Chapter 1 – The Night I Lost Everything
(Elara’s POV)
I always imagined this night would feel different.
Stronger. Brighter. Warmer.
Instead, it felt like I was standing at the edge of something I couldn’t see but somehow knew would swallow me whole.
The full moon hung high above us, glowing silver against the dark sky. Its light poured over the clearing, over the gathered pack members, over the ceremonial circle that I stood in… alone.
All eyes were on me.
I tried not to let it show, but my hands trembled slightly at my sides. I pressed my fingers together, forcing stillness, forcing calm.
This was my moment.
This was the night I would finally become Luna of the Moonfall Pack.
I lifted my chin, reminding myself to breathe.
You’ve prepared for this.
You’ve waited for this.
You are ready.
But even as I told myself those words, something felt… off.
A quiet unease settled in my chest.
It wasn’t the crowd because they had always watched me like this, with a mix of curiosity and doubt.
It wasn’t the ceremony, they had memorized every step, every word.
It was him.
Alpha Kael.
I turned my head slightly, my gaze searching for him.
He stood across from me, tall and unmoving, his expression carved from stone. The moonlight caught the sharp lines of his face, but his eyes… his eyes were unreadable.
Cold.
Distant.
Wrong.
My chest tightened.
Kael had always been reserved, but tonight… tonight there was something else.
Something I couldn’t name.
Something that made my heartbeat stutter.
“You may begin,” Elder Varik’s voice cut through the silence, smooth and commanding.
I forced myself to focus.
This was not the time to doubt.
I stepped forward, my voice soft but steady as I began the ceremonial words.
“I, Elara of Moonfall, stand before the pack to accept ”
“Stop.”
The word shattered everything.
It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t shouted.
But it carried enough weight to silence the entire clearing.
My breath caught.
Slowly, I turned back toward Kael.
He was looking at me now.
Really looking at me.
And for the first time since I had known him… I felt something break inside me.
There was no warmth in his gaze.
No connection.
No bond.
Just… distance.
“Kael?” My voice came out quieter than I meant it to.
He took a step forward.
Then another.
Each step echoed in my chest like a warning I didn’t understand.
The air shifted.
The bond between us, something invisible but always present ,tightened painfully.
And then“…i reject you, Elara.”
The words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
They hung in the air, heavy and impossible.
I blinked.
My mind refused to process them.
“I…” My lips parted, but nothing came out.
No.
No, I heard wrong.
I had to have heard wrong.
But then the bond snapped.
Not gently.
Not slowly.
It tore.
A sharp, unbearable pain ripped through my chest, stealing the air from my lungs. I staggered back, a cry escaping before I could stop it.
The world tilted.
The crowd gasped.
But all I could focus on was him.
Kael.
He didn’t move to catch me.
Didn’t reach for me.
Didn’t even look sorry.
“Why…?” I whispered, my voice breaking.
Silence answered me.
And then, “She has betrayed the pack.”
Elder Varik.
I turned toward him, confusion flooding through me.
“What…?” My thoughts stumbled. “No i didn’t”
“You leaked sensitive information to outsiders,” he continued smoothly, his voice carrying across the clearing. “Your actions have put us all at risk.”
“That’s not true!” The words tore out of me. “I would never”
“Enough.”
The command came sharp.
Final.
And suddenly… the way the others looked at me changed.
Doubt.
Suspicion.
Disgust.
My heart pounded.
“No… no, this is wrong,” I said, shaking my head. “I didn’t do anything Kael, tell them!”
I looked at him again, desperate.
But he said nothing.
Did nothing.
And that… hurt more than the rejection itself.
“Seize her.”
The order came like a death sentence.
My breath hitched as guards stepped forward.
“No wait please ” I took a step back.
No one listened.
Panic surged through me.
This wasn’t happening.
This couldn’t be happening.
I turned and ran….The forest swallowed me whole.
Branches tore at my clothes, roots threatened to trip me, but I didn’t stop.
I couldn’t stop.
Behind me, I heard them.
Chasing.
Hunting.
My chest burned, my legs screamed, but fear drove me forward.
You have to keep moving.
You can’t let them catch you.
I stumbled, nearly falling, but forced myself up again.
Tears blurred my vision.
Why is this happening?
What did I do?
A shout echoed behind me.
Closer now.
Too close.
My strength was fading.
I couldn’t keep this up.
Not for long.
And then I tripped…hard.
The ground rushed up to meet me, knocking the air from my lungs. Pain shot through my body as I tried to push myself up.
But it was too late.
They were already there.
Surrounding me.
Blocking every path.
I froze.
This was it.
My chest rose and fell rapidly as I looked around, searching for escape but there was none.
“Don’t run,” one of them said.
My hands trembled against the ground.
I didn’t want to die.
Not like this.
Not without knowing why.
Please…
Something inside me answered.
A sudden heat spread through my chest, sharp and unfamiliar. My breath hitched as the feeling grew, stronger, brighter, overwhelming.
“What?”
The energy exploded out of me.
A force burst from my body, throwing the guards back as if they weighed nothing. The air itself seemed to ripple, shaking the ground beneath us.
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Unnatural.
I stared at my hands, my heart pounding wildly.
What… was that?
The guards groaned, struggling to get up.
Fear gripped me.
Not of them.
But of myself.
I didn’t wait.
I ran again.
Deeper into the darkness.
Away from everything I knew.
Away from the life I had lost.
And for the first time… I realized something that made my blood run cold.
I wasn’t just running from them anymore.
I was running from whatever I was becoming.
