chest, resting my chin on the tops of them. Thoughts are racing in my head. Instinctively I wrapped a strand of hair around my finger and began to twirl the silky piece. My heart started to flutter uncontrollably against my rib cage. It was as if every cell in my body had come ablaze. My bones started to splinter, crack, and rearrange themselves. A blood curdling scream half escaped my throat. Turning into a long drawn out howl. Long canines busted through my gums, bloody and unforgiving. My eyes glowed an amber yellow as pointy ears lifted straight up to take in the new noises surrounding me. Claws dug and scratched at the ground while I wrapped my head around what was happening to me. My legs stretched out in agony. I’ve never felt such pain before in my life. “Shh,” A whisper sounded inside my head. “It’ll all be over with shortly. I promise. Just take deep breaths and try to relax.” Her voice was beautiful. Like honey dripping in the summertime. I inhaled the fresh air. Taking a look around I examined with what seemed to be a fresh pair of eyes. My eyesight was sharper, clearer and more focused than ever. I sauntered forward, stopping as quickly as I moved. ` What the heck? ` I frowned. Lifting a foot to inspect it,  I noticed a warm honey colored paw was attached to my body. ` What Is Hap-ppening To Me?! ` I started to hyperventilate. My body trembled as my breathing became ragged. “Calm down.” ` That voice again. ` “Yes, me again. Everything will be okay. I promise.” ` What happened to me? And who are you? Also where are you? ` I rambled. ` I feel so confused. I have no idea what’s going on. Focus Maddy. Just breathe. Inhale 1.. 2.. 3.. Exhale 1.. 2.. 3.. ` Internally a war raged on. Emotions ran at a rapid pace through my body. My nerve endings felt shot. I surged forward. Running at a rapid speed, I felt the wind run through my fur. `Fur? ` I questioned. “Yes fur.” The voice chuckled. “ Maddy, I’ve been watching you for a long time. I know you’re scared, confused and anxious. But I need you to calm down. You’ve transitioned into a Werewolf.” ` A WHAT?! ` Oh great cue hyperventilating. ` I’m not a werewolf. I’m just an orphan. A nobody. This seriously can’t be happening right now. ` I should probably give you a little back story. My mother passed away when I was 5 and my father at 16. I don’t remember my mother much. Only from what I’ve been told mainly. My father and I on the other hand, we weren’t close, but we weren’t not close. He was my rock for 16 years. We just had very separate lives. “Yes Madeline you are a werewolf. I understand it’s a lot to take in, but take a look around you.” I took in my surroundings for the first time. I was still in the clearing only this time closer to the waters edge. Walking over I looked at my reflection in the aqua colored liquid. A wolfs snout looked back at me. Amber eyes glowed in the moonlight. Fur stuck up everywhere. I looked at my feet again. Good sized paws dug at the earth. I shook my head and howled at the moon. I couldn’t believe this was real. I’d heard of werewolves before but never really thought anything of it. ` So where are you? Why can’t I see you? ` “We are together as one. I am your wolf, Carmen. I live inside your head until it’s time to shift into your wolf form then I come forward. You’ve had me since you were a young girl. I’ve been dormant in the back of your mind waiting for your 18th birthday.” ` Holy Sh*t. ` …”
