Chapter 5

815 Words

Cathy and I flew out that same day to a city in the Southwest. That night, Cathy slept pressed tightly against my side. Luckily, neither of us had ever been the type who couldn't sleep in an unfamiliar bed. There were more than a dozen missed calls on my phone. I checked the last message. Ethan: Stella, don't use Cathy to punish me. I deleted it and set my phone back on the nightstand. If I were doing this out of anger, I would've stayed and fought with him. But I really didn't want to fight anymore. Back home, Ethan turned on every light in the house. None of them could illuminate Cathy or me. Cathy's backpack, our IDs, our clothes, and the transfer documents from my study were all gone. I'd taken everything with me. The only thing waiting for Ethan was a set of divorce papers.
