"Do you really think you can find this guy?" Cameron said from the couch. He had his legs propped on the coffee table and was leisurely stuffing cheese and nachos in his mouth, a bowl of which he'd conjured up 15 minutes ago.
I tried not to let his legs bother me.
I was sitting with the laptop open infront of me, searching for members of the Civil Alliance. So far, I had zero luck in finding what I needed. I checked every member of the group and nobody had the name Doe. Not even a surname.
"What if this is like those things where humans name bodies and people with no identity as John and Jane Doe?" I mutter thoughtfully.
"I find that stupid honestly." Cameron answered, with a mouth full of chips.
I cringed as a bit fell right beneath my eye. I gently wiped it off and turned to listen to his albeit useless, but sensible theories.
"I think you should look for the sponsors. You know, what figure is supporting them the most right now," he said.
I nodded and began typing it in. I must say though, these humans really were remarkable beings. And the internet was an example. I mean, we pixies were far ahead of them but that was just because of our magic. These beings did it all by themselves, made these huge buildings by themselves, discovered universes by themselves and invented phenomena like the internet and computers. All without magic.
That was pretty cool.
Before I could see the results though I sensed something.
Magic.
I looked at Cameron in alarm, who seemed to have noticed it too. He was sitting on the couch all upright and alarmed now. After looking around the living room for about 2 seconds, he frowned.
"This isn't dark magic. Maybe it's Narissa outside playing with your wand."
"No. This isn't my magic. This is.." I paused, trying to sense just what this actually was.
The scent and power had familiarity. A whole lot of familiarity. It was as if I'd faced it before. Or the strength at least. I closed my eyes, forcing myself to recognize it in any way possible. That's when my eyes popped open in alarmed realization.
"The Pixie King!" I yelled and ran towards the door.
"Are you sure?" Cameron shouted behind me.
I yanked the door open and stepped outside. Blue sparkles were flying out everywhere and a huge, blinding light.
A portal!
Nessi stood behind a shadowy figure, I presumed the King, letting him lead her to the bright portal. I attempted to run and help her but when she spotted me, she simply shook her head. I didn't want to stop. If he found out she's human, who knows what he'd do to her?
I attempted to run to her again but Cameron caught my wrist. I turned to look at him in shock and panic. What was he doing?!
"What are you," the portal closed behind me, "DOING?!"
I turned to look at the silent yard again. The remaining few sparkled flew about here and there. It was so silent. And dark.
I collapsed on my knees, unable to comprehend what was about to happen. He just took Nessi back with him. Maybe he mistook her for me because she had the wand and everything.
"No no no no no," I yanked my hair. "We have to get her back. If he finds out she's human he'll kill her for sure!"
"They do that?" Cameron's voice came from behind me. "I mean, don't they just alter the memory and send the human back on its way?"
"That's when they accidentally wander over to the island. Nessi went there on purpose and is also deceiving the King by pretending to be me!" I replied.
"How do you know that?"
"She was dressed up exactly like me! The King mistook her for me and took her back instead. Why else do you think he would take her?" I was getting more annoyed now than worried. He was asking way too many questions.
"Okay, last question," he said, sensing my irritation. "What about the entire aura thing? I mean, it isn't possible for Narissa to exude Pixie Aura. Then how come the King didn't find out?"
I frowned. That's what was confusing me. How could the King not feel that she wasn't human? He could've picked up on her aura and realize almost immediately that she wasn't a Pixie but a human with a wand. But the wand was going to keep working for her until or unless I commanded it to stop.
"Can't you open up a portal or something?" I asked Cameron, beginning to feel how useless he actually was becoming.
"I can," he said, looking at the place where the King had opened his portal. "But I don't think doing that is a good idea right now. I'll only have one chance of opening a portal and I don't think we should take it. Just yet."
I frowned. "What the hell are you going on about?"
"What I mean is," he crouches to my level, "I think Narissa did that for a reason. She could've easily gotten away but she didn't. I think she did it to give you time to find your grandmother's murderer."
I looked at him, uncertain and very hesitant to believe what he just said. Would Nessi really have let the King take her back because of that? Because of me? Because of Grammy?
"But what if she gets found out?" I asked.
"I'll try to get in contact with somebody over there. But for now, let's focus on finding the murderer quickly so we can-"
A phone ringing interrupted us.
"Answer your phone," I told him, standing up.
"Not my phone," he said, looking behind me.
I followed his gaze and spotted a phone lying on the ground. Nessi's phone. I grabbed it off the ground and sure enough, it was her Dad calling.
"What now? Last time when she didn't answer, he called over detective Dylan," I whispered in panic.
"One second," Cameron said. He used two of his fingers and sent some sort of white coloured sparkle over to my mouth. "Now, talk to him as Nessi and tell him you won't be home for like a month. School stuff."
I looked at him incredulously, "What school stuf-?" My eyes widened as Nessi's voice floated out my lips.
"Well we must cover up somehow. We can't exactly tell him that Narissa was taken by the Pixie King to Pixie Island," he rolled his eyes.
"What if he calls the Principal?" I panic-whispered.
"Leave that to me," he smirked.
I received the call and did as he had told me to. Her father did ask a bit of a questions but after that he just let go and I quickly hung up. Guess he's used to his daughter's subtle replies. A minute later, Cameron's phone rang. I narrowed my eyes as he received the phone and spoke with ease.
As Principal Maxwell.
After he was done, he smiled at me. "Not so useless now am I?"
I smiled at him tightly, "Yes yes. Great job."
He simply flexed his shoulders before heading inside. I followed him but before I could pull open the screen door a sudden noised stopped me. Tires screeching.
Great. I just can't find out who this Doe guy is without being interrupted.
I turned around only to see Detective Jerk, I'd named him that permanently, step out of his jeep looking really mad. What now?
He slammed the car door shut and walked over to me in three long strides. I had to step back a little as the intensity of his stare was overwhelming. He walked until my back was completely pressed against the screen door. His face was so close to mine and I could even hear the steady beat of his heart.
And of course, the raced one of my own.
"What?" I asked, suddenly feeling all weird.
He looked at me, angling his eyes every possible way he could. He looked my face up and then down. I stiffled a laugh.
He really looked like a guard dog, sniffing something it found on the street. He looked around before meeting my eyes again and realizing how close he was to me. He quickly moved away but kept glaring at me.
"What is it?" I nearly groaned but caught myself.
The one thing I'd observed about humans was that they liked to a***e they're authority. If they held some sort of law enforcing power, they'd make sure people respected them or they'd go ahead, flaunting all they had and all they did. People with authority usually developed some sort of superiority complex because they consider those who are supposed to abide the law as people below them. And then they go ahead abusing the likes of others.
"I know what I saw. I'm not going to think I'm going crazy. There was dead body in there and you three somehow made it disappear. Okay, I can accept that," his voice had become slightly squeaky. "But you can't keep it hidden forever. One day or another, it'll come out."
I almost mentally slapped my forehead. This dude had some serious issues. "I've no idea what you're talking about."
He pulled me away from the door and stepped inside the house.
"Hey!" I yelled, running after him.
He frantically ran inside, pushing away doors and Grammy's wall-hangings. I tried not to let his haphazard state bother me but the man was a detective and he thought he was going crazy. So, I owed a bit of sympathy to him. I followed him into the living room where Cameron had been lazying on the couch lying over his stomach.
Shirtless!
Detective Jerk isn't too happy to see this, "Hey you! Get up and tell me where you hid the old lady's dead body."
Cameron groans and rolls over, stretching his perfectly muscled arms over his head and yawning, "Why is this dude back here?"
"I don't know," I plopped down on the leather couch and shut my laptop.
"You two will be in deep trouble for murder and then covering it up!" Detective Jerk's voice raised.
I balled my fists, in an attempt to not lash out at him. Why did he keep accusing me of killing my own Grammy?!
"We didn't kill anybody Detective," Cameron mumbled, half asleep. I rolled my eyes.
"I saw the woman lying right there!" He yelled, pointing to the place where Grammy had been lying. He suddenly noticed Grammy's picture over the fireplace and quickly walked over to it.
"That's her! The woman!"
I quickly stood up, throwing an annoyed glare in Cameron's direction, and walked over to him.
"That's my Grammy, Tricia. But she uh- died not too long ago-"
I couldn't finish the rest of my sentence because of a huge crash in the hallway. Detective Jerk quickly pulled out his g*n.
"What was that?"
Cameron rolled off the couch and the three of us cautiously approached the doorway. Before we could go to whatever was out there, it itself appeared in the doorway. A large, about 7 feet tall, creature with greyish scaled skin. Its head was comparitively shorter than its body and he had a dinosaur like nose, claws, two bat like wings and a thick tail.
A gargoyle!
"What the hell is that?!" Detective Jerk yelled, shooting at it with his g*n.
This made the gargoyle even angrier and it smashed my table of antique vases.
"Wha-? Hey! Those were originals you know!" I shouted.
Detective Jerk looked at me like I'd lost my mind. Because I actually cared about the vases getting smashed and was not surprised at the thing's presence inside my house. "Are you serious?!"
I quickly caught myself in time and went, "Oh my God! What is that? Why is that inside my house?"
Cameron stood somewhere to the side, his eyes closed and doing weird stuff with his hands.
The Detective quickly scrambled and pulled out his phone. Before he could dial though, the gargoyle roared and swooped the phone out of his grasp. It shoved him backward but before he could hit the wall, I caught him from behind.
The poor guy looked like he was ready to faint as he looked at me. I was beginning to question its existence inside my house. What on earth was it doing here and how on earth did he even know this wasn't a human's home?
I helped Detective Jerk sit on the ground and stepped in front of him. The gargoyle looked at me with its ruby red eyes and they grew even darker. A puff of smoke came out of its huge nostrils.
So it really was here for me.
