I admired the tiny jewellery box Bertha had given me before we left Frank Bay. Cameron's newly found "superpowers" hadn't helped us at all. Shia felt super weird about the fact that the killer knew dark magic. I didn't even know what kind of magic classified as "dark". "What's dark magic?" I asked, putting the tiny box aside for now. "Dark magic is a very dangerous form of magic. Highly powerful. When it falls in the hands of humans, it can manipulate their soul into doing wrong things and harm others," Shia explained. "If this ring has the essence of dark magic then it means the owner either has it or was in the presence of it." "Maybe whoever it is, was in the presence of it," Cameron stated thoughtfully. "That still makes them relevant though. Whoever it is might have seen your Grammy getting killed that night. We should look for him," I said. Shia nodded. "I'll look for a person with the surname Doe who has some connection to the Civil Alliance party." She pulled out her phone and logged onto a web browser. I slumped back in my seat, wondering what it would be like to be a mythical creature. A someone with magical powers. I could get whatever I wanted with a twist of my finger or a wave of my palm. I could stop crime by punishing the bad guys all on my own. A shiver ran down my spine as I remembered the night those three guys targeted me. I needed to learn either self defence or at least have some sort of an ability to prevent something like that happening ever again. Maybe Shia's treehouse of magic spells and potions might have something useful for me. "I couldn't find anyone," Shia announced. "There is no one with the surname or forename Doe who is a member of the group." "Maybe there's a link we're missing, Shia," Cameron spoke up. "Maybe that man or woman isn't actually a part of the group yet is related to it somehow." "Why don't you try searching for the member's relatives? Or party sponsors?" I suggested. She nodded, "I'll do that once we get home. I'm so tired right now." It took us some time but eventually, Cameron pulled back into Shia's driveway. I unbuckled and jumped out. Night had already fallen and the sun was just at the corner, about to disappear. I grabbed Shia by the arm. "Hey. I was wondering if uh-" I hesitated. "You want to try magic, don't you?" She sighed. It was like she was talking to a kid! "Uh, yeah," I smiled sheepishly. "But only for like an hour. I promise I'll just play with the sparkles in your backyard and maybe conjure up a dress or two for myself..." "Why don't you let the kid stay out with your wand and play while we grown ups go in and discuss the beginning of our investigation plan?" Cameron smirked. I narrowed my eyes at him. The guy doesn't fail to annoy me every chance he gets. "Right. Come on," she grabbed my hand and flew me to her tree house without warning. "Yikes! You could've given me a heads up!" I shouted when she placed me back on the ground. She shrugged and opened the door. "Felt like flying a bit." We stepped inside, "You didn't really have to come with me you know. I could've gotten it on my own." "I didn't tell you? This wand won't work for you unless I hand it to you on my own will," she lifted it up from a box. "You don't keep it on you?" I asked. It was just like something you'd see in the movies. A bit thick, rod like and made of wood. She swung it in her hand, making swirls of yellow sparkle. "Here," she held it out. "You know, once you use it, it'll have the sparkle of your favourite colour." "Really?" I exclaimed excitedly. I took it from her and began to swirl it around. Sure enough, it began responding to me. "But remember, if you give it to someone else, it won't respond to them. It's my wand and it requires only my permission to be accessed," she informed me. "Okay okay. But how do I use it instead of just creating these sparkles?" I asked urgently. I felt like a 6 year old child, who wanted her ice cream cold and wanted it now. "Just imagine what you want done and it'll do it for you," she shrugged, kneeling over and pulling a book out. I guess it was a book about dark magic or something. I imagined myself in Shia's fairy form and quickly swirled the wand around me. I felt slightly cold as the swirls of magic surrounded me before they covered my eyes completely. Once they cleared, I saw Shia looking at me skeptically. "That's it? You wanted to look like me?" "Well yeah," I shrugged and admired myself in the tall mirror. "Don't I look pretty?" "I thought you'd conjure up money or new dresses," she mumbled. "Hey! Why'd you assume I'm all about the money?" I replied, feeling offended. "You're not wrong about the dress though." She laughed and shook her head. "You can come back in when you're done playing." "Wait! Do these wings work?" I asked pointing at the pair of pretty butterfly wings that hung from my back. "Ooh, they're not heavy though. I always thought they'd be kinda heavy." "Yeah, they'll work." She answered, losing interest as she scanned through the book she was holding. "How do I use them?" I asked. "Just try to fly and you'll fly. Just like when you walk, your feet move on their own. It's the same with wings," I opened my mouth. "And I'm off now." She quickly opened the door and flew out. I just yelled a 'thankyou' to the air in her place and looked at the wand in my hand. "Is this even real? Am I dreaming? Do I have to pinch myself?" I giggled excitedly. I looked around to see if there was anything else that would help me have some more fun. Straightening my blonde hair, which looked gorgeous on me by the way, I spotted a purple bag lying on the floor. "Ooh, what's this?" I picked it up. It didn't have any labels in it but there was a powdery substance in there. "Hmm, I wonder what does this do?" I suddenly remembered how most wizards in the movies just pull these tiny spell bags out of nowhere and throw spells around. I've always wondered where do they even tuck these things in. I placed it on my palm and pointed the wand at it. Closing my eyes , I imagined it disappearing into a tiny, non-existent pocket in the skirt of my new pixie dress. When I opened them, the tiny pouch was gone! I laughed feeling successful, then proceeded to the door of the tree house. Time to test my new pair of wings! I stood on the edge and gulped looking at the distance between the door and the ground. A good 9 feet. Whoever told her to build a treehouse this high?! I looked up and tried to put into action what Shia had told me. It's like walking. I spotted a spot in the backyard and thought about how I wanted to fly there. Sure enough, the wings started to flutter before they lifted my feet off the wooden boards. "Ahh!" I yelled as my body shook and trembled. "Please don't drop me. Please don't drop MEE!" I screamed as the wings carried me forward. I smiled as the wind blew against my face and hair. What I didn't expect was to forget that I was supposed te be focusing so the wings stopped fluttering and I went down to the ground, landing on my butt. "Oof!" Good thing I'd flown down a good 5 feet or that fall would've broken some serious bones. I laid there, my eyebrows drawn into a frown. A while later, the wings started to pinch me in the back. "Ouch!" I pulled myself up into a sitting position, even more annoyed now. "Stupid wings! How do pixies even go to sleep with these things?" I was still bummed about how I dropped to the ground on my first flight that I didn't notice the huge lightshow right behind me. A few sparkles flew around to my face. Blue sparkles. They made me feel so good. A weird type of feeling really. My eyes widened. Did I break something? I turned around but the glow hadn't subsided yet. It was a huge ball of light and a figure was emerging from it. I covered my eyes because of the intensity and the fact that I'd been blantantly staring at it. Is that the Angel of Death? Have I died?! How could have I died from a 4 feet fall? I frowned. The glowing stopped as the figure stepped completely out of it. It took me a while to see it but finally my eyes cleared so I could look. Infront of me stood the most gorgeous creature I'd ever seen! He had greyish, silver eyes and they held a hint of such a beautiful blue sparkle. His hair fell slightly over his eyes and it was deliciously chocolate coloured. His jawline was so sharp, it made my stomach feel giddy. In fact, my heart had begun pounding in my chest and I was no longer sure if it was because of his presence or his appearance. His nose, chin infact his entire face was the epitome of perfection! My eyes sinfully travelled to his extremely muscular body. His chest muscles were extremely strong while his biceps rippled against the arms of the weird thing he was wearing. I frowned. What's that?! It was some sort of an old 'Robin Hood' or 'Peter Pan' type outfit. Muddy brown and green. I quickly scrambled to my feet as the newly emerged being stared at me. His eyes racked over my body and I suddenly felt conscious. "Hey! What are you? And why are you staring at me like that?" I asked indignantly. "Shia? Is this you?" He spoke up and I think I melted even more. His voice! It was so thick and sexy. His accent though was a kind I couldn't exactly identify. "Huh?" I mumbled when he said something I couldn't understand. "Come on, we must get going," he quickly grabbed my hand. His touch felt warm. "Wait! What do you mean!? Who are you!?" I shrieked. "I really don't have time for this!" He was growing impatient. "I'm King Derek, the forty thousandth king of Pixie Island." "Forty thousandth?! You guys had that many?" I exclaimed, kind of amused. He looked at me incredulously, "I was still the King when I banished you." I looked at him warily. So he's the one who banished Shia without proper investigation? Well, he was in for an earfull. "Look here, mister you-" "We can talk once we get back!" He yelled, pointing his wand infront of us and opening a huge, bright hole. My eyes widened as I realized what he was about to do. He was going to take me to Pixie Island because he thinks I'm Shia! "You've got the wrong person! I'm not Shia!" I yelled but he couldn't hear me over the noise that huge, glowing ball was making. How come no one can hear this glowing ball?! "I'll tell you everything once we go there but for now you must stop resisting!" The King yelled again. No matter how much I protested, it was no use. Shia needed to hunt for her grandmother's killer in the human world and if she got taken away by the King like this, she would never be able to. Maybe I could hold him and the people there for a few days? Weeks? Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Shia and Cameron run out into the yard. I looked at them for a second and shook my head before I felt myself fall into that ball of bright light.
